One of the hardest questions for a tech reviewer to answer. If you have a flagship phone, is a one year upgrade worth it? Instead of just ticking off spec check boxes, let's look at what LG is claiming their phone can do. If you have a V30, should you be shopping a V40?

I'm still really enjoying the removable battery of the v20. Sucks that NO modern phone has that ability now.

I moved to the v30 from a Samsung Note 4 and really missed the removable battery. But to give LG credit, they are one of the few mobile manufacturers in the UK that give a 2 year warranty that also covers battery performance. Samsung makes claims of better batteries, but only give a 1 year warranty to UK customers as standard.

I think manufacturers are leaning towards having phones being waterproof as it's the trend now sacrificing the removable battery. It really depends on if you would rather have your phone be waterproof or have a removable battery. Both are great features, shame that we can't have both nowadays.

The V20 is a beast (in a good way). I struggled with decision to "upgrade" my V20 to the V40 due to sacrificing the removable battery. After ~ 5 days with the V40 (pre-ordered) I recommend it without reservation. Screen is much clearer and crisper with a noticeable reduction in the blue overcast and no screen burn / retention issues that plagued the V20. While the V40 objectively has a larger screen it feels much smaller when compared to the V20. This takes getting use to when you upgrade. Any V20 owner will tell you the newer flagships just feel lighter and thinner. This is not a bad thing but when you are accustomed to the V20 as your daily driver any upgrade is going to feel “smaller”. On a side note my wife recently upgraded to iPhone XS Max and that phone actually feels closest to the weight and width of the V20 but would have to switch Android to iOs which I'm not doing ;) Not gonna lie I do miss the convenience of swapping in/out a fully charged battery on my V20 during travel and heavy use.

As a V20 user, I have to say that the battery falling out is my only problem with the phone. If it had a better hinge, then it would be awesome to have a removable battery without worrying it'll fall out when throwing your phone on your bed. I'll happily sacrifice removable battery for water resistance at this point. (I don't use a case because I don't want thickness added to my phone).

Gonna keep shouting it from the rooftops. Why would i "upgrade" from the v20, and lose my replacement 10,000 mah battery and IR blaster. I burn through most of my extended battery every day, and use my IR blaster every day. Reaching for the charger multiple times a day and enabling power saver settings, and being unable to adjust tvs/devices when im out and about, or having to reach for the remote at home, doesnt sound like a great tradeoff for... Waterproofing and some cameras. On top of the fact that i would have to shell out the better part of a grand for the privilege of losing some of my most beloved features. I actually purchased an unopened v20 for a couple hundred bucks about a month back, to serve as my replacement should this phone ever become too old and decrepit. Phones are fast enough now. Android is rich enough in apps and features that you can do just about anything with any device, software wise. To me, software doesnt sell phones, hardware does. With enough time tinkering in settings i can have any android devices running the way i want, so at the end of the day its those mechanical advantages that set a phone apart. I dont care about sexy lines, my phone isnt there to be oggled at by onlookers (buy iphones if thats what you really care about), it needs to get things done. Tiny ass bezels, glass backs, curved screens... All of these "features" that impact performance in no way, are cutting out valuable options that do. Headphone jacks dying off across the brands, i dont even know if a removable battery phone has come along any time recently, and i know the IR blaster has been buried for like 2 years now. Hell even microsd card slots are being taken in a lot of phones, as companies try to say you dont want that, you want thinner! Lighter! Sleeker! Fuck you no i don't. I want a brick. The magical piece of technology that a smartphone is. The device that can solve all of my problems, and doesnt create more problems for me. I dont need a fashion accessory, I need a tool. No phone manufacturers make tools any more.

Thank you for making this video, I love my lgv30 in every way, from taking vids, pics, and performance, a few months ago I happen to drop my phone and even when I have a phone protector 😵😖😞 the way it landed make a top right corner to crack, it bugged me for days so I managed to get a screen protector with a thin black outline that it covers like 90% of the damage area, still love my lgv30! My wife recently got the lgv40 and I like it but I won't play with it do to me wanting to get one lol, so a few days ago I got a notification that I was good for an upgrade soooo😌 that's my excuse to wanting now a lgv40, your vid has me realize that I'm not a phone geek and even when I do use my phone for everything, it feels like if I upgrade it will be only for a super small percentage of improvement, I do take lots of pictures and videos but not to the extent of what you do in the lgv40, you sir have scratched my itch of getting a new phone when in reality my lgv30 can still play with the big dogs after being 2 years old, my 2 👍👍 sir!

Does it look washed out or accurate? I do prefer lcd over oled as long as oled is over saturated. A side from the image retention issues i think g5 has the best lcd blacks I’ve seen on a phone tbh.

Funny, I was starting to sour on LG as my V20 started heating up (badly) for no reason. For weeks I removed apps, reset settings - the only way it would stop was safe mode. Then Oreo came and the thing is running like out-of-the-box. The V40 looks incredibly intriguing, but I compared its price with a replacement battery (remember those?) and I'll ride the V20 for a while longer.

