Welcome to my channel! I make extra money by reselling things I can flip from garage sales, estate sales, thrift stores, Goodwill online, ThredUp rescue boxes on places like Ebay, Etsy, and Poshmark. I like to do unboxings of jewelry jars, thredup reject boxes, jewelry hauls from places like shopgoodwill, online auctions, ebay, and more! Garage sale, thrift shop, and estate sale hauls of vintage items, jewelry jars, and jewelry are always fun too!

Hi Margaret! Thank you for sharing !! The yellow/orange tinged ring in question could possibly be Hessonite garnet or in the garnet family. Also, the ring with the purplish-red stone could also be garnet.... I'm basing my guess by looking at the Presidum Gem Test and a reference source entitled "Gems of the World", by Cally Oldershaw. According to Oldershaw, there are more than 10 different garnets, red varieties being most common, while more expensive varieties tend to be green or yellow. I love this because it helps us explore and discover new information about gemstones and jewelry. Thanks again Margaret. Fun!!!

Amethyst are more bluish purple while garnets are more reddish purple. The stones in your two rings look *very* different, and the garnet is unmistakably a garnet. The only question is which variety of garnet it is, as there are quite a few in the red/purple range. No gem tester can determine that, though.

With the ring that you think is amethyst/garnet I read that with this tester it's best to have a flat surface to test. Round gems are difficult to read. Maybe try to test from the back where the hole is.

OK. The way I've thought and now what I have read in a gem book is that both garnets and tourmaline come in many different colors. The book I'm looking at right now says garnets can range from from green-yellow-brown-red and has color streaks of white. The Mohs' hardness of a garnet is 6.5 to 7.5. In the tourmaline group the colors can be colorless, pink, red, yellow, brown, green, blue, violet, black or multicolored. The color of streaks are white. The Mohs hardness is 7 to 7.5. Wow, right? As if that isn't enough, iolite can be blue, violet, brownish with color streaks of white and a Mohs' hardness of 7-7.5. 😳🤪 What?? I just bought a Presdium II also. I debated for weeks on getting the Presdium or the other one offered on Amazon, the Smartpro. The reason I debated was because the Smartpro had lines and numbers across the top showing the hardness...at least we could guess the hardness, right? This video proves my thoughts, but there were very few reviews and from what research I did do, Presidium seemed the top brand. I've only had mine a couple of weeks so maybe I should return for the Smartpro and we could compare notes. One thing I did read in my researching was to gently wipe the tip of the nib on a piece of paper. I also read to wait about 20 seconds before using the pen for another test. I had the same problem that you were having today when it was changing stone types on you. Once I very lightly touched the nib to a piece of paper and then waited about 20 seconds before the next test, I would get the original reading again. I don't know if this helped any. If it did, please explain it back to me! I'm still confused! 🤣 If I exchange my tester, I'll let you know. If the Smartpro doesn't seem any better, I'll either get the Presidium again or wash my hands of them and take a gem class! TFS❤

Presidium is good for testing to make sure the gemstones are not glass or CZ. I found out this the hard way when I sold a ruby bracelet that turned out to be a Lab Ruby and had to refund the buyer.
@wendyannh
@wendyannh 2 жыл бұрын
A lab-created ruby *is* an authentic ruby. It has the exact same chemical composition. Ditto for other gemstones. That’s why it tested as ruby. Unless you sold the bracelet as a *natural* ruby piece, you described it accurately - although, of course, it’s always better to specify if it’s natural or lab-created. Even the best-trained and most highly experienced gemologists often have trouble distinguishing between natural and lab-made stones, though, even with far more sophisticated instruments, so don’t for a nanosecond believe that *you* should have been able to. What you are looking to do with a gem tester is to ensure that you do not have a faux stone, a simulant, glass, etc. It’s a shame you gave up your sale. I hope you did not resell the bracelet to someone else at a lower price.
