The TexElec Resound 1.1 not only uses a real Yamaha YMF262 FM synth chip, but it also brings 4 channels of sound to the table. That's right, quadraphonic AdLib sound is now technically possible on your retro PC of choice!

It was amazing to even have music on a computer back in those days. I absolutely loved listening to random MIDI files through my headphones at night with the glow from my Compaq CRT monitor providing the only light source. Songs were hard to come by before the internet. A few BBS's had some of the popular songs and classical pieces, and of course listening to Canyon.mid on repeat. Games were a great way to enjoy the musical experience. That OPL3 is crystal clear and delightful.

I still enjoy MIDI music that's done well. There's a charm to it, in that there's no sound engineering (you know, crazy effects and white noises) to divert your attention. You simply need a good melody, a catchy tune, in order to make MIDI music work, and there's no other way around it.

tarstarkusz - FM synthesis is how the OPL series generates sound. What you're thinking of are sample-based sound cards, which sample real instruments and use those for instrument playback.

What I like the most about MIDI on old cards is they are effectively computer controlled synthesisers and are instruments in their own right.

@ Speedy: To be honest it would be even more interesting to use the OPL3 synthesizer capabilities with a MIDI DAW, like you would with a onboard MIDI wavetable on the soundblaster cards. Because using OPL3 soundfonts is okay but i'd rather use actual synthesis from the hardware.
@SpeedySPCFan
@SpeedySPCFan 6 жыл бұрын
I'd love to do that too, but I think that's a bit beyond the scope of the card since you'd need a whole bunch of additional hardware. I'd prefer to see someone make a modern program that lets you control the OPL3 via MIDI anyways, since that could be used with PCI cards on a modern computer instead of being limited to ISA on a retro rig.
@KRAFTWERK2K6
@KRAFTWERK2K6 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, newer windows versions probably wouldn't even recognize the Onboard synthesizer anyway as a General Midi Synthesizer. I did that a lot with a Soundblaster 16 (PCI version) and some years later with the Wavetable on a 4.1 card and a MIDI DAW and was always hoping a new card with OPL2 or OPL3 synthesis would appear somewhere. Or even USB versions. Or at least something like the Roland Sound Canvas boxes only more affordable. But then again, I'd probably rather use that as a Keyboard version, like some of the Yamaha PSS series.

I LOVE old school Yamaha FM synth chips. One of my hobbies is to give these chips new life by building dedicated video game music players with them. So far I've made players for the Sega Genesis (YM2612, SN76489), Adlib (YM3812), MSX (YM2413, AY-3-8910), and very soon I'l have some new custom boards made for an oldschool YM2151 arcade music player. Keep reviewing tech like this because I can't get enough of that groovy and smooth FM sound.

Having spent quite some time writing OPL music players (I'm one of the current AdPlug maintainers) I've wondered for a long time whether any games enabled the C and D channels on the chip. The OPL2 didn't have any channel on/off commands, and so when you go to OPL3 you (as the programmer) have to turn at least one channel on or you won't get any sound. So any game that supports OPL3 is already enabling at least two channels, perhaps all four depending on how the sound programmer decided to do things. It would be interesting to find out which games did what. It would also be a relatively simple matter to tweak the DOS version of AdPlug so that it can play songs through four channels instead, which might provide more listening opportunities.

Another great video from LGR! And very interesting that this brand new RE-sound card found its way to the channel for old stuff... AdLib was supported in Maniac Mansion 2: Day Of The Tentacle, which I believe Cliff received in one of his large crates a year or two ago. Maybe it would be a good time to review it, - though it's not 4.0.

Back in the mid-90s I actually had an OPL3 soundcard made by Yamaha themselves! It was a great Soundblaster-compatible card, I used it mostly in Windows 95 on my 486 without issue. I later upgraded to a Soundblaster AWE32 and installed some RAM on it so I could listen to 32-channel MOD music (XM, S3M, and IT files mostly) with hardware acceleration, since this music was very CPU-intensive using any regular soundcard. This was back when MP3s weren't very common and pretty much impossible to play without a new Pentium! Oh how times have changed

I had no idea that making brand new ISA cards was even a thing. My first question was who has ISA slots these days, but then after being informed that it's made for the retro scene, well color me impressed. There will be always a special place in my heart for my Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold, that had RCA outputs for sound instead of the standard jack, back in the day and held onto it as long as I could. Knowing there might be, or at least someone is trying to create, a market like this hit me right in the nostalgia.

