The lone action/adventure Elder Scrolls game that eschews role-playing in favor of... slow controls and clunky combat. Eh. it's not completely awful, but there's a reason it's a forgotten entry in the franchise.

Hah, they actually burnt the pages?! I assume that meant someone had to sit down and do it. I can imagine some one looking to get in the game design industry thinking they'd made it and then being told "Hey intern, have I got the job for YOU!"

While someone sitting and burning edges is a funny idea I’d imagine they’d bulk the pages together and sear the edges in mass that way, tbf something like that shows dedication beyond anything we know today, bound to be that one person who gets cancer from the edge 🙄😂

I remember when this game came out, the few people whose machine managed to match the requirements complained that it was super unstable. Also off the top of my head this is the only retail DOS game that *required* a 3Dfx card I can think of, making it require Win95/98 and an expensive card from a specific manufacturer. Really limited its audience. I'm not sure what kind of returns Bethesda was expecting.

No, Battlespire was still made by Bethesda. If they'd farmed it out to someone else, it would be. If I were to try and label it (and I admit this is a HUGE stretch), I'd say it's more like Skyward Sword: an earnest attempt was made by the parent company, but it ultimately fell flat for various reasons. Now, if you want a CGI analogue, let me walk you over here to Elder Scrolls Online...

Much probably due to XnGine (the first game engine used on DOS games of Elder Scrolls series), and the development delays (the game was meant to launch at mid 1997). Also 3dfx domain on GPU market and Glide API when this game was launched was in the brink to decline (In 1999, 3dfx dwindle to colapse) Still it was weird to a major publisher to launch a highly grade game for MS-DOS at the end of 1998. Also Glide was the only mainstream 3D hardware accelerated API, and only suported on 3dfx hardware. One year after launch, 3dfx was in brink of colapse (delays of new cards, and milking of old API), and DOS support on Windows was become a legacy.

There's actually a story behind those charred maps. One of the lead people at Bethesda were supposedly really unhappy with how clean the maps looked when they arrived from the printer, and decided to go out to the parking lot and burn the edges of all the maps they had received. He was really happy with the results, but some customers disliked it because the inside of the box got all dirty and smelled like a fireplace. Only the earlier batches of Redguard actually have charred edges on its maps. Later ones have clean unburnt maps. Mine is sadly one of those without burnt edges.

If you picked this game up at random as a 12-year-old PC gamer in 1998 like me, believe or not, this was a pretty fantastic game. Yes, it got bad reviews, but as someone who didn't know any better, I spent hours upon hours exploring this fantastic little island. Probably the first fully 3D open world game I ever played that was more than just filler plopped down between points of interest, and that alone was mind blowing.

This is far better than the other games, because you can run through the world yourself and no worries about strength and other settings.obviously LGR doesn’t like Redguard, but you must not compare it with modern techniques. Finally I want that US box too, the Dutch/European version doesn’t have much extras.

Discovered your channel 2 days ago, subscribed today! I love your Tech Tales, and Oddware series. You have carved out an awesome niche for yourself, and I love your content. I decided to skip over here to your newest video to let you know that, I was searching your channel for a techtales, on KimDotCom/Megaupload, but couldn't find it. So I think the Kim-Dot-com / Mega-Upload story would make an excellent Tech-Tales story in the future, please consider making a video on it!

Never saw the appeal in the Gothic series. The RPG elements might be great, but PB sucks at story and world building.

The story and world building of the Gothic series are both *fantastic* - playing the original German version probably also helps, though, I heard that the English translation and voice acting aren't very good.

I haven't played most of the games you review (bit before my time mostly, except things like AOE, which every single person has played on earth) But gosh, I love watching these old games and really enjoy your commentary. Your voice is very pleasant and I love the memery and humor :D I even get slightly nostalgic about things I never played xD

My cousin bought this on a whim one day during the summer of 98 or something. We loved it even though he computer could just about play at point. It blew us away with the types of side quests and stuff that where available. As mad as it sounds actually following clues on a map to a x where treasure was hidden something I'd only dreamed of lol. It the first time I ever heard of a necromancer too. It weren't until many years later that we realised this was an elder Scrolls game.

I got the GOG version and got it to run at 1920x1080. The game looks pretty cool at that size. Also, Reguard has my favorite music in all of the Elder Scrolls.

This game, though flawed, really made me excited for the expansion of the Elder Scrolls universe into other game genres and mediums. It's too bad they lost a lot of their original talent in the aftermath of Battlespire and during the development of Morrowind. I love all the ES games for their own merits, but something definitely shifted when Todd Howard took over, and I feel that a little bit of the heart and spirit of the world was lost. Which makes complete sense if you read about how ES was based on the three original creator's pen and paper RPG campaign, and that they weren't involved in ES III and later games. It became a profitable franchise to be capitalized on rather than a labor of love, sadly.

Now u can play it on your phone (OpenMw Android port) I'm on a S7 and it runs without lag or frame drops. There was only one time it dropped when it was raining in Balmora and I was in a cell with a bunch of NPCs all around. Otherwise been playing the main quest everyday haha. Google it and install the APK if u have a chance. You will need the data files on your phone but that shouldn't be a problem haha. I hope this will make your day when u look it up and see videos.

Lazy Game Reviews project 1999 is a sever where its limited to the first 3 expansions and is free it has the old school eq feel back when you had to take boats to get from continent to continent if you couldn't give a port from a druid or a wizard when you die you lose experience and possibly your level and you have to run through the world naked to get your corpse very hard game but very fulfilling

I got this game used in 01' thinking I would like it, I was wrong. I gave it away, and it came with everything but the pewter figure, and colored comic. Then I found a copy of Might and magic seven at a thrift store, and enjoyed it much, much, much more. I lost the cloth map it came with though... Anyway that was about me but I'm glad to see this game reviewed, as the copy I gave away was the only one I had ever seen!. Kudos man!
