The only model railway manufacturer to actually successfully produce a mechanism that mimics hand cranked wheel level crossing gates was Triang Railways (now rebranded as Hornby) between 1957 and 1959 with their R.170 electric level crossing. It used electrically expanding / contracting "Eureka" wire, piano wire, pulleys and springs. It even accurately mimicked the gates bouncing when they hit the stops when fully open or closed.

So much better than barriers dropped way too long before the train is even near. I remember when nearly all level crossings were operated from a signal box, and queuing traffic was minimal.

Why did the signal not change?

It did. It was at yellow (caution) when the train stopped at the station and set off again (telling the driver that the next section of line was clear, but the signal at the far end of it was at red) and changed to red (section occupied) as it passed (at 1:34) to prevent any following trains entering the same section.

Regular level crossings don't require the train to stop. It just passes through. Why does the train need to stop here when all traffic have stopped?

There's a station directly below the camera, it was stopping at that :)

That commuter train stops at this station whether there are passengers or not. A few passengers got on below me :)

No I don't think so. I think the guy in the wheel house just waits for a gap in the traffic
