Exactly Even Lebron knows I could wrote long thing about rules pascal play etc.Basketball today is weak back in those days players wouldn't get opportunities to shoot more than 4 3 pointers a game or coach would sit you on bench.Think Jordan pistons made the Jordan rules if Jordan came to hoop or even bird the hammered them not foul but they would try break there arms legs take them to the floor etc Now a days players don't even get touched and fouls are called or little contact and the call flagrant foul or technical foul. which was a ever play foul back then.Back then you only got a technical if threw punches or fights and even sometimes then it was still game on not even foul sometimes. different times different player but Todd you said it best Lebrun even said Jordan dr j bird 3 top players who were some the best all time players I know a lot basketball everybody goes to stats or championships which helps but is not always who was the best back then you couldn't choose which team to go play for or create super teams. as well could go on for days.I respect all times and players etc I was born 76 seen alot and knew even some older greats my parents and still watch today.Now a days fitness crazy and there are steroids as well not like that back in day either.

To correct your son: The defense was more physical back then. The rules today barely let you touch an offensive player. The game against the Atlanta Hawks you watched was clips from the last few minutes of the game and Atlanta was getting blown out. If Bird played under todays rules he would score 60 a night

I don’t think so because Larry was unselfish. The one time he was feuding with his teammates he went for 50 and lost the game...kind of like the night Jordan got 63 and MJ’s team lost. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bird averaging 45 and his teammates averaging 30.

The physicality of the game back in the 80's and early 90's is something younger fans of the game often underestimate. Monsters like Rodmen, Laimbeer, Rick Mahorn, and Charles Barkley to name a few were physically beating up players. Bird's vision, and ability to read AND UNDERSTAND the game were special. There have been times when a player will show a special moment in a game or even a season but I've not seen anyone ever put together a career and effect and change the game like Larry. Thanks for the video.

In 1985, the Boston Celtics legend had arguably the greatest game of his career, almost recording a quadruple-double in a blowout win over the Utah Jazz. Bird only played 33 minutes, logging 30 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, and 9 steals. When asked why he sat out the 4th Quarter, he said "I've done enough damage". Larry was a Savage ...

22:50 you comment that this could have been a foul. It was. The shot didn't count, and Larry got 2 free throws out of it. He only had 1 three pointer in this game. With only 1 three, and no overtime, dumped 60 on the hawks. Defense wasn't really bad back then, he made good defenders look bad. Larry Bird was so amazing he could have numbers higher than anyone would still be able to come close to. The thing so many, especially young people, don't understand that numbers don't necessarily mean you're better. Larry gave the other team some serious arrogance but when it came to numbers the only ones that mattered to him was the numbers on the score board. He let everyone of his teammates on the floor shine too. Assisted Kevin McHale in beating his own points record. That was something a lot of great players don't do when the opportunity is there. They have the me/team attitude instead of the team/me attitude. Plus all the seasons he played with a back injury. His finger was destroyed in a baseball game before the NBA and he said the ball never felt the same in his hands again. Had surgery on both Achilles tendons. Had an infection in his toe and they cut it over two inches to drain the infection and he wrapped it up and played the entire game. He got his cheek bone broken in a game and sitting in the locker room watching his team fall behind he went back and finished the game with a win. Another time his eye socket got broken and he finished the game. It took between 4 and 5 hours before each game to stretch try to get his back to last 3 or 4 hours to play. Refused shots, and wouldn't take anything for pain. When he came off the court he would have to lay on the floor. In my book he was better than the best. Could you imagine what he could have done without the injuries and having to retire when he did. Larry would have still had many years of great basketball to play. Plus he was a quarterback when it came to passing full court and might as well have had his eyes closed for regular passing and can't ever forget the tap passing. There are some great videos out there. My favorite shot is the one over the back board.

@EmmaChihuahua81 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mark_Ellzy Labron is indeed a gifted athlete, but I have not seen him display the mental fortitude needed to play in the 80's. That was a weakness in Jordan's early days...the head games teams like the Celtics, 76ers, Lakers, and Pistons all played against their opponents. They excelled at forcing opposing teams to play their way. There have been glimmers of that kind of mental strength in Lebron's career (down against GS and bringing his team back for the win), but it isn't a defining characteristic of his overall career. So yes, gifted athlete, but I don't think he'd be referred to as king James if he'd have played back in the day. There are very few of the all-time greats who's game could be played today and still have their accomplishments. Bill Russell's Celtics for example wouldn't have 11 rings playing in todays NBA. Conversely, Golden State and Stef Curry wouldn't be the dominant team they are today in the 50's, 60's, or 70's because there was no 3 point line back in the day.

