Lets Turn a Spalted Maple Hollow Form With Some New Tools!

I recently picked up a few new tools to try out on the lathe & specifically for the hollowing system. I purchased these new Kelton Industries Hollowing Tools from Lee Valley so I could try and use solid cutters for the first time with my hollowing system. I decided to give them a go turning this beautiful piece of spalted maple since it seemed like the perfect piece for a nice hollow form! What a beautiful piece of wood. That spalting is amazing! Love the shape and the peek-a-boo hole! Thanks for sharing your experience with the tools. Always good to hear a professional opinion before buying new tools and then being disappointed.

Thanks Brenda! Its hard to beat spalted wood and I LOVE when a hollow form has voids and holes like that; I think it adds so much more life to a piece. And I agree, KZfaq has become my search engine especially when it comes to buying new tools but really anything else that I use lol

Well, not a wood worker, but I kind of want to try those tools now haha. Why are the 8:53 and 12:04 mark so satisfying? Beautiful test bowl haha, as I’ve said before my favorite type of wood, so loved how it turned out.

Thanks bud! Been working on my camera angles so glad its paying off. Yeah spalted maple is one of my favorites as well, its always a good day when I come across some.

I was excited to see a log like this, i have one that looks identical before you trimmed it down just sitting out back taunting me to do something with it. This might have given me some ideas for its future!

Hi saw your tool rest moving during your turning. Try to put a bolt in the second threaded hole of the banjo and tight it a little bit its help alot. That solved my problem of moving tool rest with my 1836

Nice job! I love the natural inclusions, glad you make them a focal point. Been working on my shop the last few days and getting ready to build a set of cabinets. After that I’m getting on the lathe. After I finish a couple of pieces maybe you can critique them and give me some pointers.

Thanks for the video. After watching one of your other HF videos I wondered if my tools would fit the Bosch rest. I have the Jim Jordan tools which have the replaceable tips (but aren't carbide.) Good to know that rest might be an option, I've struggled with a regular rest and no additional support. I'm planning to focus on HF's this next year when I get some fresh wood and after I stop trying to finish bowls for the holiday.

I highly recommend the Bosch rest. Ive been using it for years and love it. Its been fantastic for smaller hollow forms. If you plan to do any larger forms, I might would looking into one of the more traditional systems as well - something like the Lyle Jamieson system or the Carter one. Im considering something like that next year to try and do some larger pieces.

That's a beautiful piece. When you say the bowls and this piece have dried for a few weeks, are you air drying or kiln drying? And, how often to you experience cracks once turning that renders the bowl unfinishable? Thank you!

I am just air drying! I put them in front of my AC vent for around 2 weeks & then bring them out to the shop to finish up. Usually is ready to finish after around 3 - 4 weeks depending on temps. Right now, this process has been super successful and will typically get a bowl too far gone about 1 out of 50 or more. This summer, I have only had 2 bowls I couldnt fix but alot of times I dont get cracks either.
