In this video I wanted to try something different by just talking about skimboarding, no script podcast style. I go over my 20 year history with skimboarding drops and react to a reddit post discussing which types of drops are better. This video is for entertainment purposes, if you disagree with anything I have said please leave feedback in the comments section.

Thank you for this video, this style of discussion is really important since I feel the community only really has vloggers and lacks people that wanna discuss what really works to evolve the sport, not dissing those type of more entertainment based channels cause they are really important especially since skimming still goes a bit unnoticed but I still havent found someone that goes as in depth and taught me as much as this channel, keep the good work man.

Thanks a lot for your detailed explanation how you got to do the monkey crawl. I also got some groin issues when I skimboarded the last vacations. Good to hear that the monkey crawl might fix those issues. As the beach is very flat where I skim and it is windy a lot of times, I might benefit from the monkey drop in those points as well. I will definitely try it at the beach next week! Your videos are very special compared to the videos of the paid pros. I like how you describe the/your experience from the very beginner level to average and pro level. That makes it very interesting, helpful and easier to compare to ones own experiences.

Excellent subject! I've been skimming for about 10-weeks but am progressing as a result of active learning from your excellent videos. I skim about 5-days a week (I'm retired and have the time) and just love it. I've watched Blair and Austin's as well, which are good, but you give additional details that I'm interested in knowing about. Keep up the great work! I live in Mazatlán and never see anyone skimming here. I'm not sure if that's a blessing or a curse.

Everything you said in this video is correct. I'm 48 and just picked up the sport five months. Anything I do, I want to be the best at. I spend at least 10-15 hours a week practicing. When I say practice, I mean work. Muscle memory is key, like you said. I've been riding goofie, FFF 2 step drop. I throw regular but ride goofie. I found your channel because I was looking fo a better way to get on my board. I hate the one step BFF. I have such a lite board and the wind stays at about 10-15mph during the winter, I have no confidence that my board will be where I drop it. BUT, I have to change something. I've suffered groin injuies, I'm limited to what waves I can get to. I have a tendency to rotate because I'm chasing the board and getting on at the wrong angle. I can't achieve what I want, with my current drop. About three weeks ago, I started practicing the monkey crawl in the living room without a board. (My wife makes fun of my imaginary board) That's when I seen your first video on how to monkey crawl. Nothing say's Oh Ship! like driving your face towards the ground while running. Anyway... I started actualy using monkey crawl about a week ago but only for part of my sessions. I found that I could drop on thicker water (when I got it right) and I could get almost as far with less speed because the transition is less stompy than lunging FFF. But I didn't want to let go of what's comfortable. Then I watched this video, and it's exactly what I needed to hear. Since I refuse to onestep BFF and what I'm doing is holding me back, I need to change. That means leaving the bad habits behind and going with a better drop. I don't have years to figure it out, I may be a fit 48 but I am in fact, 48. Thank you for telling me what I needed to hear. . @@BeachLookingGuy

Well, after one month of practice. I got the answer by myself: YES. Now i can step on my board with any foot i want annnnd without any conflict with my muscle memory. I noticed both steps modes are very useful depending of the surface, the side and the trick you wanna make. But definitely the "backfoot first drop" feels waaay better for my hips condition. @TheLarryBrown
@TheLarryBrown 2 жыл бұрын
Do you have your wax right? Apply surf wax liberally to the top of your board. Alternately use skim pads on the top of your board but that is more complicated than wax. Remove any surf wax you put on the bottom of your board. Use Zum speed wax in the bottom of your board. If you throw your board on the wet or dry sand it should glide across it, not stick to the sand. If it won't glide then you have a problem. The top of your board must not be slick. If it's slick you'll never get anywhere but dead.

Yes i was and it’s not something I’m willing to let go. For my style of skim it’s very important i get as much push as possible. Fortunately crawl drops work much better for me and i also have no problem using both in different situations as crawling is not always necessary

What i made was to dedicate a time practicing and memorize the movements and rythm, from 15 to 30 min in the sand or my livings room carpet. Not only the way you step on the board but the posture you take. So once you get to not thinking much about your movements you can start trying on the whitewash. That really helped me a lot.
@tradepro
@tradepro 2 жыл бұрын
Its worth learning! I also had trouble switching but you need to just force yourself to completely stop chasing and get the muscle memory built for 1 step, you need to take it slow so a light jog instead of a sprint until the muscle memory is there. You will be so happy you put in the effort to switch once you get the hang of it. I think it took me about 6 long sessions of practice to switch and get any decent speed on my 1 step drops.