Great video as always. I think that you did a good job of showing people who are not necessarily media Giants and people who do a lot of production on their phone that the LG v40 is still a great option. The only thing I have a problem with is the price and I think that the carriers knew this so that's why I like T-Mobile for example you can get $300 off in a bill credit towards the LG v40. In that case it's a win all around! I like your take on how you review Tech keep up the great work!

Still loving my v30. Thought I wouldn't be in love with nonreplaceable batteries, but this one has held up much better than my v10 which I had to swap 3 batteries per day, unlike the v30 which gets me through my work day, leave it on the charger when I'm doing paperwork then it's back up for the rest of the day. Plus it's nice just slapping it on my nightstand for it to wireless charge. Maybe I'll wait for the v50 and it'll have something to entice me.

Also, Verizon and LG just sent out an upgrade for my V20 to Android 8.0. Just a month after Google upgraded the Pixel 2 to Android 9.0. For me the LG V20 is a keeper for at least one more year. I have owned the V20 since it was officially released.

@docyagamikiko 0-100% charge on your LG V20 battery in under a minute?! I've owned my V20 since 3 months after it was released & unless you can tell me exactly WHAT you use to charge your DRAINED, 0% CHARGED V20 batteries to 100% FULL CAPACITY IN UNDER ONE MINUTE I'm going to point out the obvious TRUTH about you: YOU ARE THE MOST RIDICULOUS STONE-COLD LIAR I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS! You don't even have a CLUE as to how batteries AND direct charging technology WORKS because IF YOU DID you would have had the intellegence to scale your LIE to charging from 20% to 100% in nearly 30 minutes, which would still require you to use a non-OEM charger that would heat-up or possibly over-heat your battery & would absolutely shorten its overall lifetime! Also ALL NON-ROOT V20s whether they're your's, any of mine & my various family members', or anybody else's AUTOMATICALLY SHUTDOWN WHEN & IF THE USER ALLOWS THE BATTERY'S CHARGE TO DROP BELOW 4~5% (occasionally, depending on the current activity, background usage, screen settings, power management settings, etc., the V20 will allow the battery to hit 3% before forcing a shutdown) to PROTECT the battery since, just as charging a battery to its 100% every single time shortens its overall lifetime, draining a battery BELOW 5% CAN PERMINENTLY DAMAGE IT causing it to start draining faster after each recharge, causing it to overheat faster at higher charges, causing it to be incapable of ever actually reaching a "fully" or "near-fully" charged state, or to start to swell after each time you allow it to max. discharge then max. charge it again! But my bottom-line point is that, even when you first received your never-used LG V20 or any other phone or any other battery period, the batteries always contain a bare minimum charge so they are not perminently damaged or destroyed! You are told to charge the batteries before using because if you don't & you drain that little charge they came with YOU may damage or destroy the batteries! So your battery in your V20 never has been at 0%! Maybe at 3~5% which is not smart, but NEVER AT 0% WHILE YOU'VE BEEN USING YOUR PHONE! Unless you rooted your V20 & screwed it to hell & back by disabling root-level settings designed to protect you whole device! To maximize the life of your battery start charging when it drops to 10% or just below - no lower than 8% whenever possible or you're ruining your battery. And, while it seems utterly anti-intuitive NOT to charge a battery to a full 100% EVERY CYCLE, you should ONLY charge to 100% every 10th cycle & charge to 95% MAX. the other 9 times out of 10 to maximize the health & lifespan of your lithium-ion batteries. Different batteries, such as Ni-Cads (Nickel Cadmium), have different recommendations like it being ok to charge them to 100% every 5th charge, but as an Electrical & Mechanical Engineer who has worked as a privately contracted researcher & techicnical advisor for multiple battery, energy, computer, & other tech firms more than half my life, I can say that the best way to keep your batteries charging to their fullest & holding their charge the longest while discharging, & staying as healthly & longest lasting as they possibly can be - barring the rare defect/s or power surge or other unavoidable fault that occationally will occur with any man-made or naturally produced resource - is to try to limit charging any current chemical composition type battery to 100% only once every 10 charges as often as you can & the rest of the time charge to 95%, & if you occasional stop at 90-94% it will actually help even more but don't do that all the time or you battery will potentially become unable to hold a charge greater than that! Also, it will be fine if every few charges you go as high as 96-97% or even 98% as that will further maintain your battery's ability to take & hold a 100% charge on those rare occasions that you feel you'll be needing every last bit of charge your battery can give you before you'll be able to recharge again. But as with short charging, try not to charge so high everytime or you will end up shortening your battery's life &/or performance over time. Since I bought my V20 I've charged to 97-98% every 9 out of 10 times & to 100% on the 10th charge. I'm never without a portable power-bank, currently a Charmast 26800mAh bank with 3USBs: 1 variable chip-controlled QualComm quick-charge 2.0-3.x, 1 QC quick-charge 2.0, & 1 standard charge; with 1 lightning port & 1 bi-directional USB-C port that I can either QC quick-charge 2.0-3.x any device with or use to likewise QC quickie 3.x the power-bank itself. It can charge up to 3 devices at once while using its pass-thru charging to recharge itself through its side, in-charge only micro-USB port. It's thinner than my V20 in its slim-line case & only 3.5mm wider & 7mm taller. I never used to charge my phone over-night but would instead put my power-bank inside itself padded sleeve in my back pocket with my V20 cable plugged into the chip-controlled "hyper-charge" 3.x USB port with the rest in my pocket as well & my V20 in my locking belt holster where if it need an esrly morning charge I could power-bank it while on the go & pumping my tunes through my wired buds when I wanted a more incognito look or through my Avantree Pro+ studio cans also wired whenever possible to get the best possible version of my music thanks to the V20's 32bit Quad DAC! Sadly, my battery is on it's very last legs & once it hits 50% to ~40% my phone decides it is drained & will auto-shutdown! And if I'm multi-tasking with several apps at once it will occasionally shutdown if it drops below 80% IF I forgot to go into the Developer's Settings to do some fine tuning to lessen the active apps & the number of background apps/tasks allowed! So it's time for this T-Mobile customer to JUMP! Upgrade to the newer, better cameras I've been waiting for in the 1st & ONLY phone LG has released that is in anyway an actual improvement on their V20 (because the G7, G7+, V30, & V35 were NOWHERE CLOSE TO THE V20! The V30+ WAS, but that lasted all but a few moments here in the States!), the V40!

