“I’m too old for this sh*t!" Today we are watching Lethal Weapon (1987) for the first time. Lethal Weapon is directed by Richard Donner and stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, and Gary Busey. Two detectives Riggs (Gibson) and Murtaugh are forced to work with each other on a case.
Riggs, a loose-cannon with a death wish, is mourning the loss of his wife. Meanwhile Murtaugh, a beloved family man, can’t get over the fact that he’s 50 years old now. These two detectives are seemingly complete opposites and don’t get along with each other. However, as their case progresses, their partnership strengths and they ultimately become quite the tag-team.

I can't believe my parents let me watch these movies when I was 9 years old. I loved movies as a kid, it was my thing, and we'd spend a lot of time at the old Drive-In theaters. Awesome movie made in the most awesome decade, alongside Beverly Hills Cop and Die Hard. They all had the perfect vibe! Honorable mention here to Gary Busey, very underrated guy. He starred on some of the most cool movies on that period, and later worked with Danny Glover again in Predator 2. This is a cool and chill reaction channel btw, similar to TBR. You know how to edit properly without cut off key scenes, dont talk too much over the dialogue and not overreact every single moment. All that make the experience very smooth for those who are watching with you. I tried to watch some of the reactions to the batman, and it just got on my nerve. I tried 4 videos, and just gave up.

Shane Black had written some of the action Sequences for PREDATOR, but remained uncredited. He wrote and directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys, and The Predator. He wrote Lethal Weapon 2, The Last Boy Scouts, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Last Action Hero, The Monster Squad, uncredited rewrites on RoboCop 3, Dead Heat, and The Hunt For Red October. His only unproduced Screenplay was John Carpenter's Shadow Company, which was a cross between "Rambo meets The Exorcist," where undead soldiers from Vietnam come back from beyond the grave to wreak a horrible vengeance against those that betrayed the war.

The "Buddy cop" genre is kind of a misnomer, it should be called "buddy action movies" because almost as often as not, they're not cops. "48 Hours" is considered the archetype that kicked it off, and it's about a cop and a convict. A lot of the time, it's a private detective and some other loser ("The Last Boy Scout" "Midnight Run" "The Nice Guys" "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang") or sometimes they go out of the box like a private detective and an amnesiac black-ops assassin ("The Long Kiss Goodnight") or a cop and an assassin-for-hire (The Killer) or a cop and an undead goth guitarist re-animated by a vengeance spirit (The Crow) And then there are certain action movies where the heroes are buddies and cops but it's not really a buddy-action movie. "Bad Boys" and "Running Scared" are about cops who are buddies who even have an odd-couple dynamic, but buddy movies are about characters who wouldn't normally work together being forced to (at least in the first installment if it becomes a franchise). The detectives in these movies start out at the beginning like they're already an old married couple rather than the "two-roosters-in-the-henhouse" alpha males, butting heads. Note that four of the nine movies I just mentioned are Shane Black
@chrisleebowers
@chrisleebowers 2 жыл бұрын
@@tempsitch5632 The Crow may indeed be one-of-a-kind (as the continued failed attempts at sequels and reboots seem to prove) but he's certainly not the only undead hero to trade quips with a partner while fighting crime. There was RIPD where they were both undead but that movie bombed into obscurity. There was also a low budget cult movie from 1988 called "Dead Heat" where Treat Williams and Joe Piscicpo are detectives and Treat Williams becomes a zombie that somehow keeps his intellect. And then John Landis made a movie called "Innocent Blood" with Anne Paurilaud from "La Femme Nikita" about a detective teaming up with a vigilante vampire who only feeds from criminals.

I think Gibson and Glover have probably the greatest chemistry two performers have ever had in these movies. There is definitely a dip in quality, but for me all of the films get by purely on how magically they work together. I also love how, without spoiling anything, the character's arcs evolve perfectly and logically throughout the series, even to the detriment of the action. And, to further emphasise their being polar opposites, even their initials are reflections of each other (MR and RM)!

This probably has some of the best (modern style) music of any film series (except the end credit song for the first movie). Score by Michael Kamen with Eric Clapton on guitar and Dave Sanborn on sax, with credit songs by George Harrison on 2, and Sting and Elton John on 3. Michael Kamen kind of stole from himself - he used the same note sequence in the “Riggs and Roger” theme that he used in the main theme for the movie The Dead Zone (also an excellent flick - a Stephen King adaptation with Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen, and Tom Skerritt).

This is a great film, until the last 10-15mins, they have never felt right to me. They knew he was coming, they emptied the house and left the two cops outside knowing how dangerous he was. These two cops were sacrificed so that Riggs could have a fist fight with him. It feels like the writer lost his way in the last act, like he wanted the one on one fight, and couldn't come up with a sensible way to get there, probably because the film was only to be a single throw away buddy cop film until it did really well in the box office.

To me the parts which never get old are the French taunting king Arthur. In large part it's because Cleese gives it his everything, making it almost a parody of a parody. I've seen the movie so many times, yet the smart dialog keeps it fresh every time. The group was operating within very tight budgetary constraints, and that kind of pressure seems to bring forth their creativity at its best.

For 2 offbeat buddy cop movies - Alien Nation, with James Caan and Mandy Patinkin, and Supercop (Police Story 3), with Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh.

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover characters were Vietnam vets. Now,Mel Gibsons character was ex Special Forces and he was part of Shadow Company.Shadow Company was a real unit and they were ruthless assassins.

They also mentioned Phoenix, which means not only was he a ruthless assassin, but he was specifically tasked to kill innocent men, women and children, cynically in the name of rooting out VC.

@@Hexon66 Kill innocent people...Umm,yep.The Special Forces guys were operating basically independently at that time.The stories about them weren't revealed until years after the war.

And if by some chance you guys have not seen Heat (1995) with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, I'll be the first to go up a tier on Patreon to watch the full length. Certainly not a buddy cop comedy, but on the Mount Rushmore of crime drama movies.

If you're into Christmas movies, then you should try Die Hard. Young-ish Bruce Willis and Snape's first big part. What more could you want?
