It's been a while since we did our coral series due to the COVID pandemic.
With safety measures in place, we set out the long drive to Plant City to
get together with our good friend, Chris Meckley of ACI Aquaculture to talk about one of the most loved corals of our industry, Euphyllia.
This isn't our typical video and as an educational video as this video is pushing close to 30 minutes with heavy editing. I hope you guys enjoy and learn alot from this video as this was one of the hardest video to do this year.
Sit back, watch and learn everything that you need to know about Euphyllia sp.

This video saved my tank. It was struggling with my gold Aussie torch but everything was out of whack. After watching I double checked alk and using salifert I was 1 dkh too low. My tank was at 5.8 to 6 dkh. I raised it up to 7.5 over 2 weeks and the change in my corals was marked. Th gold torch now look fantastic after month of issues.

Great I info for the euphillias, the 1st coral I bought was a 3 head of branching hammer I got 14 years ago and it Is mainly the only coral in my tank. I did have a wall hammer that slowly grew quite big over the 10 years I had it, but sadly I lost it to brown jelly due to damage from too much flow.

Got thru it - will have to watch it again - amazing. The info on brown jelly and wall hammers was super good - won't be afraid of them. I am going to guess Alk test kits (like my Salifert) may read lower than actual and that this changes with age - because I lost some Euphyllia and now I run lower alk (7.8 instead of 9 - and I am often lower) and my torch was happy the moment I put it in the tank - except recently for a bit when my Alk was over 8 (although I think it was also increased flow). Now it's looking better. Just ordered a new torch - can't wait ;) By the way Richard I got a Hippopus - I've been wanting one since I saw your video on it - I love it. I do feel like dialing in Alk is now much harder to do - I am testing multiple times a week ;) Thanks mate (I know it's a long drive... really appreciate it) - Sunny

Do you have any idea how helpful this video is? Ive watched this whole video 4 times now. Perfect timing too since my hammers suddenly started to only open 1/3 as big as before. Skipped a few weeks of water changes and stuff went downhill. Probably something to do with my alk i guess LOL. Now doing more water changes and testing hoping i can bring my hammers back. They were spilitting and the moment they split they looked abit off.

Just went back over the BRS Investigates on test kits. For the Salifert it read 0.32 higher than the accurate measurement they used and it was basically the same as the Hanna. So this is the opposite of the issue. Maybe it's as they get older or something. Anyhow I am going to trust Chris on this one and try to keep my Alk at 7.8 on the Salifert - then if it really is 0.3 off I'm at 7.5 (that's good) but the danger is as Chris said so even if my Alk is really 1.0 higher I am at 8.8 which is fine ;)
@aciaquaculture
@aciaquaculture 3 жыл бұрын
We keep our Alk between 8.3-8.6 via photometer Salfifert is our go to for a quick test and we like that kit to read between 9.3-9.6. This is what we have discover over all the years of keeping corals. Salifert is very consistent and a good test kit. I think you need to raise your alk to 8.8 via Salifert You will be blown away when you do.
@sunnygoold9449
@sunnygoold9449 3 жыл бұрын
@@aciaquaculture Thanks so much Chris ;) Ok - I'm gonna (slowly) do it ;) And yes - I have found Salifert to be extremely consistent anecdotally - like I try to test the exact same way each time and when my dosing is dialed in I am get swings of less than 0.3 (like I test at about the same time at night) - If it is reading 1pt higher than it is then that's way too low for me - so I'd rather be in a safer area - thanks mate

I didn’t quite get the brown jelly bit so could someone clarify for me please? Chris said 90% of brown jelly deaths are probably related to Alk, which in turn may be related to certain test kits being off. He seemed to suggest although these kits give an inaccurate result they are at least consistent. So is he saying that people may be keeping their Alk either to high or to low for extended periods?

@@aciaquaculture Thanks! I am currently trying to keep around 7.8 with Salifert and was thinking it was too low because I have new clams (and I do get drops - like to 7.3) and a lot of tanks run higher. Mercurochrome, Witch Hazel, Hydrogen Peroxide, Garlic, Onions, Iodine, Bandaging, Cator Oil, and a Needle & Tread are all the things one needs to be covered in the medicine bag/cabinet department.
