Lethal Weapon 3: How Does It Hold Up?

Is any franchise more beloved to eighties and nineties action fans than the Lethal Weapon saga? Through four instalments, the Richard Donner-directed series, which starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as the most iconic buddy cops of all time, Riggs and Murtagh, consistently upped the ante as far as on-screen carnage went. But what made the series work wasn’t the action; it was the affection between Riggs and Murtagh and their genuine chemistry with their director, Donner. He made the movies family affairs. And indeed, the family grew with Lethal Weapon 3, which would introduce a tremendous love interest for Riggs - Rene Russo’s Lorna Cole.
In this episode of Revisited, which is written by Cody Hamman, edited by John Nguyen, and narrated by Travis Hopson, we dig into how the third instalment of the series brought the Riggs character full circle by having him fall in love. We explore how Russo became part of the series and also dig into what makes this such a solid instalment of the series, even if it’s night and day in terms of grittiness compared to the dark first film.

Agreed I just watched them not the long ago with my son who's going to be 15 and he loves Mel Gibson anyway and we love them we'd watch them when he was younger but now that he's older you know he can remember better he loved every second of it I loved it again always Plus I didn't know there's some extended version of one or two of the movies.

I really wish I could like the fourth film but even to this day I struggle to finish it. Everything, and I mean everything, about it feels off to me, but Jet Li was awesome and this film brought his name to the west.

Number 3 has always held a special place for me. My mother loved Lethal Weapon and its sequel. Sadly, she passed away before I could gift her the 3rd one freshly purchased from Woolworths on its release to VHS. Stayed in that carrier bag for almost a year. My dad and I used to binge all 3 along with the available Die Hards any time there wasn't much on the TV. With only 4 channels to choose from then, this happened quite often.

Ive rewatched this franchise dozens of times over the years. I remember when this movie came out. I lived above a furniture store, and from my shower I could see the movie marquee in town, so I knew when this was coming out and went to it right after my shower.

I have a theory about that unknown bomber. I still believe that "Lethal Weapon" movies and "Speed" happens in the same universe, and the bomber is actually Dennis Hopper's character from that movie.

Cool theory... even cooler if you consider the fact that Speed's director, Jan De Bont, was the Director of Photography on Lethal Weapon 3... it definitely "looks" like it's in the same universe. I guess that means that Die Hard could also be in the same universe???

If the comedy was toned down, the movie might have been a little better, since the tone was a little uneven from serious to comedic. That said, the action scenes were incredible and the Glover/Gibson dynamic is still really solid

I agree - they try too hard to be funny in the last 2 movies of the franchise. I have to confess, I hate the Leo Getz character - in the 3rd and 4th movie, I find him ridiculous (love the actor though).

1 and 3 feel the most Murtaugh centric of the franchise which I like. His arc in 3 is probably the best character work he's had in the franchise. Renee Ruso kicks ass too.

In my humble opinion, all 4 films are great. And in many ways the perfect series of action films. It starts as a brooding, dark action thriller and over the series sees the hero move away from suicide and embrace a new family and eventually a new wife. And in that way the tone shift is actually correct. Because it becomes more hopeful and lighthearted as the characters move to their happy endings. I can only hope 5, if we ever get it, won’t ruin what was created. Friendship and family with the tightest bond.

If we do get it Mel Gibson is going to direct and have a lot of input in the script so it will be a proper old school action movie. NO identity politics, radical feminism or wokeness. It will be violent , action packed and have dark humour

Even as a child, watching Mel Gibson act like a dog with a doggie treat in mouth is my takeaway from the film. One of the forbidden vhs from my dads collection i would grab to watch with my older cousins. It’s a fun ride, from the bomb to the construction yard finale. The funeral scene was pretty rough/sobering stuff

My older cousins would have me sneak some out to hang out and watch. It was more about being around older, cooler figures. Probably the sex scenes and when (spoiler) gets gunned down. Unsure because i saw time cop with my mom a few years later on cable.

Great movie! While perhaps not as refined as the previous two films, it's the fun one! This is the one you can put on, even if it's already begun, and just have on in the backgroun and still enjoy it.

I didn't enjoy it much when I was a kid, but as I got older I started enjoying it a lot. Its not as good as the previous ones, but I love the relationship with Riggs & Murtaugh, so I love it for that aspect.

