The original song was written by Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel in 1965. Disturbed released this cover 50 years later in 2015, and when asked about it, Paul Simon (he's still alive) said he really liked it and said it was impressed with how powerful a performance it was. It must be really something for an original artist to like your cover.

That's why this cover is one of the best (if not the best) covers of all time. Simon and Garfunkel sang about how people need to pay attention and connect on a more emotional level. 50 years later, Disturbed took the same song and said, "These are emotions! You still aren't paying attention!"

@Ray Johnson it's a song that is supposed to evoke emotions. if you'd like to find out what the song is about, read the lyrics as a poem. it's initially supposed to be a warning about the hazards of the rise of technology. personally, I see the Simon and Garfunkel version as a warning, and the Disturbed version as a reprimand. From my experience, Simon and Garfunkel's version, which is, of course, the original version, was a warning about a potential future that was years, perhaps decades, away. Disturbed's cover of it is also a warning, the same warning that S&G gave back in the 60s, with the difference being that said future was either right here or about to be here in days or weeks rather than years or decades. We still have time to evaluate and decide if this future is what we want or if we want to change course, but the time for planning is over; Now we need action.

The emotion IS strong, especially in this time we are living through. Simon and Garfunkel wrote and sang this song in the early 60's, another time of strife and unrest. But Disturbed's version evokes an even more ominous imagery of the consequence of living in our own bubbles of belief and not hearing or listening or thinking about who we are, and even more importantly, who we want to be. PS: I think you're a terrific kid. Keep doing what you're doing. You are listening. You are lifting the darkness.

Suggestion for the future: check out Simon & Garfunkel's original version of this song. Hearing them back to back gives a good understanding of what makes a version (changing musical arrangements) so much more than just another cover (replaying the same arrangement). It also gives a chilling sense of how the first was a mellancolic warning about the path society was taking and this became a raging complaint that no one listened.

They announced that they had a special guest and out come the Righteous Brothers and they got to do a set at the show. They were able to take the audience back to the time they played the first time At the end of the show that they won't discuss the show with their friends until they went because they wanted to keep their guests to be just as surprised as we were and people did listen I have to say that my mind was blown away

"I don't remember Disturbed being a soothing band." 😆😆 I watched you react to Down with the Sickness right before this one. Opposite of soothing for sure. David has got to be one of the most talented and gifted vocalists I've ever heard. His ability to convey and inspire emotion with his voice is mind-blowing.

you're right Disturbed isnt usually soothing like this, they are aggressive, they are powerful and they are not afraid to speak out, but David knew that he wanted to treat this differently from his other works, as to not lose the original message of the song.

This is a powerful song. It always has been. It's frickin' AMAZING! I'm glad that you felt something very similar to when I first did. I was at work when I first heard it. I stopped moving, sat down, and just stared at the stereo. I couldn't do anything else until the song was over. It's amazing and touching and powerful. And the way that they do the gradual build-up in the sound just makes it hit that much harder.

The biggest compliment an artist can get is that you were so moved by their art that you have no words to express or portray how you feel...that's by far the best thing about ALL music to me...and why im believe I (and so many others) enjoy watching you and other people react to music that has moved us similarly...its a beautiful thing to watch a human being connect with another without even meeting...pretty awesome indeed. So many judge Disturbed because of Down with the Sickness and David's shaved head. They have written some of the most meaningful songs I've heard in a long long time. Their cover of Sting's "If I ever lose my faith" is awesome. "Reason to Fight" is literally a life saver. "Hold onto Memories" is perhaps the most touching song I've heard in so long. "Inside the Fire" is a tough one to listen to but deals with what David went through as a teenager. Disturbed pours their hearts and soul into their music and it shows.

Seen them live and up close three times and they've been on-point every time. Last concert I went to, I got an amazingly great video of them performing that song. It was a small venue, a Shriners' Mosque auditorium, but they performed that show like it was Madison Square Garden. David Draiman's age is beginning to show. He doesn't dominate the stage like he used to. Pretty much stays at the mic stand. But his voice is as powerful as ever. If you get the chance to see them, you should.

Disturbed is normally a much harder sounding band. The song was originally sung and written by Simon and Garfunkle in 1964. It shows the true range of Disturbed. They also performed this song on Conan and, believe it or not, it's a better version than this album version.

Fun Fact: David Draiman, the lead singer for Disturbed, learned of his gift for song early on at Synagogue. He did train to be an Cantor. (Similar to a Rabbi, or someone who leads prayers in Synagogue.) But even tho it disappointed his grandfather he took his voice and life in a different direction and joined a band.
