Murston is a suburb of Sittingbourne in Kent, England. It is about 1 mile north-east of central Sittingbourne, on the east bank of the Milton Creek. Murston was a centre for brickmaking.
Between 1830 and 1870, brick making employed over 50% of the local population. George Smeed (1812-1881) was a local entrepreneur who developed the extractive industries and the related enterprises. In 1846, he started making bricks at Murston. These were Kentish yellows known as stock bricks, permeable bricks with the distinctive yellow ochre colour, that would form an impermeable glaze when exposed to sulphur dioxide. These need a slurry of 64% brick earth (the local subsoil), 25% town ash, and 11% chalk. In 1848, he produced 30 million bricks. In 1850, he established a Roman Cement Mill and later a second one. The ran a fleet of Thames sailing barges, and started constructing them. He built a gasworks at Murston in 1863, and leased land to the Burnham, Brick, Lime and Cement company, who built two cement bottle kilns at Murston. During the 1860 he built 150 houses for his Murston workers. By 1880, his company Smeed Dean produced 50 million bricks. The company was sold to the Dunstable Cement Company in 1926, which is now part of Blue Circle Industries. The term 'stock brick' can either indicate the common type of brick stocked in a locality, or a handmade brick made using a stock. A stock or stock board is an iron-faced block of wood fixed to the surface of the moulder's bench. The brick mould fits over the stock; the brick maker fills the mould with prepared clay and cuts it off with a wire level with the top of the mould, before turning out the 'green' brick onto a wooden board called a pallet for drying and firing.
Reclaimed London stock bricks are sought after for decorative and conservation use. The mortar usually used with them in original construction was lime mortar which is much softer and weaker than modern cement based mortar and can be cleaned off second hand bricks easily leaving them ready for re-use. Nevertheless, the supply of second-hand stocks cannot always meet the demand, and 'new' second-hand stocks can be obtained from builders' merchants. Unfortunately, some of the new products are painted white or black to simulate the whitewashed or soot blackened surfaces often encountered in the real second hand bricks - making them unsuitable for face-work.

Thank you so much Kate. I'm a person who absolutely hates video games lol. I'm a person who just likes to be moving around in the outdoors on my own, mainly around the country side. The outdoors is my key to open doors while the indoors is my enemy. Thank you for watching, good to see a local watching the Sittingbourne mudlarks :)))

Never stop the great Lark,my brother. No matter what act of nature befalls you,do NOT let it set you back. Persevere. You live in a place that I envy,a place of deep history. I live in a place of young(ish) history. Take advantage, embrace your landscape! It wants to tell you a story, one that was interrupted, but must continue.

Glad you could find a new bottle location close to your range of places. I bet you can't wait to be able to drive? That was a very interesting bit of history about the brick fields and mill. Hello Adam, crikey, I wished you were around when I was a lot younger. You’d have had a field day down there with us. It was pretty much untouched. We used to see “bottlers” a few times a year. Other than that, it was our playground. My Nan lived a stones throw from the old Murston Church. The Eurolink was just starting to be built then. There is a tunnel under the houses just up from Woodcombe clubhouse. I think it’s blocked off now. We used to venture down that too. Blimmin scarey! 😂 Keep getting out and about pal and putting up your vids 😉👍🏼

WOW Some amazing finds!! I LOVE the green bottle, haven't seen that one before. What as the little "Squishy" bottle? Bricks are so dang heavy lol, it is a workout getting them home lol I would probably set them to the side and say I would get them before I left lol but would have forgotten them lol That is just how things work for me lol. How excited does your Mom get at your finds? I would have had a grand time with my son when he was your age. We did some really exciting stuff together lol I was not rich raising him by myself and we went to the mountains each weekend to see my boyfriend at the time. We had always said we wanted to go to the watch tower at the top of one of the ridge of the mountain. It was only $4 for him to go and $20 for me to go lol so I gave him my camera and told him to have fun climbing the stairs. I am such a horrid Mom, He got half way up and said it was rocking too much and he was scared and I said "Oh you can do it, go to the top" He told me he was scared and I just told him to come on on down just besure to take some pictures real quick lol The pictures he took were of the robin egg blye stairs and the rails. I had no idea he was that scared until he got to the ground and I felt so bad. That is when he informed me that he could do anything epic as long as I was with him but when he was alone he couldn't. I learned my lesson and we got a pizza at one of the shops heading off to the mountain we stayed at. Thank you for bringing back those memories. I also sent him to summer camps and Boy Scout adventures as often as I could. OMG we sold thousands of dollars of popcorn each year to make sure he did not miss out on any outing. I wanted to make sure that could do anything he put his mind to without me and I didn't always have to be with him by his side but I loved every minute we had together lol I will tell you a funny story about apples next time lol. One bit of advice I can give you, always love your Mom Spend time with her doing mundane and silly things, share everything with her because when you get older you will think those were the greatest of times and as a Mom we cherish our sons and take great pride when they become strong men. I miss my son and revel in the memories. I think you are a fine son, you are brilliant, smart and adventurous. I am always amazed at your talents of editing. Stay warm and never stop learning.
