Dali & Fin, talk about how your conscious choices of where you buy your clothing if from a company with a mission can affect change. In this instance, their company gives school uniforms to girls in Indian which mean they will be given free education, regular meals each day and can even stay overnight at the school. The reason this is important is if you don't have a school uniform you can't stay at the school overnight and while most of us live in environments which are relatively safe to walk to school, in the regions they give, young girls shave their heads and wear boys clothing, so they have a higher chance to make it to school without being raped. Their work has reduced the number of teen pregnancy in India. Every year, Dali (18) and Finn Schonfelder (15) travelled to India with their parents to a rural village in the outskirts of Mumbai. The year Dali turned 13, she returned to find her friends out of school simply because they could not afford the school uniform. Students who cannot afford the mandatory uniform after age 12 are forbidden to attend school and can no longer receive an education. Wanting to do something to help their friends immediately, they founded Nalu, a clothing line that gives a school uniform with the sale of every 4 products.
Nalu was born to solve a human injustice, the notion that education is not a privilege but a human right. A school uniform is the one piece of fashion that harnesses the power to change a child’s life. It’s a symbol for a promising future, a career and a step closer to realizing dreams. Nalu is more than a label, it is a movement of advocates who employ fashion to better lives.
