I was 13 in 1981 and somehow I had this song on a 45 RPM, I lived on a small farm out in the middle of nowhere and I would play this song and think about the future, Now I am a 51 year old man, listening to this song, living at the beach and a full life lived well behind me, life is amazing

I'm the same age as you and feel the same way. They're my favourite ever band and out of 9 times out of ten if I give them a listen, I have to play this track and think positively about the future - it's a kind of personal therapy for me! It's funny, I know every single track that they've done and love 98% of them but this has a special place for me in it's feel of wonderment.

Astronomical tune, all time greats, for me it's the lyrics, we were so comfortable taking about life from an expanded space, more astral vibes, the best vibes to date, nothing has been able to top it, all the songs from the 70's and before on up to know. What a tune.

I was 14 in 1981. My oldest brother came home and played this record. I was fascinated by this song, and have always been since then. Fourty years ago that was. I missed my brother then and still miss him today. Being close to him, that's what I was looking for then and am still today. I lifelong yearning for being close to him. But I have understood that I will never get close to him as long as he and I live. This song reminds me so much of him, and of my yearning for being close to him. How I miss him.

I definitely subscribe to that future fantasy, the classic Sci-Fi film epic Blade Runner was made the same year ‘81/‘82 as Star Child and set in 2019. This song wouldn’t have been out of place alongside Vangelis synth masterpiece film score, it still sounds magnificent and contemporary in 2021

this still sounds so good.42 were flying so high in that early period the jazz-funk still had a strong grip on there sound.Had the pleasure of seeing them live many times in those earlier days awesome stuff.Along with the briliant Wally badarou they created a great collection of gems. The earlier jazz funk material will always stand out for me.Mike Lindup has a new solo project due some tracks+mixes already out there impressive stuff.Always admired his input into the band on keyboards and vocals .42- great memories and along the journey some mighty fine music!looking forward to mike's new solo album.check it out!

Of all their brilliant songs, this one song stands out as a very rare gem, it somehow captures their unique blend of pin sharp funky instrumentals that works perfectly with the dreamy melody and lyrics. Not so typical of the genre and period, with many songs laced with sleaze and corny macho attitude headlining the charts. The early Level 42 were much more than Mark King thumping out typical bass signatures, more than the typical Brit Jazz funk riff going over the top. They were a cracking band of master craftsmen until their snap and crackle got very soggy after drinking too much commercial pop.

Way up high above the sky All that beauty passes by Whole worlds still unknown And out beyond the blue There's a place for people too It's time for us to go. I have seen the sun shine bright in paradise I have been there, I have seen it Everywhere space people stare through ageless eyes I have seen them, I believe it [Repeat chorus] We have time (In my dreams) Time and space While we're young (Floating free) We can chase to the stars. Searching for the magic in the universe Guided by the stars that light my way I have seen the sun shine bright in paradise I am just a starchild born in space If you want to go with me I'll take you there I've been shown these secrets face to face I have seen the sun shine bright in paradise I am just a starchild born in space

@David Hargreaves Maybe you are too young or too old but Jamiroquai is a well known British band in the world. Pop music but also in the Jazz scene. Check out KZfaq .. they had several hits in the 90s and early 2000s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamiroquai

This makes me weep for my lost childhood years. A knuckle-headed young buck listening to my bigger bro spinning his tunes back in London. JFM and Horizon (pirate) radio brought all these gems that otherwise were not played on the mainstream airwaves. It made that town the best place in the universe for a time, despite Thatcher and the rising damp.

Great music from new bands like Level 42 helped many disillusioned early ‘80s teenagers dream about a better life than the pathetic realities and the few opportunities made available to us in that Thatcher and the ‘get on yer bike’ Michael Tebbit era. God help you if we’re a black school leaver with the dreaded police breathing down your neck and looking to pulverise you just for breathing! The hardcore institutionalised racism of the times was the reality that you simply shut up and put up with in your struggle to become an inspiration and a believable role model that many lost black kids were desperately seeking.