Okay I haven't finished this yet but there's a couple things that you're not taking into account young man. #1 is Larry is the main reason that people defended him that way. He had people so messed up about whether he was going to shoot or pass that they didn't know what to do around him. #2 the majority of the great plays you see him do are with people in his face. It doesn't matter whether he's closely guarded or not, his highlights are both consistently. #3 a huge portion of his highlights are of shots like that but are game winners and big shots. I defy you to find anybody else that has more game-winning shots in big plays than Larry Bird. Just some more thoughts to consider for you. Oh by the way James Worthy said he would much rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird! That could be the greatest compliment ever...I'm just sayin'

I feel like what JoJo isn't' understanding is that Bird played a hustle, cerebral, work ethic based game because he wasn't the best athlete on the court. Many times his game beat the best athlete on the court with awareness alone. My personal feeling is that he would have been in bron's head and had him on tilt, frustrated, aggravated, and off his game in the first 3 min of the game

Jojo, I'll just say this: Larry Bird was an All-Star in every season he played more than 6 games (in '89-'90, he missed basically the whole season because of injury/surgery). He was a back to back to back MVP in a league with Earvin Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Isaiah Thomas, Glenn "Doc" Rivers, Julius Erving, Dominique Wilkins, and Michael Jeffrey Jordan. Bird put up 47 on the Blazers left handed after telling the press he was saving his right hand for the Lakers. In my mind, Larry Joe Bird is the best SF ever. To me, the single biggest difference between LeBron and Larry is that Larry made everyone around him better.

Magic Johnson himself said Larry was the scariest player he ever played against. He also said that Larry was, in his opinion, the best pure basketball player ever. They are also incredibly good and close friends. Larry beat all the best players of his generation, despite having far less physical talent and a bad back. The list of guys he beat are a whose who of Hall of Famers. There is NO way I would not include him in a SUPER team, he was simply on another level.

Bird was the best all-around player the NBA ever had. That's compared to EVERYBODY! Sure, there have been better scorers than Bird (very few). Bird could go long range or/and he could post with the best of them. But, he also averaged 10 boards/game FOR HIS CAREER! He was also the best passing forward to ever play the game (sorry LeBron fans, it's truth). Oh, yeh, he also led the league in FT% 4 times in his career. He invented/was the founding father of the 90/50/40 club. When you put all of these things together, no one can hold a candle to him. Sure, MJ was this, Kobe was that, LeBron is this ..... can't take anything away from any of them, but, none of them could do all that Bird could do. If that hurts someone's feelings, well .... show me where I'm wrong. :)

He single handedly caused a 32 game winning shift his rookie season compared to the season before he got to the league. LeBron's era was night and day way softer than Bird's. Throughout Bird's years you often wondered if you were watching an NFL game instead of basketball because it was pretty damn rough at times with guys getting flattened in the paint if they were driving to the basket. Afterwards they would just get up and continue playing without complaining unlike the ridiculous flopping in the current era when there's the most minimal contact imaginable.

It's a little easier to play "tough defense" in a era in which there are almost no centers, you can play zone and the offense relies heavily on perimeter shooting. Ninety percent of defense seems to be the token gesture of sliding a guy into the paint to force the driving player to kick it back out so they can shoot another fairly uncontested three.

Jordan learned his verbal demoralization as a student of Larry Bird, and took it to the next level. One of the biggest lessons he learned from playing against Bird, was that telling your opponent that you were going to do something, that they couldn't do anything about it, and then backing it up was far more demoralizing than just trash talking people. It doesn't matter if the Warriors won one more game than the Bulls, because unlike the Bulls, they didn't finish the job in the end.

Do some homework not just for Bird but the Original Dream Team, ANY of those players would embarrass any player in the league now. Elbows, shoving, push offs, nose bursting separated shoulder days were every game. Now it's oh his hair moved, it's a foul ... Psssh it's a joke like the targeting calls in the NFL. Those days were brutal. Anyway my point is the Dream Team roster those players were Hall of Fame caliber. Those were the glory days of basketball. Today they try to put an all-star team together with a crazy amount of money and still lose. But when they finally got a winning all-star team, nobody wants to watch the game because the competition stinks 🦨