Although not as great as the first two movies, I did actually enjoy this entry first time out. It is surprising that this turned out to be the highest entry in the series. Despite a lot of writers it didn't hurt it much. JoBlo you haven't done your homework as the RT score recently went up to 60%. The Series is pretty solid overall, oh the bomber blowing up buildings may have been leftovers from the Simon Says Spec script that ended up getting reworked into Die Hard With A Vengeance

After seeing Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 when they first came out, I was psyched to see the third installment of Riggs and Murtaugh. I remember leaving school early and racing to the theater to catch the 4 o'clock showing. I was 18. A senior in high school. I couldn't wait to see this film, I had to see it before anyone else! I sat in the theater as the lights went low. The anticipation was palpable. Then the film started and I immediately knew I was in trouble. For LW2 started with a bang with the viewer being dropped smack dab in the middle of a rollicking car chase. Part 3, however, started out with main credit sequence that neither sets the tone like Jingle Bell Rock did in LW1 or set the heart pounding like the car chase in 2. The purpose of a sequel is top the last film not make us wish we were watching it. As LW3 unfolded before me, I was struck by how disjointed the script seemed and how over the top the acting was. Everything seemed silly, played for laughs and missing any urgency. Gone was everything that made the last two movies classic. It was the biggest let down of my life at that point. I was devastated. Who knew in six years it would get even worse?

I felt everything you described about part 3. It was very very lacklustre and disappointing. Its grown on me a little more over the years though. I loved part 4 though and that was mainly because of Jet li , he was essentially the lethal weapon that Riggs was in the first film. I found Jet Li to be terrifying, intimidating and stole every scene he was in. The fact that Riggs was getting older and beat up in the movie made him very vulnerable . In my young mind when part 4 came out I actually thought Riggs and Murtaugh could possibly be killed by him lol. I loved the final showdown and fight at the docks . Another unusual thing is in part 4 Gibson loses the boots with high heels built into them that he must have worn in the other three films because now Danny Glover towers over him, and despite murtaugh being 20 years older than Riggs he has a 6 pack and muscles and the better body than Mel

@@laurarules3642 I couldn't agree with you more about that end fight in Lethal 4. It was awesome! Especially, how Riggs & Murtaugh had to team up in order to win. Loved that. However, it is immediately followed by one of that movie's stupidest scenes with Riggs "willing" Murtaugh to save him. Awful! I also loved the freeway chase with Riggs fighting in the moving house. Sadly, a few great actions scenes do not save that mess of a film.

So the studio thought that only Donner, Silver, & Gibson deserved a new car? I understand them giving it to Donner & Silver, but Glover didn't play 2nd to Gibson. He wasn't a supportive character. He was a pivotal part of the movie just like Gibson smh. I'm glad Donner invited the others which made the studio have to get cars for everyone. Don't feel bad at all for all that money they had to pay, given that Glover alongside Gibson are what made these movies big!

Lethal Weapon 3 was my least favorite in the series, but it was by no means a bad movie. It was still enjoyable (especially the opening, the freeway chase, and the final shootout.) It had funny moments, but the comedy was over done in the final two. Travis was nowhere near as terrifying as Joshua/McAllister and Vorstedt/Rudd. A great part of the movie was another great score by Michael Kamen. He slams his scores out of the park. Lethal Weapon 3 was still worth every second, it just was a step off from the first two.

@@matthewdaley746 To be honest, 2 was my favorite out of the bunch, though the South Africans were not my favorite villains. Joshua was the best villain in the series to me. I really liked the South Africans, especially when the killed all of the cops. That was extremely brutal. The accents were kinda funny, but it was nowhere near enough to ruin the movie for me. I loved Lethal Weapon 2.

Huh, didn't know Warren Murphy of the long running martial arts action "The Destroyer" book series was involved in Lethal Weapon 2. Might explain why Shane Black was previously attached to an attempt as a The Destroyer movie that sadly seems to have been canceled.

