Let's Talk Data Logging. I suddenly became in the market for a replacement for my long-used lap timing app, so I tested the free versions of two Data Logging/Lap Timing Apps at Memphis International Raceway. RaceChrono and TrackAddict! How intuitive are they? How easy is it to convert the data to a video overlay?

awesome video man, I'm in the situation of deciding what software to go for when recording my track days with overlays. This vid and the next I'm going to watch gets me the perspective of free VS paid apps which is exactly what I need.

Thanks for the video! I have not used any data logging yet. I just downloaded track addict for use at MIR but forgot to use it lol. I remembered I had it while on grid , but didnt use it because it looked like I had to manually set the start/ finish line. When I did that, it put the start line on pit lane so i just turned it off. Maybe that was your issue too. Loving the channel!

When setting it up for track us, the TrackAddict app asks if you want to use the circuit’s start/finish line or if you want to customize your own. I always use the circuit’s and it works fine.

Thanks for sharing, This is an older video but know that you need to have at minimum 10hz GPS and the paid version so you can utilize it. A standard phone only gets a GPS fix every 1 sec and external devices 10 times per second! IE data is basically useless until you increase resolution. That will also fix your section splits, and get you more accurate timing, accelerometer, maybe obd...... data logged to your device. Additionally if you buy a pro version and want to review data via computer I would highly recommend exporting to VBox format, AIM.....

Can you do a quick tutorial on how to use data to improve laptimes? I have a 10hz external GPS reciever; I want to be able to log a few laps; throw it on a laptop; and visually see where I can improve (braking too early, too late, going too wide, missed apex, etc) . If i can overlay onto my best lap, (or somebody's best lap) that would be even better!

question, can you use Race chrono for autocross and if so, how do you set it up to recongize the starting line timers and the finish line timers?????

I haven't tried it myself, but it has a point-to-point mode. You can set the points on a map pretty quickly (fast enough you could do it during a course walk without being distracted). The times will only be read as accurately as the points you set and the GPS signal refresh rate. For laps of a track, I found my 1hz internal phone GPS is good enough at interpolating for the driving I do. I've compared vs. a transponder and it was never more than 0.05s off. For Autocross though, given the margins, you might consider an external 10hz or better GPS to get the extra time fidelity.

RaceRender + AIM data + decent video is my hot ticket. The problem with phone-based software is that the GPS typically doesn't operate at a high enough resolution. You can use an external antenna, though.

Yeah, the 1.0hz limitation is definitely a thing. I've found though, back when I ran transponders for TT competition that the phone apps do a decent job of interpolating and typically weren't more than a tenth off. Probably not good enough for serious business, but good enough for light-weight video production 😁

@@robboape8532 No, 10hz should be fine. That gets you to 10ths of a second without interpolation. Most phone GPS (like mine) are 1.0 (one) hz....which means anything more incremental than whole seconds is an estimate vs. a hard data point. I mean, I'm sure the MotoGP and F1 guys have stuff way more accurate....but for those of us just dreaming... Lol

@@LapoftheWorld for sure! I bought a external gps 10hz antenna via bluetooth ( qstarz bt-q818xt ) Unbelievable precision compared with a professional transponder. For example in mugello circuit the gap is less than 0,1 seconds in more than 5km of track! I checked by myself. Is also possible verify the line/trajectory. Total cost less than 90 dollars. Racechrono is a free app. Obviously. ..with an mobile internal gps is a shit.

RaceChrono wouldn't record on my phone at the track at all. Still can't get it to work.....

Are you talking about video? Or any data? I haven't tried it on the very latest android version, but it's been flawless for me on the last two generations of phone I've used it on.

I have tried Trackaddict NUMEROUS times and always rund into the same problem every time, I set the cordinets usig the GPS button on it for both my starting line and finishing line, and BTW usig this autocross, but for some reason, the timer NEVER Starts when its supposed to and it never stops when its supposed to, and do have a Clue why this isnt working for me,.....

Thanks for validating my findings there. In my follow-up video I talk more about this. I think, in my case, it was the positioning of my phone. When I moved it from the top of the windshield to the bottom, TrackAddict suddenly got about as accurate as the others. I have no idea why that happens though, as the GPS signal reception shouldn't vary with the application. It's possible the others have better extrapolation/interpolation algorithms, but either way it's an odd problem that is apparently a thing.

@@LapoftheWorldI know that per the setup process on Track addicts Autocross section, after I set the coordinates per GPS for BOTH our starting line and our finishing line, under that, if Correct, there is something you can select either WIDE, NARROW or something else, and I have tried every one of those, for our starting/finishing lines, but never mattered, still wouldnt wsork correctly, so really dont have a fricking clue why after all of these NUMEROUS times of trying to get the app to work, it just wouldnt work for me,

If you add an external GPS to your setup, you’ll probably solve that issue.

I have the same issue and I have an external Bluetooth 10mhz GPS and I still get no lap times. Sad because it runs my GoPro.

I know this vid is somewhat old, but both seem very basic, compared to what I've seen both apps are capable of, depending on the software/hardware used. Also, I'm pretty sure RaceChrono works on road courses/point-to-point driving.

My constructive criticism of this video is that it's much too long-winded. I came to see a comparison, and info, about the apps, and had to both sift and wait through lots of other content to find the information relevant to that goal. In my opinion this video could be equally effective at less than 5:00.
