The vast majority of modern yootoob based shredders (particularly the Djent crowd) confuse speed and note density with quality and melody. If these guys listened to the original 80s shredders, speed never replaced melody for its own sake. I've heard 8 slowly played notes in a Randy Rhoads solo that have made my spine shiver and the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. I've heard modern Djent yootoob shredders zip through 666 notes in a two second burst and it has left me bored. Not a popular opinion, but true all the same. Nice video Unca Ben. Mom says hi. 😁

Because I was a huge Satch fan early in my playing my legato has always been better than my picking. I was surprised when I entered my local music scene that most guitarists I encountered couldn’t play legato. It definitely gave me an advantage in the length of runs I could play but it took me a long time to catch up in the alternate picking realm and I’m still working on it to this day. Cracking the code and your channel have been extremely helpful. Both sounds are great and guitarists shouldn’t overlook either.

"If you'r right hand can't play fast in time by itself, and your left hand can't play fast in time by itself, then why would you expect them to play fast in time together?" Really showed me that i needed to do the legato stuff along with the alternate picking stuff.

Hey Ben great video as always! You know what could be cool for a video instead of showing say whatever shred pattern you made and then telling us what scale it uses maybe start with the scale first like show the entire thing on the fretboard (the entire scale) and then go through the process of creating one of these shred patterns. And you could do a different video like this for different scales. Same for sweeps. Cheers man so glad I found your channel I pulled off the Tornado of Souls solo cause of you thanks! (Out of the several that I saw on youtube I liked the way you played it the best so I learned yours.)

I watched Yngwie for YEARS say he only alternate picks (with minimal sweeping). Then Troy at Cracking The Code showed that Yngwie uses WAY more legato and economy picking then he lets on. Honestly Yngwie probably doesn’t even know what he’s doing, not that he’s a bad player just not a super great teacher.

I like the Paul Gilbert half-legato thing. All alternate picking doesn't breathe and is tiring to listen to which is why I had an issue with early Vinnie Moore. Paul's style has those bursts of intensity that keep things interesting. I've struggled for years with coordination and on a good day it works other times it's sloppy. My best alternate picking is Yngwie-style scaling down on one string. So I tend to find legato works best for me, but that it also because I play along to a lot of Satriani stuff. Considering my age its probably just my style, so I'll try and drop in some alternate stuff to change it up, but it will be difficult to replace everything that way.

Satch has been my God since the early 90s and I busted my butt to learn as much as I could from his first 3 main albums (Surfing, Flying, Extreming) but instead of picking a song or a record, I decided to do all 3. I got really good at everything but the coolest of the legato runs, which I was working towards until stupid Dream Theater came along and I realized I just as easily pick everything. Petrucci had to come along and mess up my whole thing… 😂

Harder is not intrinsically better. It just hsppens that our brains don't t necessarily associate good to music that happens to be convenient to production by our physical capabilities on the somewhat randomly or idiosyncratically created tools we have to produce music. It would be odd if either easy or hard was associated with what we can produce with the tools. In the former, the tool would have to be a device matched to produce pleasing music with little effort. That's likely only possible with electronics. In the latter, the instrument would be a stupidly designed tool.
