Heavily sought by collegiate basketball programs, he played for the UCLA Bruins from 1966 to 1969 under coach John Wooden, contributing to the team's three-year record of 88 wins and only two losses, one to Houston (see below) and the other to crosstown rival USC who played a "stall game" (i.e., there was no shot clock, so a team could exploit the rules by, basically, holding the ball as long as it wanted before attempting to score). During his college career he was twice named Player of the Year (1967, 1969), was a three-time First Team All-American (1967-69), played on three NCAA Basketball champion teams (1967, 1968, 1969), was honored as the Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Tournament (1967, 1968, 1969), and became the first-ever Naismith College Player of the Year in 1969. In 1967, 1968 he also won USBWA College Player of the Year which later became the Oscar Robertson Trophy. Note: Freshmen were not eligible to play, so Alcindor only had 3 years to play, not four. The 1965-1966 UCLA Bruin team was the preseason #1. But on November 27 1965, the freshmen team led by Alcindor defeated the varsity team 75-60 in the first game in the new Pauley Pavilion.[4] This defeat had no effect on the varsity's national ranking. It was still number one the following week.
The dunk was banned in college basketball after the 1967 season, primarily because of Alcindor's dominant use of the shot.[5]
While playing for UCLA, he suffered a scratched left cornea on January 12, 1968 at the Cal game when he got struck by Ted Henderson of Cal in a rebound battle.[6] He would miss the next two games against Stanford and Portland. This happened right before the momentous game against Houston. His cornea later would be scratched again during his pro career and he would then wear goggles for protection.

My dad went to this game. The freshman vs. varsity game. I have the original program with the ticket and the score written on it. My dad passed away in 1995 and I just recently found this in a bookshelf. What a neat way to connect with my father, to hear the story of this game and its place in history.

I went to the semifinals in 1967 and saw Houston/UCLA. Alcindor/Jabbar dominated. I was a freshman college football/baseball player and a teammates father got two tickets to the semis and the finals. I got to go with the father to the semi-final and the son went with his father to the final. The Big E was a disappointment but it was one of the most anticipated games in any sport that year. Previously, growing up in New Jersey, I used to watch Alcindor play for Power Memorial on Saturday mornings when they televised high school games on local tv in New York.

The real GOAT. High school, college and pro, he had the greatest career of anyone. Bill Russell is right there also. But in his prime, Abdul-Jabbar really was the Kareem of the crop.

Still say that Kareem was the greatest player ever. Because of him, they changed rules: no dunking for several years. His skyhook was the single most unstoppable shot ever, and he could make it with either hand. He also was a catalyst for the three point shot. He was an amazing athlete and to me he's the GOAT.

@@sundromos9456 Don't know what short history of watching the NBA you have or what basketball playground you live on but better look up Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain's rebounding stats. THAT'S dominating. Jabbar was NEVER known as a dominating rebounder or for physical play. Power forwards could out muscle him for rebounds. So, you can stick that revisionist history where the sun don't shine. You're a Biden voter, I bet. LOL

@@sundromos9456 Jabbar NEVER averaged 17 rebounds a game for a season. His highest was the ONLY year he ever led the league and that was at 16.9. Bill Russell NEVER had a season that low in his career. His LOWEST average ever was 18.6 rebounds a game. The last 8 years of Jabbar's career his HIGHEST rebound average was 8.7 per game. In Jabbar's career he averaged 1.2 more rebounds per game than the 6'9" Larry Bird did in his career (11.2 to Bird's 10.0). So, I will accept your apology and hope you will find a different basketball universe than the fantasy one you live in now.

@@fki1996 Hakeem wins in blocks and steals. Kareem scored more points, averaged more points, grabbed more rebounds, averaged more rebounds, had more assists and averaged more assists. Did Hakeem win Finals MVP at age 38? No, because he was on Toronto averaging 5 points a game. Did Hakeem score 46 points against two Hall of Fame big men at age 39? Did Hakeem score 32 points at the age of 40 in the NBA championship. Hakeem was gassed by age 34, whereas Kareem was still ballin'. How many seasons did Hakeem average 30 points a game? Kareem has at least 4 or 5 seasons where he did that. Kareem had a 25 year period of greatness--1961-1986. Hakeem doesn't have that long period of greatness.
