The creator of Mordheim (and a gazillion other games) Tuomas Pirinen joins me for a joyous hour where we revel in subjects such as Necromunda, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, D&D, Tolkein and of course MORDHEIM!
Tips for beginners, Tuomas' favourite warband, a delicious explanation of why crunchy systems can bring you further into the Grimdark and 100% wholehearted sharing of a lifetime of creativity is all within to be discovered. Look out for my favourite bit, Tuomas' impression of an orc wrestling with ordinance and bask in the glow of a games genius who is generous with his time, enthusiasm and support for the community!
This is part of the Let's series where I learn about stuff through chatting with an expert and then explain it to other experts. Who thought I'd get the ultimate expert to come on! Yay!

Still remember as a 12 year kid reading Tuomas’ White Dwarf article, “The Bigger They Are…” all about dealing with the big scary units and characters that had become so prevalent at the time. It’s a testament to the talent that Mordheim is still such a well loved game and that 6th edition WFB is still played by so many.

Always such great fun listing to / watching Tuomas talk enthusiastically about Warhammer, Mordheim and Tolkien. I remember feeling great pride back in my youth as a fellow Finn, when I heard Tuomas had joined GW and especially when I first learned of the new game Mordheim. Being a huge fan of Necromunda for a few years, Mordheim was a dream come true. And it still is.

This lovely man was an inspiration and a role model for me to become a professional Game Designer/Dev. And moreover, to feel free to create, to tweak, to experiment, to dare ! Thank you so much Tuomas 🙏

Necromunda I remember really fondly - was awesome - there was the store in Reading where people would gather at and play and paint.

This is so cool! I remember Tuomas from WD (with his very long hair, which was the style at the time) when I was in my early teens. I was wondering what happened to him when I didn't see him in the magazine anymore. Glad to see he's doing well. Interesting chat, thanks

Great interview and loved hearing about the inspiration that Tuomas had when bringing Mordheim to life. Making me want to break out the old book (which is falling apart!) and give it another read. Loved the little aside on Middle-earth at the end there (one of my mega passions haha) with some interesting insights - I see that he talks about it quite a bit on Twitter on and off which is cool :) Looking forward to more videos!

I was 23 when it came out 23 years ago! So funny, I met Tuomas once and he is really a cool guy. Had a great talk with him. I had the great honor to help design some warbands and also work with some great people on the Lustria, Khemri and Karak Azghal settings for Mordheim.

Really insightful, just an awesome vid. And as a warhammer fan of 30 years, its so great to be able to see and feel the enthusiasm that gave birth to the origins, and arguably best times of the warhammer universe. Thank you 😊

Mira it is an absolute pleasure for me vicariously to watch you uncover bits of old lore. Your channel evokes nostalgia from my early days when it was all new, and I don't think I can overstate the value I get from these vids in terms of good feels. Thankyou for your endeavours and best of luck growing the channel, though I doubt you'll be needing it. Good times!

This was a great interview. Nobody ever seems to talk about Necromunda even though Mordheim has blown up in popularity recently, Necromunda never seems to get credited as a precursor. [I'm writing this before I am have finished the interview, maybe you will discuss it here] It is also a tabletop skirmish game set in a single dystopian city in the Warhammer universe. It also involves building a warband who you gain experience, injuries, equipment and money. It seems to have essentially the same core DNA as Mordheim. I've thing that I thought was great about Necromunda is that they didn't try to produce "40k the skirmish game". They had a totally different set of factions that made sense within the setting. This made the world much more immersive and interesting. I have never played Mordheim and I haven't played Necromunda since i was a teenager. I don't doubt that Mordheim is a better game but I feel like Necromunda shootout get some credit.

Pirinen is the man. I think deep down he was disgusted with GW's treadmill philosophy on needing more and more models to play as the editions went on. Also the fact that rules began to be spread over a growing number of books, which you're expected to buy all of.

The worst hardship suffered by the creators of the Amazon Lord Of The Rings show is when someone gets their order wrong at Starbucks. Not really comparable to the trenches of WW1.

I can also vouch for 6th Ed WHFB as the best. Grim-dark, gritty. Nice power level and balance and decent sized armies. After that, the power creep got insane, the armies too big, too much high fantasy, huge monsters and so on.. The hordes rule just ruined it and made the armies look really boring....

I concur. Herohammer diminished the grandeur of the ranked troops that looked so good on the tabletop.