At 5:10 you're showing a flandland 5 step drop (or something like that). And then saying, this is bad. But you didn't mention, that there are those two types of skimboarding. Flantland and wave. And you're are totally right about wave skimboarding. You can't chase your board down the slope and do a solid drop. But in flatland skimboarding there is no slope, and the 5 step drop has advanteges there. Also flatland skimboarding is not like the beginner version of wave skimboarding! It's a different sport. Adrien Raza (you're showing him at 4:39) for example is one of the best flatland skimboarders without a doubt, and he does really technical tricks on obstacles such as rails, that wave skimboard pros could never do. Adrien also does wave skimboarding, and there he uses a wave skimboard and does a normal one step bff drop. He also does many different creative drops, when he skims urban (check his videos). And he's good at all the drops. But in a normal flatland spot he would always do something like a 5 step drop. Cause this is objectively the better drop for flatland. Check this video, where Adrien shows different drops and teaches the most common flatland drop: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMpofsyjxsqtdqc.html I know your video isn't about flat land skimboarding, but I think you should at least mention it to not confuse people that don't know the difference. I'm skating for 27 Years now and I do both types of skimboarding for about 10 years or so. I also struggled with the drop in wave skimboarding. After some years I finally forced myself to learn the one step bff drop and it changed everything. And I can say: it's totally worth to relearn the drop, even if it means you have to go 2 steps back! In flatland skimboarding however I'm doing a suitcase drop most of the time. (Like Lexi Hutchings does, but bff). I know this is not the best drop for flatland, but the spots in my area are mostly too short for 3 or 5 step drops.
@BeachLookingGuy
@BeachLookingGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your comment. There’s a lot to unpack there but I’d just like to say the clips you mention are just examples to show what type of skimming i was doing at the time. Most people here are for wave skimming so i didn’t find it necessary to elaborate on the differences since it was a bit off topic. Thanks for your feedback

Frank stop reminding me my drop sucks haha…I’ll switch it up over time but it’s sucks because I’m getting good with my body varial FFF drop Water drops are hard as hell with my weird drop but I can nail it…I end up overstretching myself but have yet to get a pulled groin…i think all my muscle memory from skateboarding and being a right handed southpaw kickboxer makes my right leg dominant as a goofy rider..so in essence my front foot wants to be the leader…I have gotten fast dropping my board with a 1 step fff body varial…I ride frequently so I progress well in hopes of being like “Farlen buckanan or bullo” two Mexicans who drop and body varial like me lol…but these guys been doing this shit for years as where I’m only 1 year heavy into the sport…I luckily ride alot (purple green blairacuda “mike”) so i have gotten good at my drop but all your videos and watching all the homies ride around OC makes me see the obvious perks of being BFF…awesome video bro hook it up with the skim mini green and purple Blairacuda haha..

OMG fifty minutes rambling unfocused video, are you kidding me? Here, I'll save you that time. Use the one step drop taught by Austin Keen in his good video and mount back foot first and forget about front foot first. Alternately, according to this video, a monkey crawl drop might be useful. There, that is the total value of this video. Why he took fifty minutes to make those two points is a question for the ages.

@BeachLookingGuy
@BeachLookingGuy 2 ай бұрын
Hi there, glad you like the videos and yes i still skim. definitely not as frequent as before but im still out there a lot. skimboarding is is all about agility and speed. 210 is a lot of weight to carry on a skimboard. if you can get down to 175-180 things will get a bit easier. I am 6'1 175 for reference. but it's more likely you need more practice and confidence in your drop. there's a lot of technique when it comes to dropping the board and actually gaining speed, not losing it. also depending on the type of beach you skim, speed can be very hard to get. skimming a flat beach like in florida can be really hard to get speed because there's no help from the slope. places like Socal and mexico have a high slope and the amount of speed that provides alone is massive. When it comes to board size tbh i dont even know the dimensions of my own. I have a ML hornet currently, but i use to ride a Large because it's a bit more stable when getting comfortable with riding. with your size you should be riding a L or XL while learning and go down to M-ML when you get better and want more maneuverability.