For me, the LG V10 was the best phone I ever had. If it wasn't for the boot loop issue and my failing battery I would have kept it. I skipped from a V10 up to a V40 at the end of last year and man do i regret it. I miss the second screen (yes I actually loved it, unlike most), I miss the removable battery, the textured back that kept it from sliding, and (the biggest thing for me) the buttons on the back of the phone. I absolutely hate the buttons being back on the side of the phone. With the V10 I was able to pull it out of my pocket and turn it on without even thinking. I knew which side was the screen and which was the back without looking and could press all the buttons with my pointer finger. Now, I pull it out of my pocket and the screen and back side feel the same, and I find myself constantly pressing the sound or Google assistant button instead of the screen button by accident when I'm not looking. I'm sure it's probably just me, but man do I miss the V10. The only thing about the V40 that has been huge for me is the battery life. I do love how I can charge my phone and be good for 2-3 days if I for reason couldn't charge my phone.

Great video yet again. 2018 hasn't been a great year for smartphone design - or prices! Hopefully next year will bring a better crop that actually warrant these ridiculous prices. I have a V30 but no way could I afford a new V40 or pixel 3 XL. Will probably upgrade next year when the prices come down. There is really no need for anyone to upgrade every year.

I would agree with your assessment that the content creation aspects of the V40 are better than the V30. My biggest gripe is that the telephoto camera is just not that good and you can't use it in manual mode. Triple Shot only makes this more apparent, by showing the pictures sequentially you see how inferior the color and sharpness are on the telephoto camera. The standard and wide angle look great, especially if you adjust the shutter in manual mode. The AR stickers are fun too, but I'm sure the novelty will wear off.

This is definately a nice phone. If I were going to upgrade this year, I would be seriously considering it. But, I'm skipping an upgrade for this year and I'll explain why. If you have a good flagship phone that has come out within the last couple of years, you're kind of chasing your tail if you continue to upgrade just for the camera. If you really like photography, it might be time to go to a DSLR. Both Canon and Nikon have seriously discounted their entry level models. I picked up a Canon Rebel T6 with a kit lense for $549 in Canada. That's less than half of the cost of a new phone. The Nikon D3400 is also about the same price and it's a good entry level model too. I'm sure that you can get either of these for less in the US. If you decide to upgrade the camera later on, any lenses that you buy will work with the new one as long as you stick with the same manufacturer. And, you will be able to sell the body of the old one. You will get good pictures with a smartphone but they will never be able to compete with a DSLR because the lenses and the sensors are so much bigger. It's not for everyone, but if you have mastered your manual settings and want better pictures, it's a consideration. P.S. Get Juan's book too even if you are only going to take pictures with your phone. It's only a couple of bucks. I was so confused over the manual settings for so long I had almost given up. I finally got some clarity after reading it.

I still rock the v20. It's everything I want in a phone and then some. There are scuffs and scratches, a crack in the glass covering the rear cameras, smudges on the screen. But I'll be damned if it's not the best phone I've ever owned. I'm even considering buying another one rather than upgrading. I'd lose a lot of the features I love if I move up in the product line.

As a V30 owner, I can tell you, if there was ever a phone close to perfection, it was that one. I bought it for work and ended up having it as a daily driver because I couldn't have enough. From the cameras and their features to the phone's sleek design and low weight. The only downside, if you could call it like that, it's the selfie camera. When good lighting, it's great, but when it gets darker, it gets waaaay too grainy.
