Agreed, that's why I loved pre-internet times. You went into a movie completely cold, knowing almost nothing about it except the name of the movie and who was in it, and you just judged it on its merits. And then to hear this song at the end credits after a complete rollercoaster ride was pure icing on the cake.

If you consider it is just getting dark when Riggs starts his revenge bender, and it's just getting daylight when he finally stops, you realize he's just been killing for 8-10 hours. What's REALLY badass is they've tried to kill him twice, failed, and though he's badly injured (We found out in the 3rd one he was almost critically injured when he brings up this event.), his response is to laugh it off.

The alternate ending has Kensit's character surviving and everyone attending a thanksgiving dinner together. The ending we see is the superior ending, and it was an on-the-fly thought of Donner to tell them to take off and get a full roll of aerial footage of the sunrise, just in case.