I've got a batch of those 1uf film caps (mine are white pvc). Among other things they get the resistor inline with the signal in the RC filter pair down to a value in single digits ohms for less signal loss. And they are actually unpolarized so you don't get any leakage from running an electrolytic in reverse half the time or need twice as many to depolarize. Not sure I need them on any of my projects yet, but I've been putting in RC filters on everything that makes audio now. They are approximately the perfect value and size for homebrew use.

Damn that's some nasty leveling. Even if you turn it down at speaker level the wave-form from card to speakers lost it's peaks so it will play distorted square waves. You might want to take a oscilloscope to that card and wire in a few more resistors or replace the current ones with ones of higher value resistance.
@LGR
@LGR 6 жыл бұрын
Correct, and that's really my main complaint here. There are only a handful of games I've found that get that result (one being Xargon) but I'm still hoping it's dampened in a later revision!

Xargon (and many songs that share the same CMF format) were always loud due to the way they set the OPL registers. Not many other games set the global registers the same way. Is it definitely a problem with the card amplifying the signal too much, as opposed to the recording level being set too high during capture? Just wondering whether the card is designed for speaker output rather than line output.

There actually is an option to use a stand-alone OPL3, but it only presents in games that are aware of that standalone OPL3 options. This option is usually called 'Generic OPL3' or 'Windows Sound System' (sometimes Microsoft Sound System). It is present in plenty of games. Earlier games which are not yet aware of standalone OPL3 soundcards sometimes may be tricked by shoving them a different driver, but it has very little sense, as in most cases the soundtracks were written for OPL2 chips and won't use any additional OPL3 capabilities, even if we shove an OPL3 driver instead of OPL2 one.

It’s a dos based multiple CD, fmv adventure FPS games... yes... fmv, adventure, and fps in one! It was made and published by gremlin in the uk not long before they were bought by infogrames.. so I’m guessing it didn’t sell many and didn’t make it to your side of the ocean. I can find very few reviewers talking about it. And the few vids I’ve found online are by people I can’t bare listening to for more than a minute.. Would love to see you try it out, see if it lives up to my memory of it..

A new ISA card?? This is awesome! Are there any manufacturers out there making more parts like this? Say, enough to build a 'new' 486?

Lo-Tech and Serdashop come to mind for making new retro PC parts. But nah, it's not quite possible to build a _completely_ new 486 out of newly-manufactured parts. Yet.

AFAIK some 486 motherboards were produced for industrial applications until mid to late 2000s. Not sure if they still are

Problem is getting a) the CPUs and b) the chipsets for controlling everything. Some generic chips can still be bought new. But most stuff needs to be bought as new old stock and they are getting ever more rare. However people could use FPGAs to emulate those missing chips with high accuracy, but this takes away a bit of the nostalgia and authenticity …

I did start a project to make a "new" 386 or 486 board, based around an original CPU, but with an FPGA for pretty much everything else. But, there were a few things that put me off finishing it - it's obviously not the simplest of projects to begin with, but doable, and there is already a fairly decent 486 core with VGA and OPL2/OPL3 that runs on the "MiSTer" board. Although, it's not currently the fastest 486 atm. It runs at 90 MHz, but is probably closer to an SX 33. lol Wolf3D runs just fine, and it has basic "Sound Blaster" support alongside the OPL core. DOOM - not so great. Maybe 4-5 FPS right now, but there is definitely room for improvement / add-ons, like CPU speed-ups, MPU-401, my own Wavetable core, CD-ROM loading support etc. Might be worth looking again at the "modern" 486 project, but tbh, there wasn't a huge amount of interest on Faceplant.

Arne Schmitz : As long as the design will fit, CPLDs will usually be the better alternative to FPGAs- no setup delay.

It’s cool that retro computer parts are being made. I really hope building new “retro” systems becomes popular. I just bought an older PC case (No I/O port) and the motherboards that fit are really expensive. I just can’t justify paying that much for something that might not work right. I wouldn’t mind slapping an old/new motherboard in it and spending the extra money to be the first owner.

I remember getting surround working on my audigy 2 gold and feeling like a BAWS. Would have been supreme back in the 90s.

Hey Clint! Next time you do an OPL3 Doom test, let me know! I have created a file for Doom that changes the adlib sounds to something much better than the stock patches. It should work out of the box, but you do need to set those DMXOPTION thingies.

Love this type of video! Definitely keen to see more videos on hardware, especially those custom made devices mentioned at the end. Would you pair this with a regular sound blaster (for normal game sound fx) plus an audio mixer?

That's what I was thinking, never hearing this game before. That sounded like some professional arcade-like implementation of FM music. It kind of made every other game here sound amateurish in comparison. : P

Real surround opl3, I've never heard of that before. If that was a thing when I was a kid, I would've been amazed then (as if Soundblaster's wavetable didn't amaze me enough back in the day :p)
