Did you know that Greta Garbo retired from the entertainment industry during her mid-30s and that she spent the rest of her life in isolation in Manhattan? Greta Garbo was born and raised in Sweden and was working in a barbershop when she was discovered by a local film director. After starring in several Swedish films, the actress was swept up by MGM and brought to Hollywood. Greta made her Hollywood debut in 1926, appearing in three successful features that very year. By the 1930s, Greta was one of the biggest stars in entertainment!

Greta had started out in silent films, and many were skeptical that the Swedish actress was going to be able to retain her celebrity status once sound became the norm in Hollywood. However, the star’s English had become good enough by the time sound was introduced to motion pictures that she was able to make it! Greta first revealed her voice to the public with 1930’s Anna Christie, and she became an even bigger star than before over the ensuing years.
Though Greta had been one of the biggest stars of the 1930s, her star power began decreasing into the 1940s. Personal letters that were revealed posthumously have revealed that the actress wasn’t satisfied with creative decisions made beyond her control on her final feature, which was 1941’s Two-Faced Woman. Following the feature, Greta continued living in Beverly Hills for some time before eventually relocating to Manhattan.
Greta was a mysterious figure even during the peak of her Hollywood fame, and she became even more mysterious after her retirement. Though she could often be spotted walking around Manhattan, few people knew what she was up to. In the time since her 1990 death, personal letters have helped shed some light on how the actress truly felt after her retirement. I visited her grave in Sweden recently. She is so revered there that there is a statue of her hidden in a remote forest, so that she is immortalized, but in private, as she wanted to be.

No!! I didn't know Greta Garbo an isolated life. But, at the same time there is nothing wrong with her living that way. It allowed her to live her life as she wanted without being chased around all the time by news reporters and cameras flashing. There's nothing wrong with one living a private life and remaining a mysterious individual.

Да не давали ей спокойно жить,эти папарацци лезли со своими камерами во все щели.А человек хотел просто спокойной жизни,при своей звездности она оставалась какой то скромной и стеснительной, не в пример,например,Дитрих, которая хотела публичности

The biggest mystery about Greta Garbo for me is why some of her movies 🎥 ,are now lost ?, how 🤔 is this possible. So today it is not possible to see all her old movies, which are now lost, like The Divine Woman 1928, etc,. So sad 😢 but true.....

I didn't know several of her movies have been lost, this makes me sad. - Such treasures disappeared forever... I have been admiring Greta Garbo since I was very young. She was a unique individual. And I have always recognized and cherished the unique. Those that stand out and can somehow never be replaced. Those, who leave their own footprints behind after they are gone, and don't just follow into others already there. Those who dare to take a lead, to think and to act independently, and therefor attracts and fascinates other people. Sadly, they often end up being hunted by paparazzis, depriving them from living a normal life. And sponged on by cynical people, wanting to profit on their fame. They are subjected to endless curiosity, creates attention where ever they go, followed by rumors and sometimes harmful gossip - and the result is often tragic. And so was it for Garbo, who desperatly longed for freedom and privacy - a wish she never achieved in life. What she did manage to keep out of the public eye though, was her heroic contributions during WW2. Where she undertook some risky missions, spying and collecting informations on suspected Nazi-collaborators. And even playing a significant part in saving the life of more than 7000 danish jews. As she persuaded the swedish king to grant them sanctuary. Also she orkestrated that the danish Nobel Price receiver Niels Bohr escaped the Nazis, and was brougt to safety in America. Upon this deed, as with everything else in her life, she remained silent

Greta Garbo was before my time. I heard lots of stories about her. Who knows if any of it was real ? I’m glad she walked out of Hollywood. It was a cess pool for females. They were all treated with disregard. > NYC, huh ? She probably enjoyed her time here ! > I’m impressed with all the quality photos & film clips - as well as the editing that went into making this mini documentary !

She had quite a group of friends and acquaintances , so I wouldn't say she lived an isolated life. She even attended a White House dinner given by Jackie and John Kennedy. She went on cruises with Onassis and other guests. She visited Susan Hayward when Hayward was dying. Stars frequently become victims of their image and the public won't allow them to be anything else.

Thanks a lot for this video. I'm convinced Ms Gustafsson chose very carefully the people who she wished to be with and were genuinely sincere with her. She had known fame and fortune and, after retiring from Hollywood movie making she was so wise to explore what I define the fascination of the ordinary, in peace, which she surely did, to a certain extent. For reality is mighty complex: the more you keep people at a distance, the more you draw them to you, especially as was the case with GRETA; had she expected this? I wish SHE knew now that she is living her new life in the other dimension that people continue to love her both for her angelic beauty and her character and personality. You did a great job, Greta Lovisa Gustafson, clever, reserved and beautiful beyond words: just DIVINE. 🌹🌹🌹👍👍👍

Two-Faced Woman was released just days before the start of WWII. After that, the European film market was cutoff from access and the world became a very different place for awhile. She tried to come back to films, but in the end, the filmmakers stabbed her in the back and she walked away, never to return to the big screen.
