In today's video I'll be replacing the battery on an LG G7 ThinQ. I'll show you step by step how to do it, if you feel like taking a whack at it yourself. Given the permanent adhesive that holds the battery in, I don't thinQ LG was really thinkQing about repairs when they cloned Samsung's Galaxy S8. That's right, this is nearly a 1:1 clone of the Samsung Galaxy S8 that was released a year before this phone.
The repair is straight forward, everything is done through the back glass panel and there is little to no risk of damaging the screen. It has all the same size phillips head screws holding it in place, and yes they are even the same size phillips head screws found in the Samsung S8. Battery repairs are an inexpensive way to keep a perfectly fine phone running for years to come. Considering LG hasn't made any drastic improvements to their devices over the last 5 years, aside from the weird LG Wing that was released this year, it might be worth it to fans of the brand to keep using their current device a bit longer.
Thanks for watching, if you have questions or suggestions about devices you'd like to see repaired be sure to leave them in the comments below! If you enjoy this kind of content, and want to see more repairs from me a sub to the channel would be very appreciated. See you next time!

Thanks a ton man! Your video and another covering how to pry the back glass off totally sorted me out. It was great figuring out how to DIY this as my G7 ThinQ's battery was seriously biting the dust lol. I don't mind the loss of water resistance - it's in a pretty decent case anyhow and this is a stopgap 'till it's time for a new device haha. My tactic to get the back glass off and help breaking the adhesive under the battery was to use a razor blade. Be careful though! I didn't have anything sturdy or suitable enough for prying the battery from that dastardly adhesive, but after some finnicking with a razor blade and tiiiiny screwdriver, my saving grace turned out to be the metal handle of some toenail clippers lmao. Greatly appreciated! I hope you've been well.

Awesome! Sometimes improvised tools are the best, in the repair business we kind of live by the "it's not stupid if it works" mentality. And if you watch JerryRigEverything he also uses a razor blade for opening back glasses, it's technically the best way in my opinion. I use straight blades to open iPads and bigger stuff. I'm super glad this video helped you out! That G7 is a pickup truck, it'll keep working as long as you take care of it!

in my experience, LG's design is so innovative that the natural heat and pressure released by my dying battery automatically released the back glass without me even needing to do any extra work, conveniently informing me when it is time to replace the battery and making the process simpler.

I use Tesa double sided tape, its what comes pre-installed on a lot of iPad screens. The brush is for a nail polish bottle filled with 3M Tape Primer, which makes the tape stick even stronger, well worth it to get closer to factory quality repair

Thank you for the informative video! I would like your advice on my situation. My LG G7 ThinQ battery died and the phone obviously powered off. I plugged it in a few hours later and it started to charge with the usual power off charge screen. Within a minute or less of the charge cord being attached I went to power the phone on. When I pushed the button to power it on the screen went black and now I can not charge it or turn it on. I tried both wired and wireless charging. Is it possible the battery is bad and changing it will help? Or, because the phone won't turn on when plugged in with a known good charger, is there something else wrong with it and it's totally bricked? Thank you in advance.
@TapticDigital
@TapticDigital Жыл бұрын
LG is notorious for just going kaput, my old LG G4 unexpectedly bootlooping is kind of what got me into repairs many years ago. It is possible that the phone is just "stuck" in boot up purgatory, and it isn't restarting because it now has a full battery. You can try a soft reboot by holding power and volume down for about ten seconds, if this doesn't get you back to the LG logo, it's most likely a hardware issue. Could be bad battery or battery connector (it can't come loose but the solder can crack) could be bad charging chip, could be something deeper. Try the soft reboot, and if that doesn't work you may want to stop by a local repair shop for some diagnostics. If you're the tinkering type it may be worth grabbing a cheap USB ammeter to read how much amperage your phone is pulling from the charger.

@@TapticDigital Thank you for the fast reply! I tried the soft reboot that you described with the phone plugged in and not plugged in. No change... It's just so weird that it started to charge yesterday and then went black after I pressed the power button to turn it on. I don't have a USB ammeter. But, the phone is stone cold after being plugged in for over an hour.

@@ekp8525 would definitely advise checking for some local shops with decent reviews then unfortunately, with any luck it should be fixable. For board level repairs I'd try for an estimate from STS Telecom, they're also on KZfaq and offer mail-in repairs

You can get replacement pre-cut adhesive for the back panel. There's really no way to ensure that it will be fully water resistant again, it's best to just avoid moisture around electronics.

@@user-tt8fg3dd4c I would definitely try a new battery. LG has had issues in the past related to board components failing, but a battery is the easiest and quickest fix to rule out other problems. If you don't feel like doing it yourself, most places will charge between $60-$100 for the repair.

So the 3m tape primer can it restore it's ip68? Or just the 50% of it? B7000 vs 3m tape primer which is better?
@TapticDigital
@TapticDigital Жыл бұрын
Nothing can restore it without sending it to get certified, which isn't really a consumer thing. The phone would still be water and dust resistant, but not the same as factory. 3M primer helps the double sided adhesive stick, and B7000 is a silicone based adhesive and can create a slightly water resistant seal.

@TapticDigital
@TapticDigital 3 жыл бұрын
The question mark usually appears when no battery is detected. Oddly enough LG is the only manufacturer to even show this warning. There's a chance it isn't fully plugged in, or that the ribbon has been pulled too far out of the battery cell. Make sure everything is fully connected, and the wireless charger is back on as well. Let me know what happens!

@@TapticDigital Thanks for quick comment. I've rechecked again that everything is plugged in and even screwed it completely to make sure it's not a contact issue but to no success. Also tried detaching just wireless charger but without it, power button doesn't react at all. All in all seems like I've been sent a defective battery...

Depending on which Samsung it is, they may have removed some of the heat transfer pads/tape. This would make it run hotter during charge. The shops I’ve worked with always offer a one time replacement if the customer has issues with the first replacement battery. To be honest I’d look at going to a different shop or trying to replace it yourself, it sounds like that shop forgot to put things back in or gave you an old used battery.
