I was about to mention that before I saw this. Though, I do hope the tweet from the Union criticizing O’Brien’s support for Hawley being deleted isn’t a sign that O’Brien is just going to shut down dissent and push things in the wrong direction out of spite/malice.

Seriously Beau, I think you need to watch that bit again. He didn't use the words "I endorse Donald Trump" in the same way that Trump didn't use the words "you will get the aid promised to Ukraine only if you do me this favor." He praised him, including lying directly about Trump's willingness to take criticism, and effectively endorsed his character. Given that for so many people, character, and not policy or principal, is the primary factor in their choosing a presidential candidate, that rings more like an endorsement than any endorsement I've seen Trump has given to someone else, IMHO.
@iamgoingtorunoutofro
@iamgoingtorunoutofro Ай бұрын
Yeah I mean knowing the (trade union) folks I work with, a non-endorsement followed by a “hey I love this fascist” post is going to be taken more as an implicit endorsement of trump than as criticism of republicans. Way too many of my coworkers already believe republicans will help them and just want leadership to sign off on them voting R, so overall I’m more bummed out than enthused by SOB’s recent shenanigans
@jointhethoughtt
@jointhethoughtt Ай бұрын
Member of the union here, I can say this was pretty divisive among my circles. Our VP called it an embarrassment, you claim this is good for messaging purposes and I'm half in agreement. But saying he didn't endorse trump is a bit silly, he certainly did. To most fellow rank and file I've talked to, this just seems like a mouse coming to a cat convention to try and convince them to be pro-mouse... it just won't ever happen. Ultimately I believe it's desperate pandering to the suspected winning party, but it's not going to make a difference to republican policy toward unions. Not sure the messaging aspect here was as worth the infighting and overall division this caused among us, or to what extent if any the messaging actually influences the target audience. Giving this Beau take a 6/10, needs improvement. The last sentence of the video was the most important takeaway.

Not at all. So let's separately consider Maghats and everyone else at the convention/watching. Maghats are psyched because they probably thought O'Brien was going to endorse Trump. In their minds, that's the whole point of the convention. Maybe some think he actually did endorse their guy. The others, there aren't a ton in that audience, but they're watching. They're more likely to hear the content of the speech. That's why O'Brien is there, to state a pro-union message. And maybe it'll help.

I'm not actually bothered by him attending, especially since he didn't give an endorsement. I'm more worried about some of the social media crap where he's personally liking anti-diversity bull from Hawley. You don't win over people by crapping on the people who already support you. This has been a problem for a lot of unions in the past and it looks like it still is.

Same deal with my union (Carpenters) and the others on your average job site (Electricians, Plumbers, Madons, Laborers, Operators, etc.). Between work and family the effort to put into actually paying attention to things is stretched so thin that listening to (and believing) Joe Rogan is all most folks can spare. Being a policy nerd takes effort, and counteracting the damage right-wing media dies to folks around you is a losing battle at the best of times; and the jobsite with 30 other things going on at the same time is *_NOT_* the best of times... They want to fight fight fight but unfortunately they want to fight the wrong group..the billionaire crowd or the Dems who sometimes really want to help citizens.

Let me tell you about Sean O'Brien the union raider. I was a Teamster for almost 20 years. I would still be, except that last year under O'Brien, my conference, the GCC-IBT (mostly printing trades) was pushed out. Dunno all the details, it was a big surprise to many of us, maybe faults on both sides. We formed the PPPWU, the Printing, Packaging, and Production Workers Union of North America. (I betcha haven't heard of it -- yet.) Now the Teamsters are RAIDING our locals. That means trying to get them to decertify our union and become obedient Teamster locals. It's a shameful kind of non-solidarity, and a low way to increase membership.

Here to add, not to detract what you say, which I think is correct. The issue is O’Brien is a big Josh Hawley guy who endorsed his article saying that companies were struggling to pay workers because of “DEI and the Trans Religion”. Which is only anti union if you consider non white, non cis people workers. I’m glad that he’s trying to make inroads to republicans and hedging his bets, but I also think he’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Not all union bosses are good people with anything other than power as a goal, just like any other elected official. Frankly I don’t trust the guy and if he thinks trans people being hired is a bigger problem than corporate buybacks than he can resign
