[Spoilers lower in the description if you want to know the answer] This one took me far too long to solve considering how obvious the problem turned out to be, but I've left everything in, because fixing computers is all about systematically going through all possible issues.
The 2nd Gen Ryzens are compatible with the X370 chipset - but you need a BIOS update first!

Also, since then, more recent BIOS updates (from MSI, at least) have become so large that they've had to drop support for the pre-Ryzen APUs, such as you bought. To get a newer supported (and improved) equivalent, you might try the Athlon 200GE or 3000G APUs.

I think we can all see the context of the video. Watching it now, 2 years later, it still all seems very reasonable to me. I was holding off upgrading my almost decade old i7 until the new Zen CPUs dropped precisely because the older Zen CPUs weren't measuring up. So I'd say don't worry about videos aging; they are what they are. (Amusingly, the computer I replaced died soon after the new one arrived. I say "died" because it just wouldn't reboot one day, and I used that as an excuse to just move on over to Linux. For all I know I just needed to do a deeper power cycle.)

This has got a sub from me: calm, methodical, effective, not to mention your generosity in the cable re-management. Being the nerd that I am, and not a business man who doesn't need or want to waste his time unnecessarily, I note that the existing BIOS version 3203, which came out in Jan 2018, did appear in the CPU compatibility list against the Ryzen 2400G & GE: the G came out in Feb 2018, whereas the 2600X [which is what I have] didn't come out until April.

@@whiplash7400 technically, yes, but that board is still actually in use. In addition, one of the benefits is that it's labelled to match the board, making it a doddle to plug the front panel into and then just plug that into the board. It's even keyed. I think you could quite easily use the same stackable pin headers used for Arduinos for other boards, but I didn't have any to hand while building.

Its not as good as it should be, they have a habit of using pins that too small so the header cables easily fall off. Its also kinda problematic if your case doesn't use all the headers as you have loose pins lying around asking to short to the case.

Its interesting you mention the PSU as few people realise the changes in the ATX specification can be a real pain when trying to use a new PSU in an old computer. It may be better now thanks to LEDs and USB driving the 5V requirements back up again, but when CPUs first switched to a 12V header, PSUs designed for that didn't have enough 5V amps to work with older motherboards that ran the CPU VRM off 5V. (at least that's how I recall it)

I put the open MoBo on its box and figured out I'd put the Ryzen 5 CPU in sideways. I'm hoping it's not damaged. The pins appeared OK... no force was used. I just lined up the triangle with what I thought was another triangle on the socket. I reset it and got a white LED on the MSI MB. I still haven't found out what that means. No speaker to make beeps, but no video at all. At least now the PSU, CPU and GC fans all work. This is my first build since my last Win machine in about 1995. I went to Mac in about 2000. There are advantages to having an oversized psu, they tend to be most efficient at about 50-70% utilization, so you can get better efficiency by having a oversized psu vs one that is just big enough. On top of that, because the psu is running at let's say 50%, there will be less heat, and less load in general, so you get less wear on the components, most likely resulting in longer life.

After replacing every component with the exception of the cpu my build still did not post. So I guess my new ryzen 7 3800x died on me. waiting for my new cpu to test everything out again. I’ve reseated then CPU and reapplied thermal paste, Reseated the GPU and RAM. Tested it in the bench and in the chassis and it won’t post man. I’ve taken out the battery in the motherboard and put it back. It’s a brand new MOBO out of the box, how can I tell if my MOBO is faulty??? We’ve spent a bunch of money... :( not to mention the 2TB Seattle HD and Samsung 860 EVO SSD.

yes, you'll need at least version 3.3. AMD actually have a programme where they'll send a "boot kit" - the cheapest weakest AM4 CPU (a modern "Athlon") solely for the purpose of updating the BIOS to support newer Ryzen generations, and then once done it has to be returned.
@MatthewSuffidy

Oh the old cpu not supported yet issue. Thought it was going to be a need to clear cmos because the ram is at the wrong clock rate or board was shorted or something. Asus is the one that actually WORKS in my experience. My b350 prime can flash in the bios from disc but some directories are not visible for some reason.

I have no plans for it at the moment... PSUs are more complicated than people think. A lot of folks parrot the "just replace the capacitors" line, but there's a great deal more than just caps that can go wrong, and many faults require you to reverse-engineer the switch mode controllers and then probe their outputs with a scope to check for anomalies... and it goes on. Generally not worth it when most PSUs are < $100.
