This is a fantastic winter coat that has carved out a top spot in this unique category. However, I am disappointed that Rab has downgraded the down in the jacket this year. It used to have 800FP European goose down and now it’s using 700FP down because it’s recycled. As a consequence, it’s less packable and while the previous version wasn’t lightweight, this one weighs 100g more than before. I can’t say I didn’t see it coming as they did the same thing to the microlight series a couple years ago but I hoped they’d find a better recycled down supplier since then. I’m all for improving the sustainability of a product however, if it comes at the expense of quality and performance to its predecessor, I don’t think that’s acceptable.

Hi Stefan, great comment. It is worth saying that Rab have designed the Valiance now as an everyday jacket so believe sacrificing 100g in weight saving and a slightly bulkier pack size is worth it when they are able to use recycled down its also notable that its a minimum 700FP so more likely higher. Rab also decided to make the biggest impact possible with recycled down by making there best selling jackets with recycled down, they could probably find a higher quality recycled down, but it would not be in large enough quantities. They still make jackets with 800fp down which are waterproof, Resolution and Summit Batura jacket, also you could look at the Infinity Alpine and Infinity jacket, both of which use wind stopper and are very weather resistant and light.

This is just one of the reasons why I prefer to buy the previous normal versions of Rab down jackets, down pants and sleeping bags (and other brands like Mountain Equipment etc) and steer clear of the latest so-called 'recycled' versions, which in my opinion are of a lower quality. All this 'ethical' push by the industry does not impress me at all.

@@danieltimothy223 Fill weight is far more important than fill power. Companies tend to hide the total weight of down inside a jacket and often only provide details of the fill power. A jacket with more of 550 fill will be warmer than the same jacket with only half the amount of 800 fill. They do this because so many people are obsessed with the highest fill power, so they can sell far more stock if they don't include details of the actual amount of that 800 stuffed into them. For example, I have a North Face Arctic Baltoro 600 (almost exactly the same as the Expedition Baltoro 800/Himalayan 800 Expedition versions). It has kept me warm in severe winter ❄️ weather worldwide since 2005. Last week I washed it in Grangers down wash and it came out of the tumble drier looking like new! That is another thing that I have found with most of the top outdoor gear brands, that most have dropped sharply in quality during the last 15-years. The sheer quality of materials, zipper strength, amount of useful pockets etc are rarely seen in modern day serious weather clothing. The downward spiral of quality is mainly due to the maddening pursuit of 'ultra lightweight' to the detriment of important robustness, and the global marketing ploy of advertising 'sustainable' and 'ethical' as some sort of positive flag to wave.

@@Globetrotter-1largely concur. Though I’d add that you may still find outdoor brands producing thoughtfully designed, well made, durable & fully-featured technical gear…providing you’re willing to pay a pretty hefty premium.

Nice review Sam. You might not be surprised to hear that I also bought this jacket from TL. It's perfect for those winter days on Dartmoor when you aren't sure what the weather is going to do. It's been packed away for the summer, but I've got it here with me in Scotland where it's sure to see some more action!

This is an excellent jacket. I have one and it keeps me nice and warm but isn't heavy like some jackets can be.

I’ve had the previous version in steel and Dijon and didn’t feel as warm as I thought I would round my middle. I’ve also had the mountain equipment Triton ( also down filled with a waterproof shell), which although the stats show the fill power and weight of down as being the same as the valiance - I felt was warmer, it certainly has a warmer hood.

Do you know why they moved from 800 fill power down to 700? You said you've owned the previous version. Which one was warmer to you, and which do you prefer overall? Thanks in advance!
@tauntonleisure
@tauntonleisure Жыл бұрын
They moved to 700fp because they moved using recycled down. Sadly they cannot assure 800fp when using recycled down so moved to a lower fp. Personally I couldn't tell the difference and I would imagine that this move is unlikely to affect 90% of people using the jacket. It'll still be nice and warm plus due to the waterproof outer it will retain heat much better than a normal down jacket anyway

Rab Mens Resolution Waterproof Down Jacket; does this jacket compress well for backpacking, wild camping on a scottish moutain. I'm thinking of retaining that warmth when idle after setting up camp in sub zero temperatures.
@tauntonleisure
@tauntonleisure Жыл бұрын
Hi, It is one of the bulkiest and heaviest insulated jackets Rab make, it will not compress that small, I would suggest the Infinity jacket which is still very weather resistant and will pack smaller, or the Mythic Ultra, which is not great in bad weather but will pack up very small and weighs the least. All three are going to be warm enough it depends what you value most out of weight, pack size and weather proofness. For wild camping my personal choice would be the Mythic Ultra, in bad wet weather at camp I would be inside my tent, short periods in the wet will be fine as the down is hydrophobic.

Hi, the Valiance has a single zip, the ladies Valiance Parka has a 2-way zipper to help deal with extra length.

My other RAB jackets have plastic bits at the end of the zip ties on the front pockets. Why does this not have those? The ties on this jacket seem easier to lose if the knots come undone. Thanks

Depends on the regularity. Any friction/abrasion will eventually leave marks. However, it has a durable pertex outer so for day packs and work bags you would have no issues

Hope you don't find this strange, but. How much does a xxl weigh please!? , and does it get heavier when it's wet? I have Spinal cord injury.
@tauntonleisure
@tauntonleisure Жыл бұрын
Hi, on the scales in store it came at 920g, it should not get much heavier when wet as the jacket is water proof and the down in hydrophobic, so unless submerged the down will stay dry and not act like a sponge. The face fabric might soak up some moisture but this should not affect the total weight too much. Hope this helps.

It does pack away into a stuff sack. However, due to the fact it a large jacket and a waterproof jacket combined it'd not the smallest pack size
