Divx is the name of the video compressor, mkv is a 'container' format, where you can include the movie (compressed with Divx or any other compressor) plus extra stuff like subtitles, different lenguage audio channels, etc... The most usual HD compressor used on the mkvs is Divx, so most of the times is the same, but it can de diffrent, yes.

I bought the LG 47 SL90 plugged in a 1TB external hdd with a few hundred movies on it and it play nearly all of them flawlessly, The problem now that im getting is its lack of Mpeg-4 TS support and DTS support on some of my Large HD vidoes but most vidoes it plays fine! MKV. 1080p Full HD no problem =-) Very pleased with this tv so far so good, they just need to make it easy to update the Codec's!!

I see entertainment option in place of the USB but still I can play the movie through the movie list which is same. The problem with I am facing is the browsing speed inside the USB from the TV is very very very very slow. The menu show the list in albhabetical sorted order only which takes more than 2 minutes to load any folder or list. I can list only 5 movie in menu and the next page takes about 2-5 minutes to load next or previous. It looks its hanged in between. Is there any way to fix it. I remember it was not like an year ago. Can i update the firmware on my own ? Any help is appreciated.

@aleboogie dunno never tried it on another device, but i think it should work, it really depends on the tv-s firware (software) version. but i don't know which allows that function in your case...BUT NOTE if you do this you can be sure, you lose your warranty, they won't repair it for free anymore and i don't know your type of TV is it a plasma or LCD? i think it's an option only to LCD's, but it's worth a try, if the warranty doesn't interest you.

I have the usb port but i dont have the usb option in the menu...

when i plug my external harddrive into the tv,its own menu comes up only listing pictures and music (USB option doesnt appear when i click menu). if i click either of those options the tv goes black screen and any buttn i press will not do anything. the tv stays blank until i unplug the usb which then the tv shows what the usb menu should look like once i access the pictures option, but then disapers because i unpluged the hard drive.

@hegyimutymuty It is an LCD TV, I've tried your steps but no luck. Mine has touch-sensitive buttons and their aren't as precise as normal buttons. But I was thinking that to get the hidden / service menu in this model, I have to do another combination in this case... still searching for it :) Thanks anyway.

Really disappointed cause my LG 32 LH70 could only play DviX videos with equal or less than 720 px in width, it means only SD resolution can perform vias USB. Does LG know that it's a waste to play ONLY SD DviX (via USB) on such a full HD TV??????????????????

@quanvantruong you didnt read the manual it as it plays all the files mentioned but with limitations like DTS and file size and the code is for use on the divx website where you can download contend wich gets linked to your tv's code. dont place comments what might discourage people while you dont have a clue as lg tv's simply are best v alue for money and they save you more money ater as at my 42 inch LG5000 only uses 55 watts (intelligent sensor on) wich is less then my 26 inch crt tv .

@TheGoldenCrust it's a funny thing, actually I don't think you are able, to downgrade your TV, maybe if you are a hacker freak, and you can delete everything from your TV, and install a lower version of the firmware. I think if you have already a firmware on your TV you only can upgrade it, but not to downgrade....but you can always read after it in several forum topics, if it is possible...
