You guys are really awesome. 1976, I purchased a ford Econoline put some tires install a bed and left San Fransisco and drove to Santiago Chile, it took me 3 month to get there, in Colombia I got broken in and they took all my camera gear, then in Ecuador they stole two tires and to get rims to match it was a nightmare but I made it and still today I remember what a great adventure it was. but now I can't imagine doing that trip again due to all the politic conflicts and getting visas etc. You are my true heroes, enjoy your dream. Love you guys.

First gen tundra camper builds are my favorite toyota truck camper builds. Id rock one if wasnt in love with my first gen 4runner. Seriously look into the om16 swaps into it. You can get a motor with 400hp plus and close to 30mpg. They are bullet proof like 2jz and rev like mad too. Good luck on your build and dont forgot to make use of that space inside the bed sides!

First admission on my part is that I never watch this sort of video and if it wasn't you guys, I wouldn't have watched this one. Wow, for those that listen, this brief video is packed full of lessons, not only on obtaining dream, but just life in general. You guys could seriously teach Master's level classes in life. Stacy, you views on sacrifice, dedication and achievement are inspiring as well as instructional. Matthew, you are a man that was set to blow, you just needed the spark that you found in Stacy. You really do seem to make a great team.

Hey Mathew and Stacy, I agree with everything you said. I’m in my mid 60’s now and have lived my life for travel. In 1979 I went to Australia for the first time. I came home and went to Uni for a business degree. When I started work in a professional capacity that gave me the income to take 6 weeks off for another trip to Australia. As I only had 3 weeks of annual leave I had to sacrifice by working two years to earn the time off. I then did the same procedure again in order to go backpacking to Kenya and Tanzania for 6 weeks. Those trips whetted my appetite for more so in 1988 I quit my job and backpacked around the world for a year starting with a 4 month Trans-Africa trip from England to Kenya. I paid for the year of travelling by selling the only thing I owned, my Toyota truck. When I came home I fell into a consulting role and turned that self employment opportunity into a wonderful lifestyle of maintaining my professional career while still taking annual backpacking trips of 3 to 4 months at a time. Sacrifices were made along the way, I didn’t purchase a house, didn’t spend my money on cars, avoided relationships and saved as much as I could for my next trip. It was great. Then one day I was offered a permanent position that I felt I shouldn’t say no to. It gave me a good income and 6 weeks of annual leave so I could still travel. Best of both worlds in my mind, how could I ask for anything more. Well then I met the love of my life, we had so much in common, especially the love of travel. Our form of travel changed as we started a family right away and now only took 3 week vacations but I’m proud to say that from the time our son was just 1 year old we continued to travel the world with him. Sometimes we pulled him out of school but the education he received by seeing other countries and experiencing new cultures was far greater than he ever would get sitting in a classroom. By the time our son turned 20 he had been to 22 countries and is right now planning his first solo trip for later this summer. Sometimes there are bumps in the road and it takes a lot to keep the dream alive. In my case it was a cancer diagnosis. It took more than two years to recover and I still have on going issue but we continued to take an annual trip overseas. My wife and I are retired now and do multiple trips per year. It does take a lot of sacrifices and a self awareness of what one truly values in life but as you said, when you climb those mountains, the view is fantastic. Travel on!

I like your honesty, I think people misunderstand the prep time and hard work before as its a sacrifice what ever you do. Be that a steady job in BC or being on the road neither is a free ride. Its interesting seeing how some people view the overlanding/vanlife thing as being natural and for everybody. You can see how this effected some people in both ends of the spectrum with being asked to stay indoors or wear something with Covid turbo charged some people and others who wore tinfoil hats, I am originally from NZ so we have a good supply of "alternative lifestyle" people wanting to get away from it all. Being two people in 48sq/ft can give people cabin fever and it is now a very competitive arena to make a living off it in 2024. I have seen alot of people lean into the "This will be great for KZfaq" where it dilutes their enjoyment of travel, but also destroy their relationship. The idea that you can't go back or pause the trip is also a spectre that can haunt people too. Having had that foundation of confidence built before I left, not just the travelling itself was the key. Spending a year in Cuba and living away from the tourists meant I now understand why people love religion in what ever form it takes as you gain happiness from making others happy, the Columbian lady where you camped on a School basketball court making you coffee was your high five with humanity. Maybe you should go back and have dinner, the offer was there? On a positive note I think its good to see a fresh approach to this, you are using a drone, starlink, and a tablet instead of a Lonely Planet and Che Guevara's motorcycle diaries as I did in the '90s. I like the idea of throwing the drone up not just to see where you have been, but also to see if the road goes somewhere over the hill. I lost all my photos, equipment, everything and that's ok with me as I realised it was my journey. Its nice you have this in the cloud not just on a wall or in a laptop in the living room.

interesting story! you two seem to have a very similar dynamic to my wife and I. She's the government worker (the stable income) and I'm the full time youtuber. I knew I had to go hard and not give up, that's the key to youtube, consistency and never giving up. it's an absolute shit ton of work, like A SHIT TON, people have no clue. you guys obviously understand. If you ever have any questions moving forward about sponsor deals, full time youtube income, etc ( I don't think you need help) give me a shout. and if you wanna hang out and go wheeling one day with the wife and I, lemme know!

Thank you so much! We knew of each other from our small town in Nanaimo through different high schools. It wasn’t until I sold my Tacoma and was on the hunt for a first gen 4Runner that we connected. Matthew was selling his, and I went to test drive it (I didn’t end up buying his) but he sent me the link a couple weeks later to Jade. I bought her, and she ended up being the biggest lemon of the Toyota world. Naturally, I needed a mechanic, and Matthew fit the job, and that planted the seed. Now, jade is a symbol of the beginning of us!

I did achieve my dream too, a few of them at this stage in my life (59 yrs) and now, I'm embarking on a dream very much like yours, and I hope you follow me as well. My plan is almost just like yours, except I'm building a truck mounted camper which I'll manufacture on a small scale, and drag a box trailer full of toys including my modular boat which I've been manufacturing for the past 14 years called Expandacraft. I'll also be keeping to paved roads in the USA and Canada. RV campsites will be a contributor to my travels as well a bicycle brand and an outdoor outfitter. Product placement will be a good part of my sponsorships. That brings me to a request, I'd love to chat with you two about your sponsorships and see what this lifelong entrepreneur can learn from the new guard. I'm sure I have a few things I could share with you which I've learned over the years doing what I love to do for a living. Stacie, you spoke to me when you were talking about reaching a time where you just had to go all in. Well, that was me when I was your age, and it still is. Wesley

Amazing rig for 1/3 the price of a trust-fund wagon. Well done, the fact that you are doing it at this age is incredible.

Do you guys have any tips or things one would need to know before trying to mate a old Toyota camper onto an 80 series chassis?

I'm assuming you watching the build series? Other than that... Less wood, more aluminum! And make the top lift higher.

Great video - I think as much as being transparent to your followers, I am betting you shut off the camera and said "you know something , we did sacrifice a lot to be here - and we're here!" Ps - Dad says he will handle the Craft Beer Easter Hunt this year - not to worry! Much love 💙

Yes. Our bills are low being on the road, but KZfaq has helped us stay afloat.

I am guessing no children. How do you family feel about travelling through dangerous countries. By the way you are a mechanic genius.

No kids yet! And the families are very supportive. They know we’re smart and use our intuition well.

You guys are so awesome and inspiring! Thanks for so much great Yota content giving me dreams of how to build my 85 out. Planning on ditching society and living in it across the country for a year before I teach English in Thailand !
