Thanks again to Ben for the loan of this one and all the best for your channel mate! I like this one a lot and don't find the 8-bit graphics in the least offensive. Those hands make me smile every time I look at them! But then again, the 80s are my happy years so I'm a tad biased. Cheers, Jody

Looks good. Only change I’d make would be the font for the date wheel. Great that it’s colour matched, but the font doesn’t fit the 8-bit aesthetic. Printing a new date wheel and swapping it out would be an arse, I’m sure.

The extraction timmer is about the extra hash marks from 0-35 seconds, as that's how long you should be extracting coffee from the machine :)

Indeed it is Jeremy, and Jody didn't mention it. The astute coffee drinkers amongst us should also notice the choice of yellow colour markers from the 30 to 35 seconds, indicating an approach into the 'blonding' zone of extraction. Well done to the designer and a subtle point that not everyone will pick up on. 👍

The website states "the Retrograph has specific markers that specify when the optimal espresso shot has been extracted. The time for this ranges from 25 to 35 seconds - depending on the barista and the machine." - but the extra markings are only at 30 to 35 seconds... so what's that about? I usually brew my espresso around 25 to 30 - where are my markings?

Maybe I've had too much espresso this morning, but imagine this with a VK63 and the second timer is a disc that makes the coffee steam move.

Serendipity? Happenstance? Coincidence? I started watching the video while timing my espresso extraction, lost time reminiscing about my Vic 20 8-bit days, and finished watching video before working on my students’ 8-bit coding/8-bit space invader character creation projects. Thanks for the video and throw-back, Jody!

8 bit? Golly. I remember when that was the latest high-tech gee whiz technology. What a leap it was over the arcade version of Pong. I was prepared to not like this but I'm pleased to have been won over. Very cute design and surely an insider gag for those in the know. My one personal niggle would be the lack of a real second hand. I find watches without one leave me wanting. This watch goes into the high 'perhaps' register.

This is quirky without being over the top. I must admit, I also had that more fancy Spectrum you had!. I suppose given the different design the price might have been ok but I think they lost the game with the lume. A well applied lume to different elements of this dial would have really nailed the retro style of this piece. Just like the failed boxer, it could have been a contender! For the price one should expect something a bit more special and colourful lume could have been it. Maybe next time they'll do it.

Love the flatness of the all prined dial. A bit more anti-reflective would add to that. Not sure about the incongruous coffee-cup logo tho... does the designer's love for coffee need to be telegraphed so prominently?

Exactly… or, since this one focuses more on graphics, perhaps they could have done away with BREW text entirely and simply put the cup of Joe up top, differentiating it that much more from the standard version. Both the text and graphic seem redundant. It becomes that much more of a conversation piece for the owner, then, should anybody ask about the watch or what the make is…
