Last week's video showed you 4 steps to develop a vibrato on the cello. Today's video is a sort of Learn Vibrato, Part 2, in which I give you 4 more exercises designed to improve you're already working vibrato (whatever condition it's currently in!). As with last week, these 4 steps focus on 2 aspects: first, how to develop and refine the correct motions to create vibrato comfortably; and second, how to locate and eliminate any physical tension that would otherwise interfere with the production of vibrato.

Billy - Holy smokes. I cannot thank you enough for these videos on Vibrato. I finally got it. Seriously. I started cello almost a year ago (and I'm 54) and have a similar outlook as you had described in your website. I don't want to just play nice music - I want to excel. You really get it and I thank you for putting your time and energy into helping out people like me. It really works and I cannot describe the feeling I got when after all that polishing of the fingerboard and moving my arm and not rotating my wrist, etc.,etc. etc. I was actually doing vibrato. THANK YOU.

I'm really studying your videos concerning this issue, being BRAND NEW to a cello (with my cello that is coming to me this weekend). I'm a bassist of 30+ years and now moving to a cello and attempting to "retrain" my hands to play with a totally different technique appears to be quite a challenge!!!!! I'm real big on having a nice smooth vibrato on my basses, and now that I'm about to venture off into playing cello, that vibrato HAS TO BE DEAD ON IT in my personal opinion!!! LOL!!! My left hand is really gonna need some work on this technique!!!! THANKS FOR POSTING!!!! 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯

this is a great video, many thanks for it. One question please: in the previous video I practiced "finger sliding", but in this video it seems the left hand is rotating?

Hello Billy, Thank you for your vibrato-videos. I wonder if you could make a Video about vibrato in the fourth position. I especially have difficulties with the pinky.... This ist perhaps a common problem... Katrin

Thanks so much, that's a great idea! Vibrato on the pinky finger is definitely a different feeling than with any of the other fingers, and it's a struggle for almost everyone to develop a good 4th finger vibrato. I'll add this topic to my list!

My problem has always been that my two hands fight each other rather clicking…😶trying to lose the physical tension while play…..

@@breenaxie4672 I know exactly what you mean! The pulsing exercise is what really helped me coordinate the two hands so that they finally felt like teammates :)

I always wonder, did cellists in 1700 have to deal with this stuff? How did they learn vibrato? Did they talk about lats and rotations?
