What a CRAZY adventure!! I found myself back at London's Victoria Coach Station waiting for a coach to take me all the way to Dublin (via the Irish Sea) and boy, what a trip it was!
In this video, I'll show you the coach and tell you about the journey, all the formalities you need to complete, how long it takes, what the ferry's like and how much it all costs. I can tell you now, it can be done reasonably cheap but is it worth it? 12+as hours on a coach and a ferry, getting into Dublin at around 6:30 in the morning! Well, I've got plenty to say about it and please let me know what you think of the trip.
As always guys thanks for taking the time to watch my videos and support the channel. All likes, comments, subs are massively appreciated and I've got plenty more content like this on the horizon. Hope you enjoy it and....
Cheers for now.

This is so nostalgic for countless thousands of Irish, who made this journey going back as far as the 1930s and before. Holyhead, my God, the stories it could tell. London, the mysterious metropolis that swallows one up. I made that journey last time in December 1978. Punk rock was big in London. Sid Vicious was in Rikers Island, after the death of his girlfriend Nancy at the Chelsea Hotel, New York. And the magic of returning home 🏡 for Christmas 🎄 ✨️ with my family. Thank you, for the vicarious pleasure of reliving my Yuletide 🎉 journey of 1978🇮🇪🇬🇧

I have done this trip three times and I have to say it beats the panic at airports as you are sorted once you are on the bus. One word of warning be sure to have your phone off or not roaming on the boat as you can get hit with a 60 euro charge. Technically you are outside EU and UK areas and thus subject to external charges.
@LetsMakeaTrip

Good point about the phone Sean. I must admit, I didn’t even think about it so I’d be interested to know if anyone’s been hit with this charge. Yep, I do like the ‘once you’re on the coach’ feeling as you can just relax. It’s more the overnight thing for me over a distance such as this. I just really struggle to sleep. Cheers for the comment 😊👍

Hi Mark! Just wanted to drop a quick note to say thank you for all you do! In the past 6/7 weeks I’ve used National Express for the return journey from Edinburgh to Plymouth three times (dread to imagine my total journey time)! It was my first time using a coach company and I have to say I was impressed - cheap, comfortable and gets the job done! And I knew exactly what to expect because of your handy videos. I did that journey for many years as a kid in the 90s, first from Cricklewood, London then from London Victoria to Holyhead to Dublin on Irish Ferries. It was a very long journey from 7pm to 2am, then 2:40am sailing to docking in Dublin for 6am. Then from the ferry to Busarus bus station in Dublin City Centre and then get connection to our destination so all together there and back it was very long and tiring

always a great video mate. your clip at Victoria coach station reminded me as a boy circa:1962. we moved to London from Lancashire but went back to stay with relatives each summer. my dad took us to the coach station to get on a 'Ribble/Standerwick GAY HOSTESS!' this was the concorde bus of it's day. all the other coaches leaving victoria were single deckers but this Beautiful machine was double decker with toilets and hostess service like a cafe thing at the rear downstairs. there really was nothing like it in it's day. it always said on destinaton board 'COLNE' but we got off at Accrington where i was born. no M6 them days just a bit of M1 and regular stops at Rugby, stoke etc. lovely memories when i saw that iconic Victoria coach station. thankyou so much.

My wife cannot fly, so from '97 on we took one or two trips back to Ireland with eurolines each year. Leaving work on a Friday evening we would grab a meal before getting on the coach in Reading at about 8pm. The coach took the overnight Fishguard to Rosslare crossing. Occasionally we hired a car at Rosslare, but usually continued by coach on to Limerick arriving sometime after 12 noon. On the way back the coach leaves Limerick on a Sunday lunchtime arriving back in Reading at 6am. Time for breakfast before starting work again around 8am. The drivers were usually eastern European, and really helpful. Once I caught a drunk woman with her hand in my pocket, then in my wife's handbag. The driver had her removed by the police at Fishguard, but other than that the passengers have been great. In the early days we would share a picnic with others on the bus, but coaches have become fussier about eating on the coach. Since retiring five years ago we have not used the service as we travel by car for longer stays, and don't have to fit in around work,

@@LetsMakeaTrip back in '97 the cost of a return coach ticket was under £40. We did use the train a couple of times when it was about £70 or £80 return on the train and £55 on the coach, but the train was only as far as Rosslare, it would cost as much again to get to Limerick or Ennis. The few times we did take the train we always hired a car at Rosslare. The train allows use of the daytime ferry which changes things a little, and also let us use our local station (Didcot), a ten minutes walk from home. Working the day after an night on the coach was not as bad as you might think. We could get breakfast and a shower at work, take a walk at lunchtime to keep a clear head, then leave at four grabbing a carvery meal on the way home so as not to need to cook.

As long as I can remember Eurolines/CIÉ buses have used Digbeth, as well as the service from London to Dublin, there used to be one that sailed to Rosslare and called at points along the southern passage to Kerry and Limerick. @@LetsMakeaTrip well it was 2 split routes, we used to travel up on the 025 from our base in Sussex and pick the coach up in VCS, was normally there for a couple of hours before we arrived, we'd get back from Dover into VCS early afternoon and then it would head back to Belfast in the evening. Think it ran as the 921 to/from Belfast but can't remember for sure.

I'm so glad you did this trip. I've often wondered if I could cope with it and you know, I think, even though I'm in my mid seventies, I could, just about, for the sake of economy, if I had to! Other than the state of those coach loos, everything else is tolerable but it's beyond me why, at the start of a long journey, the toilet couldn't be checked for a quick floor wash, and replen of soap, paper towels etc. Cheap should not also mean utterly nasty! It doesn't in many countries, but of course British standards and tolerance of such stuff is really high. I guess that putting up with Joe Public comes a close second as a minus, because, as you say, there's always one. Maybe if you are staying in Ireland for a while, you could just take a day out to catch up on lost sleep on arrival. Definitely a bit much to fly right back to UK. But certainly I wouldn't say "never".

Hi MM and thanks for the comment. I totally agree with you about the British attitude to things as so many people will say ‘well it only cost xxx so what do you expect’ (see my London to Glasgow video for plenty of comments like that)! This was much much better but yes, I didn’t have to do it, I was interested in the experience and sharing it. Ordinarily I’d fly tbh. there are plenty of hotels open at 6am in Dublin, there are 2 right across from busaras, and any of the big chain hotels around the city are open......then there are the early house pubs around that part of thencity that cater to travels with early opening hours where you can have a drink or hot food.......and just 10mins walk to your left is the famine monument with far nicer view to end video on.

Thanks for the suggestions Kenneth. Don’t dispute there are hotels open but all costs money and I’m on a tight budget with these trips. I did look at day rooms that were available later on in the morning but I needed to get to Scotland anyway and by the time my £30 flight arrived in Aberdeen, I was checking into the airport hotel for £50. If I could get a day room and a Saturday night stay in Dublin for around £80, I would be amazed!!

Bit of a mystery as to how Eurolines is back as Flixbus seem to have bought the brand and haven't been using it.I though that National Express might have taken over the various England/ROI routes as I saw a National Express livered coach going down the road to Cork a year ago or so and I'd guess that it must have come via Dublin although I suppose it could have come via Rosslare and Waterford.A private company called Slattery's did the London Dublin via Birmingham route about 20 years back in competition with National Express and Bus Eirean.

Anyway, National Express had another service, the 890 (outsourced to Irish operator Bernard Kavanagh) which ran between London and Cork via Reading, Bristol, Swansea, and Waterford, with the Ferry running between Pembroke and Rosslare.
