Love Peyton's style and mental toughness. NCAA singles winner and so close to winning Bogota. Nasty forehand that hits the super short angles. Hope she gets a title soon and keeps rising through the ranks!

With the conversation here being focused on Leylah, we need to mention that, indeed, if Payton cleans up her act, she made a few completely unforced unforced errors, she has great potential. When she plays in balance, she has game, no doubts about it.

Leylah Fernandez's technique, particularly on her forehand, is not today's modern game technique. She doesn't get a lot of torque on her turn, and there much less lag in her wrist when she goes through to hit the ball. Her technique is what's holding her back. She really needs a coach who can help her with this. This whole technique issue is the downside of having a father, who's not an elite tennis player himself, act as her coach. It got her so far, but she really needs some help.

In fairness, she did win a title after the US Open, and made the ¼ final of the french, but then got injured. Her results since coming back haven't been good, and as stated the coaching situation probably doesn't help. The hard thing is, there's always new players coming up and who are competitive.

Without mentioning her ridiculous inability to toss a serve ball properly. Same as Kenin, Leylah needs and deserves a real coach, or else she will make no progress. A real coach would also teach her to think properly, would change her mentality, and of course, would improve on her technique, something her father is obviously not able to do. In the end, this is her life and she is entitled to making her own choices.

Leylah needs to work on her toss, this problem is affecting her whole game and her overall level of confidence. Many times, to avoid catching the ball again and again after a bad toss she ends up hitting a serve that ends up at the net or a serve that is not powerful nor well placed enough, with the opponent easily attacking and immediately putting Leylah in a defensive position. With a good coach this should be an easy problem to correct (most likely the problem comes from a toss that is too low and she has to compensate by hurrying her serve motion).
@jenniferandrade120

@@jenniferandrade120 There are a few tosses in the highlights that are not great. But the really bad ones (the ones she catches the ball and tosses again or the ones that are so low that she serves at the net) are not in the highlights, you would have to watch the match replay for that.

I've been a Fernandez fan since the 2021 U.S. Open and although she has lots of natural talent and work ethic she seems to be spinning her wheels lately and I fear she may end up getting caught in the rut of having a father as a coach for TOO LONG--- similar to that other great player who has been spinning her wheels for too long already--Giorgi. But in the meantime Fernandez can take positive charge of gaining traction out of the rut by making coming to the net a priority and stop that nonagressive baseline play which can go on until her opponent decides it is time to end the rally-- that style is NOT taking charge of a match.

Leylah didn't just roll out of bed and forgot how to play this game, The level of tennis she is capable of playing at is more than good enough to beat a lot of players especially the ones like a Peyton Stearns, I just post a snippet of the Psychological struggle she has been dealing with of late like Social Media ABUSE and getting a lot of HATE MAIL because of her play, I guess she is costing a lot of gamblers their money. I did say she appears to be having more fun when she ESCAPES and go play Doubles.

@@wrecker402 Social media "abuse" doesn't affect you if you don't waste your time reading it !!!! I suspect that she does need to get a better coaching team. The Williams sisters got away with being coached by their father because they had better physical attributes - height, strength, power. I like LF but she needs more power in her game and for that she needs to build some muscle - not loads but certainly more than she has now.

A very poor quality match overall. Poor serving and not many winners. Fernandez's been having all sorts of problems with her ball toss, what's going on? Is she learning a new serve or is she having some sort of injury on her right shoulder? It's been nearly 9 months since she returned from her foot fracture injury last FO and she's nowhere near the form she was pre-injury. I pray it doesn't take Emma this long to return to form when she comes back from her multiple surgeries.

If Jabeur weren't such a choke artist she'd be a 2 time slam champ by now. LAF just needs to play more slices, dropshots and variety like those 3 instead of going for the power game like everyone else. Fernandez has peaked at present and I'm not sure what she can do to break through the wall she seems to have hit. Is it simply a matter of a coaching change? I'm not versed into the intricacies of tennis technique so I will not even pretend to know for sure. But as a fan of the sport, she concerns me because there are so many of her in the previous generation before her that showed promise then didn't live up to expectations. "He/she's still young, it'll be fine." Suddenly 20 is now 29 and you're looking up realizing "Oh, she/he's 29 now? Wow time flies, I was just thinking about their match the other day, you know the one where they beat such and such and made a deep run at this tourney and that one?" I hope that's not the case for her but the vibes are screaming at me that she's not going to be anything other than at best a top level 50 level player who's respectable for the rest of her career but nothing special in terms of achievements.
