I am surprised by judgmental comments on this video about a husband's sacrifice for his wife. I cannot imagine any woman I know being content with not being able to contribute to their family. We should not morally indict others who had different understanding of parental roles during their life back then, than you do in your life today. The message of this video is beautiful for any woman, and that is a man has a role to give of themselves to be a loving husband.

He just listened to her crying and didn't offer to help her or comfort her. If she wanted to do it then that's fine but he didn't try to help. My husband does all our laundry. Why would a husband not offer to help.

Perhaps, instead, he wanted to her to be able to maintain her self worth and self esteem by allowing her to continue to be a productive member of the family, rather than cause her to feel helpless by doing the work for her. Never underestimate the value of work in helping a soul feel valued.

Growing up in sports like boxing, motocross racing and others I learned that a man should be strong, fast and overcome fear. Now, being married and having a brand new baby boy, I can tell you that the aspects of being a man discussed in this video are the most important!
@hanszimmer2290

We need borh aspects, applied each at the right time and circumstance. Generally speaking, outside the home the strong aspect is more important and at home the providing and sacrificial aspect.

When I watch this I always think "There is woman" aswell. Im always so impressed, by her. One that she still wanted to do the iron and everything, but even more so that she didnt complain to him about the pain. I think most people would cry and complain to their spouse about the pain. I love that she didnt want him to know it hurt ironing and although im sure he was hungry going with out lunches, he obviously didnt complain to her about it and try to make her feel bad about the medical bills. Thats true love and comitment in a marriage on both sides.

Nothing wrong with seeing that side too since the role and value of a woman is certainly under attack these days, but I think his point in highlighting the “man” is the desire to debunk the worldly notion of what being a man is. Rarely is that definition challenged, and so most just assume that it’s correct to measure the manliness of a man by his emotional and physical strength, his verbal and comedic chops, and his mental and spiritual power. Men in the church view those all as well to be the definition of a man, and they then set aside fatherly things as the definition of a father or husband, but this lesson here reminds us that to be a man is to be a selfless and loving father and husband, and that all other attributes are ancillary.

I think this is a great story. He doesn't say it directly, but it sounds like his mother had breast cancer and a radical mastectomy. I can imagine without reconstructive surgery at that time, and unknown to him, his mother had deep feelings of inadequacy. On top of that she wasn't even particularly useful. Small children who weren't capable of ironing and I'm sure long hours of work for him, the guy went without lunch for a year to show her how much he cared and wanted her to be part of their lives. That is being a man. Some guys today would walk away from both her and the kids. Real men would not.

Many people are saying that the Elder Christofferson, his brothers and their dad is at fault here for not ironing their own clothes. Look at it like this. Despite the fact the mother was a victim of cancer, she probably didn't want to appear as a burden. Elder Christofferson's father was a doctor who was now having to pay huge medical bills. Who even knows if he had alot of time to be home? I know some doctors that basically work for over twelve hours, go home, sleep, and then head back. And then also we have no idea how old the boys were. She was probably a housewife watching over Elementary school aged boys all the time. The mother probably was also the type of person that would have been unhappy if someone tried to stop her. My mother is the same way. Whenever I go home from college, she insists on doing things for me that I am more than capable of doing on my own. Sometimes we just gotta grin and bare it when people we care about help us. Even if it is inconvenient for them. Isn't that one of the greatest points of the Atonement?

Then we find out the father was sacrificing his lunches it shows what good relationships should be about too, sacrifice & teamwork, overall love. Reminded me of the movie 17 Miracles where the man gave up his food for his fiance.

I never wish to detract from the inspiration of powerful women. I do not wish to consign their separate roles to being seen as something lesser to that of men. But in the same way, I do not wish to diminish the inspiration of righteous men, to whom God has charged with certain sacred responsibilities. It is given to men the power to inflict force. Where women are given to growth and encouragement, men are given a hammer, capable of destruction or construction. The man who learns how to eagerly seek out opportunities to build, and resorts to the need to destroy with reservation, is a man who thinks, and draws closer to God.

Just one thought and I ask that you think about it deeply. Why did you feel the need to first acknowledge the power of women before mentioning something positive about men?
