He said, "I'm the illest MF from here to Gardena." Gardena is a city south of Los Angeles where the guy who did keyboards for Beastie Boys, Money Mark lived. It's also the city I'm from, so this line in the song was always popular when I was growing up.

@@josephlabranch6595 This was from The Beastie Boys Book: "We were still getting to know Mark Nishita, and I guess he was going through a transitional phase during this time. (He briefly went under the moniker Keyboard Liquor Mark. “Always drinkin’ wine.”) We met practically every night at the studio, and unbeknownst to us, he sometimes spent the night there, on the couch. His drive back to Gardena was a long one. Especially at 3: 26 A.M. and two bottles of wine deep. He’d do the safe thing and just crash on the couch. "

@@dodgingcars My nephew is good friends with Mark's son. One day they went to visit Mark and apparently ended up at Mike D's house. We were on the phone and he casually mentioned where he was. I nearly passed out from excitement and jealousy. My 30+ year long love of the Beastie Boys wanted to beg him to put Mike on the phone or let me come by on a trumped up pretense of picking him up. But my love of my nephew and not wanting to be "that guy" won the day.

Music videos can add so much to fill out the story of the song. I was so pissed as MTV switched format and videos suffered. I’m so happy when artists make their videos on KZfaq. Thanks for being that up... and total respect for this video!!!

Rick Rubin only produced their first record. They took over the production with engineer Mario Caldato. Also, MCA did a lot of their videos himself. Super creative bunch.

I’m so glad you did this one! One of my favorites. In Eminem’s Berzerk video, the parts where he’s wearing a Pistons t-shirt and the camera angle is looking up at him, is in homage to this video. P.S. I LOVE the beanie! You wear it well.

Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons cofounded Def Jam and ran it out of a dorm room in NYC. LL Cool J and The Beasties were the first artists they found and signed. Also, I believe Public Enemy's "it Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" was recorded under Def Jam. Legendary label in Hip Hop. Paul's Boutique is the best beasties album and one of the best all time hip hop records

so the early videos were produced by the record label but later during the 90's MCA's Uncle from Switzerland Nathanial Hornblower directed a lot of them. A very prolific Swiss director who had all the original ideas for star wars (Might wanna google that). Oh sabotage was directed by the legendery director Spike Jonez

License to Ill is a classic flawless breakout album. But the 90s is when they hit their creative height and brilliance. Originality and familiarity. They created things in the 90s no one has been able to recreate since. They brought to the rap and rock industry something much needed...unity. They blew our minds in 86 and never stopped...like a non-stop tornado bouncing through our eardrums. And we still love it! 😀
