Louis was an amazing man. He always ran a hot range. Standing in front of the line, he's telling people what the next exercise will be. He's standing there, arms crossed, feet shoulder width apart. All of a sudden, there's a very loud BOOM!!! A cloud of dust kicks up behind Louis between his legs. Some dipstick standing in front of him fired the shot from his shotgun that fortunately did not hit Louis. He didn't flinch. He didn't jump. He just stood there looking at that guy. The range was dead quiet. Finally, in a very calm, even toned voice, Louis said to that man, "I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave." CLASSIC Louis! I sure do miss him.

Yes that's exactly what he would say. He actually had a good sense of humor and told some very funny stories on break with the same calm voice.

This is bittersweet for me. I took numerous classes with Louis and always enjoyed talking to him. He was a fantastic instructor who taught me so much. I really missed.

I took several classes with Louis. He knew what he was talking about. I was a firearms and tactics instructor for almost thirty years. His classes were full of instructors.

Its a bombshell that the light was "critical" to these guys even in this era when the lights were bricks on the front of the gun. And people still argue about whether you should put a light on the gun in 2022 when the lights only weigh 4oz. There is no reason not to have one.

One reason to not have one is to not have your gun pointing at something that you only want to point your flashlight on. Having a flashlight on your gun creates and strengthens a habit of not relying on your pocket light, therefore increasing the chance of shooting someone you should not have shot.

@Olsi Dema The chance of shooting something you should not shoot is much higher if you don't have a light attached to a two-handed weapon IMO. Using a handheld to ID a threat and then switching to a gun to shoot into the dark is a terrible idea. Am I misunderstanding how you plan to engage with a long-gun in the dark without a weapon-mounted light?

And then I'll add to my comment so the most important part is understood. The light is also able to be pointed at a human without the gun being pointed. A weapon mounted light is a great tool if you are assaulting or even in a scenario were combat is the orientation or if it's just you and the person you sleep with living in the house and you live 20 miles from neighbors. However a headlamp or a body armor mounted light is a much safer option for home defense with families and friends. I have no children and only live with my fiance now so it isn't a problem and I just have weapon mounted lights, but when I still lived with my best friend and his girlfriend I kept a light on my pistol, one on my body armor and a headlamp right beside my pistol if I didn't have time to don the armor.

The first I ever herd of Lewis Awerbuck was in the early 90’s I was in a gun shop and they had a bad ass 870 all pimped out and the clerk referred to it as an “Awerbuck” special. I had no idea who he was until later I saw his videos for sale in Paladin Press catalogs. I will never forget that shotgun I wish my dad would have bought it and I wish I could go train with him now.

R.I.P. Louie. A master of firearms and the concept of 3D targets. He had many friends in the LAPD. Had the department used him as a consultant, the North Hollywood Shootout would have never happened with responders transitioning to a slug. It would have been over in a few minutes. At the time, the LAPD didn't even have slings on their shotguns. Now, a must.

Finally a shooting video that was well worth the time to watch. Regardless of when the video was made. There has been lot's of improvements over the years to upgrade shotguns. Various oversize safeties, improved shell carriers, barrel blocks for the muzzle area to add stability for the magazine tube. Anti recoil stocks for pump shotguns, adjustable length stocks, tactical slings, QD sling attachments. For ammunition there are the Federal Ammunition Company's "Flight Control" wadding to get very tight shit patterns of buckshot and birdshot. Winchester PDX-12 with a combination of a slug with three 00-buckshot. Copper metal shot is now available instead of just lead shot. A wide choice of fore arm devices that give you piccatinney or M-loc attachment area for weapons lights. For oversized safety recommendations. One company is Elite Tactical Advantage which offers a triangular shaped tang safety for Mossberg shotguns. Wilson Combat and Vang Comp for Remington style safeties. Taran Tactical Innovations and Freedom Fighter Tactical for Benelli shotguns. A Knoxx Spec-Opps anti recoil stock for Mossberg, Remington, and, Winchester pump shotguns. Semi automatic shotguns will not cycle with anti recoil stocks. All kinds of optic rails to mount red-dot optics. You even get a clamp for your Remington 870 to mount a bayonet if desired. Made by S&J Hardware. They also make upgrade parts for Benelli and Beretta shotguns. I'll be watching this video over and over. Hope I can put this knowledge to good use.

I started watching this on a whim and immediately considered clicking away as it looked a bit dated and I had no idea who Louis Awerbuck was. The longer I watched though the better it got. I paused to research more about Louis - I had no idea how well known or how good he was. What a sharp mind and a superb teacher, I learned quite a bit and will watch this more than once. One question...what did he say just before the video ended?

Me.....Two 12 gauge 870s and a Mossberg 590. Trained with them for years and decades.18.5" and 21" . No rails or sights. Not even a bead on the barrels. Don't need them. Haven't missed yet. Nothing better than a scatter gun for takin' care o' business. Good info in this video with one exception......Clueless on gun fit. This is the one aspect of the discipline that MOST "instructors" are clueless about is that the gun must fit the shooter, be it handgun, rifle or shotgun. I'm 6'8" tall and well muscled. Shooting a 12 gauge with a 13.5" LOP will beat the living crap out of me! I know this because I am a AA class Trap AND Skeet shooter. I shoot more 12 gauge rounds in a weekend that most shooters shoot in a year. Both in Sport and in combat training. All my shotguns have a 15.5 to 15.75 inch LOP. That's what works for ME.

So, in Britain, you can definitely own shotguns and a rifles. It’s a hassle compared to the what’s left of the free world however. But LA is from South Africa. Back in the day, guns were everywhere in SA. No idea now.