Lethal Weapon 3 was the first installment in the franchise I could see in theaters because I was old enough for its R rating. It is lighter in tone to the previous but it's my favorite of the series. Sorry not sorry Rotten tomatoes 😂

Honestly i think that Lethal Weapon 3 holds up just fine because it was a great distraction for us moviegoers to either ignore or forget about Alien 3 plus it was another three years prior Mel Gibson’s Oscar winning movie Braveheart before tarnishing his career with Passion Of The Christ and his 2006 DUI. There better not be a reboot or Lethal Weapon 5 sequel or I’ll forever lose faith in humanity.

The first LW was a master class in buddy cop action. I’ve never enjoyed and cared for two characters more. The second one was more violent and had some clichés, but made up for it in the magic between the two main characters. The third movie feels disconnected, a pg-13 masking as an R, the new love interest was interest but took away from the movie overall. The magic was gone. I never saw the fourth.

I agree Lethal Weapon 3 was a decent sequel, but to be honest the franchise's gas tank was runnin' on vapors by the time it came out, I personally think they should've called it quits after 3, 4 was really unnecessary (even though Jet Li gave an extremely memorable performance in it), I really think 4 was the weak link.

I'd rank them 1 2 4 3 Always thought the first one is better than the second tbh. And I put 4 above 3 because Jet Li was a fantastic villain and the ending fight scene in the rain is phenomenal.

I just love it when someone can pull off an accent so well that you don't know, as usually it sticks out like a sore thumb, like Hugh Laurie in House. Not a convincing accent in the slightest. Where as someone like the guy John Mahoney, who played Martin Crane in Frasier, I had no idea for years that we was actually English. Totally had me fooled.

@@thatdrewrivers Mahoney wasn't faking an American accent- he moved to the United States when he was 18 and made an effort to adopt it. He'd been living in America for more than 30 years by the time he made Frasier.

One of the funnier things I find with accents is that Schwarzenegger has to use dialect coaches to keep his up, for living in America for around 50 years, he tends to lose his Austrian accent that's a major part of his brand.

All 4 were great films. I didn't love all the humor, especially the dog scene. Lacks as much logic as 4. Some great set pieces. Always remember the guy getting buried in cement as a kid. Not as good as the 1st 2 but 3 and 4 have their moments.

When this movie was about to be released there was a young fellow in Australia claiming to be an actor in the movie. He was invited onto radio shows for interviews, got a free stay at a hotel and had lots of sex with attractive women until his scam was uncovered. I kept laughing as these people complained on television about him not being a real actor. Maybe they shouldn't treat people differently just because of their profession in the first place.

I suppose I ought to watch the movie again sometime. (Though the 2nd has gotten my attention often)... Yes, there were some good sequences. But it's true, the villains were a bit, flat. Even some of the basic scenes were bleh. The sequence where Riggs thinks he has to save Riann during the movie shoot. It was cliche and had a lot of emptiness. Just look at the acting from the Director in the shot and the extras who end up clapping.... Then then suddenly that leads to Riggs discovering the drug deal? (I hate the coincidence-events within movies). The bad guys were definitely not anything special. The bank heist where the bank manager very openly points out who is who was too, well, two-dimensional. Those bud guys making the robbery were weak in reaction. The bearded guy with sunglasses, he was annoying for some reason... And the main villain. Listen closely to his demeanor... Notice how he repeats everyone's first or last name over and over again? Nonetheless, I should at least see it again for the hell of it.

There were some very strong scenes and character development but the overall story and the bad guy were indeed very weak. LW2 will always be my favorite.

I'm very glad they didn't push the love interest as Murtaugh's daughter. It's not likeable for a character to get with someone who was a teenager in the time he knew them as an adult.

It's aight. Not as good as the second. And not quite as good as the fourth. But still great. Saw 2 and 3 in the theater. "Word Rodge. Word Riggs."

1 2 an 3 are great flicks 4 is good but jus doesn't capture the magic the first 3 but all decent

One thing I've noticed a lot of people do, is use the critic's rating when talking about films. Don't do that. Use the numbers that actually matter, the audience scores. More often than not, the audience and critics disagree on the film, and since the audience can make or break a film's success, that's what's important.

The biggest box office doesnt mean THAT movie was good. It means the LAST movie was so good that the people went out in droves for the next one. This is a prime example. Lethal Weapon 2 is WAAAAY better than 3. But because it was so good, everyone expected 3 to be as good or even better. So they saw 3. Making its box office better than 2 despite it being the 2nd worst of the bunch (4 is the worst).
