Just some correction. You're correct that a few feet of dirt won't protect you from all radiation. However 3 feet of dirt in every direction has about a PF (protection factor) of 10. That means you'd be exposed to 1/1000th of the radiation than if you were out in the open. Two feet of dirt is like a PF OF 9 (About 1/500th exposure). Each PF index halves the exposure. IM Just guessing gere, but 6 inches may be like 4 PF. In the average home basement, even in the middle, your PF is less than 2 or 3, because most homes and roofs are not very dense per sqft. You can Google "fall out protection factor of various materials". The difference between 500 or 1000 rads per hour and 1 rad per hour is a difference so huge, that I can't begin to express. 500 rads an hour is certain death. 1 rad an hour isn't even considered very dangerous. In other words, the "distance" part of the equation means like miles. If that's not possible, you need a fallout shelter, and it must be dense material, not wood and siding. The more it weighs per cubic foot, the more protection it provides.

Actually the best place in a full basement - defined as dirt covered on all for sides - is in one of the corners. Specifically, measure from the corner ten feet along each wall. At the end of the 10 feet make a line to connect to the other wall where you measured out 10 feet. That triangle is the safest place since it has the most dirt/ thus shielding. There was a few studies done in the 70’s on this, none of the 50’s or 60’s Civil Defense publications on home fallout shelter have the info on the corner technique. The biggest issue is that most home basements have about 2 cinder blocks exposed, as in not covered by dirt. In older homes, like mine, my basement is only about 6 foot high, with 2 exposed cinder blocks which means that if I am standing up I could receive more exposure to the fallout since I have less shielding for the top foot and a half. As you correctly point out, the fallout is sandlike so it will settle on the ground and roof of a home. The fallout on the ground is will settle up against the cider block of the basement and will give a higher dose rate than the same fallout on the roof of a two story home. (Assuming you are in the basement). If you can get dirt or sand up against the exposed block of the basement The weak link is the shielding directly above you then. Sand bags, placed in the floor directly above the basement would add protection. Just note depending upon how much dirt/sand you put on your floor you could surpass the load of floor joist and beams. I keep extra floor jacks and 2x8’s to beef up the floor should we ever need to deploy sand bags on the floor. Look for older 1970’s Civil Defense home sheltering publications for more info.

This guy is clueless. Most of the information you put out is WRONG and dangerous. If you are close enough to a nuclear detonation as you described, you do not have hours to seal up your windows. Soot from a fire caused by the heat of a blast is not radioactive although still potentially deadly. It does not take 15 feet of dirt to provide adequate shielding. Three feet is very effective, 5 feet is incredibly effective. A corner of the basement is where you want to be, not the middle. If you do not have a shelter and have a basement below grade, put strong tables in the basement corner and pile as much mass on top and around it as possible. Books, water containers, canned food, bags or drawers of dirt or sand. If you have time do the same on the floor over your shelter. Going to the second floor of a typical house is suicide. The only way this might work is in a high rise with concrete floors where a mid-level floor might work. If the building has a basement in most cases still your best bet. YOU NEED TO STOP PUTTING OUT BAD INFORMATION. The one thing you got correct is that fallout is not much of an inhalation concern.

The most useful bit of information I remember about fallout is the fact that radiation decreases at the square of the distance. So one foot away squared = 1 (or 100%). And 2 squared = 4 or 1/4th. And 3 squared = 9 or 1/9th, etc. Once you are 10 feet away from the fallout you have reduced your exposer by 1/100th. That could still be fatal, but you get the point.

This only works with a point source, not with fallout in every direction. Distance helps but not much in this situation.

I’ve been a prepper for decades. If there is a nuclear war you may survive- for a while. Every single food production facility will cease operating, there will be no electricity, heat/cooling, hospital, police, usable roads, new clothes/shoes, sanitation, and a lot of other life essentials. Unless you’re an indigenous tribesman in the South Pacific - you won’t last long. And you’ll be hopelessly depressed while you try. Sorry not sorry.

@@josephtobin3347 I’m not trying to troll. And I hope you’re correct. But I am perplexed. If such a horrible event took place- every city would burn for weeks or months, the skies would grow dark for quite a while, there would be many many unprepared people willing to do anything to secure food/resources for their own unprepared families. As much as I have trained, learned, supplied, etc, all it takes is some scrawny dude with a .22 to catch me digging a hole or picking a tomato and I’m done. And there’ll be many millions of people in a most desperate state. For the longest time I thought I’d have this huge food store and live well enough but now I do believe that I will simply give it to whoever needs it and bring a little comfort to a few others before they would meet their own end. A full nuclear exchange with 1, 5 or 10 MT weapons going off everywhere would not be a simple survival situation. Anyways- I hope you’re correct.

@@sausagetherat A counterforce attack will leave most cities intact, which might make things worse, considering the chaos, but being secluded with a low profile should help one get through the first few months which would reduce most of the population. If it’s an all out exchange, it’s the same song with a different beat. I suggest you find others of like mind to form a group. Survival is enhanced in many ways with a community to share skills and security. Also, we face other problems that would necessitate preps: economic collapse, terrorist attacks, pandemics, breakdown of civil authority, etc., all or any one of which would be less of a threat than general nuclear war, but would need the same preps. Good luck. P.S. Read Life After Doomsday by Clayton, and check out the latest edition of Nuclear War Survival Skills by Kearny. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I got the impression that you’re influenced by info the general public holds dear, but is less than accurate.

That and add a Chimney Cap on top. Plus the Cap helps to keep Critters like Raccoons from making a home there.

Wow, you left out a lot. Plus standing in the middle of the basement as apposed to near the wall is very uninformed. Tell me what kind of shielding 8ft of air provides? That really makes no sense. You didn't mention radiation types (Gamma has the most penetration, but is mostly from initial pulse). Nor did you mention the possible benefits of iodine. If anyone wants an honest account of what would/could happen try to find a copy of "When War Comes" by Martin Caidin, 1972. Might open your eyes.
