@@strategicsage7694 It's easy to say that until you're playing against someone similarly rated to you and you know millions of people are watching the game either rooting for your opponent because they like him, or rooting for you for no reason other than that they don't like your opponent. The incidental fame Levy's opponents have to deal with complicates matters because typically only the top level chess players have so many eyes on them during a classical tournament.

I think you re right, but its a huge mistake! I think if this is the case, he shouldnt play just for practice or because the games are in NY. When hes at a tournament, he HAS to go for the throat. Because imagine he loses 3 games in a row in this Tour, he will be psychologic destroyed plus he will lose a big amount of necessary rating plus the players will scent blood in the water, which is horrible.

@@eulermachado3968the problem with this argument is that 2000’s are either overly skilled at openings or are under skilled and play non theory moves. And if they do play theory then Levy could risk drawing to a very lower rated player which would be bad for his rating.

He did play the Caro-Kann in his GM norm tourney in Madrid. Against the top ranked player in the tournament, too. I think he just wants to stick with a comfortable opening while he's getting used to OTB play again. But we won't really know unless he says something about it.

I noticed in Spain that Levy gets sucked into the passively "polite" game of chicken that some EU players play. They won't give up material, they want the other player to do the risky sacrifices. Levy seems to go "well fine, if you don't want to risk material, neither do I."
@strategicsage7694

A lot of that is just what chess is. It's a lot harder to get decisive results against a player who is playing conservatively. Taking a lot of risks in such situations can often results in more losses than wins.

@@strategicsage7694 Not necessarily. Playing conservatively has significant drawbacks. Firstly you surrender initiative. Secondly you're very predictable. Thus a good player can take calculated risks knowing he won't be punished for them too harshly if they don't pan out. Now a great player, and I mean top GM level here, can take your conservatism and turn it around on you by making suboptimal moves(by the engine standards that is) they know you're not going to react properly to because you're playing so conservatively, which in turn makes them great moves and allows you to win from positions that should otherwise have been easy draws.

I've been critical of Hikaru before, but Hikaru is hands down the BEST at breaking down and explaining a game. Hikaru is not only able to see so many angles but he's also capable of knowing what most people will miss. There really isn't a better chess teacher on the internet. When you pair that with the subtle jabs he gives certain players, it's hysterical AND educational. Keep up the good content, bud!

On the other hand, Levy scores a draw against a 2400 player -- and the highest-rated in the event -- so, 2.5 out of 3 so far is pretty good. In theory, this will have been his toughest opponent out of the way.

Strange thing with chess rating I was looking at today. The highest rated players are very slightly skewed higher than they should be for one reason, number of games played as white. Hikaru: 1055 games as white vs 1028 as black. (50.6% as white) 45.5% winrate as white vs 33.2% winrate as black. Magnus: 995 games as white vs 982 games as black. (50.3% as white) 52.1% winrate as white vs 35.2% winrate as black. Compare to some lower rated players such as Hans: 947 white, 940 black. (50.1% as white, getting closer to 50/50 as rating goes down) 55.9% winrate as white, 46.5% winrate as black. Not to say he is a better player, as the highest rated players often end up in significantly more draws than Hans since they can defend much much better. He has over twice as many losses as Magnus, despite a higher winrate. Levy: 311 white, 312 black (49.9% as white, as they fall beneath that GM level, they are being provided less opportunities to have higher winrate or drawrate games). 54.7% winrate as white, 39.4% winrate as black. Yes, these winrates are a tad misleading since I'm not factoring in draws and I'm too lazy, but there is something interesting with the % of games stat. This means since they are significantly worse at black, a larger portion of their losses are likely attributed to lower rated players. Meaning a slightly lower chance to lose to a worse player, and a slighly higher chance to win against a worse player. A slighly lower chance to lose against a higher player and a slighly higher chance to win against a higher player. This is giving them an edge on their FIDE. Most important is, lower rated players have a noticeable amount less games as white and more as black, providing less easily won games and less easily drawn games. Not that the ratings would change, since every player has this same benefit, but the extremes of the chart are stretched a little more than an even 50/50 match. They should move to balance every game to keep players at a 50/50 on their number of games with each color, even if that means a player may end up in more white or more black in any single given tournament.
@stefcioss1
@stefcioss1 21 күн бұрын
Well, it's not strange, what you should consider also is: the tournaments they're playing, for example when you have an 8-round tournament - then you're going to play 4 as black and 4 as white. Still, when you have a 7 or 9-round tournament, it can't be the same number for both colours. Also, another thing is the tournaments where you're playing till X wins like World Chess championship or other tournaments like that, Magnus may end the tournament after his play with white pieces without a chance to play a game with black pieces etc. still the average for both colours is around 50% so, totally normal thing I would say and have nothing to do with ranking (maybe except that the tournaments you'll get invited may have a different rulesets that may change that random distribution like magnus case.)
@Owlr4ider
@Owlr4ider 19 күн бұрын
By managing to hold his position so well and throwing that curve ball by starting the queen side attack Levy managed to defeat his opponent mentally. His opponent still had the better position and was still higher ranked than Levy, thus he had less to gain and more to lose by drawing against Levy rather than beating him. However, due to the mental aspect, Novik was so afraid of blundering(and thus losing) that he gave up the ability to win, which was still the more probable outcome, and more importantly the expected outcome of a GM vs IM match with a not insignificant Elo difference. So this draw for Levy was very much a win if you look at it on the strategic level rather than the tactical one where a draw is always a draw.
