Did you buy an abandoned akiya in Japan and discover your floor slants or is uneven in some areas?
I'm going to be using a basic laser level and a few power tools to make the floor flat again using an easy D.I.Y. technique. It's simple, easy and cheap.

Hi from Kyoto, dealing with this exact same issue. Will be taking a page from your book! And the huntsman spiders are fiiiiine, they eat roaches for you! They don't want to mess with you at all. They're also territorial so there will only ever be one in an area, which is nice that you'll never be swarmed or anything.

Hey Jasper, sad to hear you’re dealing with the same problem lol good luck on the project, it should be easy just time and energy consuming. I actually love the huntsman spiders. I have no beef with them at all. I just didn’t like it hanging over my head while I operated power tools lol

That is exactly the way I did my 100 year old cottage in York Australia. I bought some cheap car jacks and levelled the whole house.

Used laser level for the same purpose, tho all flooring replaced from scratch in my case. Laser level pointing to the same reference point to keep everything nice and flat. Learned a good lesson to not over torque the footers, as this will slowly raise the oobiki joists out of level. Realizing this error after putting in baseboard flooring is problematic for someone who dislikes tight spaces. Had to wiggle under the floor to fix it. Ugh.

Sounds like a nightmare! I wanted to do this job in cold weather for that very reason. Tight dark spaces and summer don't mix well. Not to mention everything that comes alive under there. It was still ''sort of'' cold when I did it but even then the spiders and bugs were present.

Lol, we have massive huntsmen in my house, too. Totally harmless, but sooooo creepy. My daughter and I have developed a whole routine to catch them, complete with totally unnecessary protective gear.

Oh man, you are braver than me. I wouldn't even attempt to catch them. I just let them go their way. I honestly like spiders and they don't bother me... as long as I don't see them in my bedroom at night before bed lol

Well done! A slick way to make things better for short money. The spider would have been escorted to the outside very quickly and if not, felt the wrath of the SMASH-O-MATIC MALLET! The laser gag was even more amusing because there are people who are that stupid! Thanks for the information and the giggle. Keep up the good work.

Not sure where it goes during the day... maybe under my bed sheets lol Yeah, I sat there for days thinking ''Maybe I should tell people not to actually play with the lasers'' lol Do as I say not as I do haha

Somebody needs to increase the huntsman spider population to set them against the unintentionally-introduced-stowaway redback spiders in Fukuoka (+ some other prefectures?) lol redback spiders: "The spider was initially found mainly in western Japan, according to NIES, but it was discovered in Tokyo in 2014, Hokkaido in 2015 and Nagano in 2019. It has now been confirmed in 45 of 47 prefectures, with only Aomori and Akita prefectures having no reported sightings." ... well then.

Brilliant! I don't know how the experts would do it, but this looks like a great way. How did I deal with the uneven floor in my 100 year old house? I moved to a different state. 😋 But I lived with it happily for 22 years first.

That's the easiest way to get straight floors; buy a new house lol Uneven floors don't bother me too much. I think it gives the house character and a worn in feel... like old jeans!

I should have said that lol A lot of people jack up the floor and then shim it but that requires way too much work.. and a car jack.

Eventually, when I renovate my kitchen, I'll have to level my floor. It dips about a ¼ inch over 4 feet or so. It's not much, but it's enough to annoy me and the fridge's door kind of swings open brutally because of that. Since I'm in a condo with a concrete slab, I was thinking of using some floor leveller, but as you said, it does look messy and easy to mess up.

Well, if you're on a slab then the solution is super easy using leveling cement. It doesn't have any holes or cracks to escape through. Good luck on the kitchen. It's been one of the hard parts to renovate thus far.

The laser worked great. Probably the cheapest you can buy on the market but worked just as good as another more expensive brand I have.

Hilarious😂😂😂😂 I used shims to level my floor, but if I were you, I’d check if the 2F has the same problems. If the foundation sunk, a car jack and some shims could fix that. Good luck!

Many people use shims. I don't have a jack and didn't want to go through the trouble of jacking things up. The upstairs did have a similar problem and I just used leveling cement but it was a mess lol

@@DIYJapan if you don’t have a jack, does that mean you don’t have a car?? You can also use wedges in opposite directions as a jack. It works really well and it’s cheap.

I don’t know anything about construction but does this mean that the walls are different heights now? Is the floor no longer parallel to the ceiling (which I presume dips too)?

Theoretically you are correct. If I measured the wall from floor to ceiling there probably is a small difference. But even to a trained eye, knowing that work was done, you wouldn’t be able to tell. Now you have me wanting to measure it out of curiosity 😂

With older houses, much of them were built to be more comfortable in summer without the use of air conditioning. The floors with tatami mats where designed to allow airflow and keep the house cooler. This is a terrible idea for winter... but this is the way they thought back then. Now things are different and people require a house that can be cooled and heated more efficiently. One of the many reasons why these houses are much cheaper.

This is the only way to insulate the floor without raising it further. I needed it to match the height of the kitchen floor. Other people just lay it over the subfloor but that's a whole other mess of work too.

I’ve been editing the insulation part of this floor renovation for a week now… my brain is scrambled and in my head it just felt like that’s what I had posted lol In answer to the comment, I did in fact insulate the floor before putting it back together. It’ll be the next video!
