LGV Driver Beginners Guide To Manual Entry on digital tachograph(UK) cerberusk9uk
I have now updated and up loaded a NEWER version (available on cerberusk9uk) that does away with the unnecessary extra minute at the start of the manual entry, because of the feedback I received it made me research my methods, although I have never had any infringements doing it this way it would seem that I was taught /shown a different way to that of many other drivers when switching over to the new digital tachograph system.

A general note:
I have been involved in the 'Dog World' for over 30+ years, having bred Rottweilers and Belgian Malinois and have had my own Specialist Security Dog Services business in the past and although now retired from day to day duties I remain interested through my brother who still is very much involved in the training and assessing both working K9's and their handlers in the UK security world. I have also been involved in logistics and truck driving for 30 years and my hobbies are tropical fish keeping, motorcycles and cars.
I still own a small pack of dogs with their quantity changing as the years roll on.

Hi and Thanks for making this short but very informative video. I am also a Driver of 36 years with unfortunately a gap off the road of nearly 4 years due to my late wife's health situation. I was shunting for a few years shortly before she became ill and hadn't used a Tacho for some time and I have to admit I have found it difficult to grasp this what I now realise is actually very simple when explained properly by yourself! Thanks for taking the time to make this short video Old guys like myself really do Appreciate it. Best Regards Paul

Many thanks for your kind words, for some reason??? They have made the Digital Tachograph seem more complicated than it needs to be at first glance. Taking your time to understand it before you use it would probably the way to go.👍👍👍

As Old driver who has always used analogue tachos, and then had 10 years out I’m now a new driver about to use digi tachos, it’s taken you just under 7 minutes to show us newbies how to insert the tacho card and scroll through, if we have to do the daily walk around the vehicle before shift too as we know we have to show 15 mins in total plus the 7 mins setting the tacho card details that’s 22 mins before even driving it’s so much easier to fill in the analogue paper tacho

Essentially, these manual entries are so you can account for the entire period of time between removing your card near the end of your last day's work, and putting it back in near the start of this day's work. I say near the start because after taking the card out you are still at work unless you are living in the truck. We who are lucky enough to sleep at home every day remove the card and then return keys, paperwork, etc to the office. This period after taking the card out but before we 'Clock Off' is still work in the eyes of the law so you must account for it. Similarly at the start of the day you are at work before you get near the truck so again you must account for that time. This guide is a good one, unlike some others out there!! Thanks Cerberus

First of all, thank you for this video. I am newly qualified LGV driver, and i find the whole overly complex procedure total bolloxs. In this day and age of smart cards and clever electronics,no one should be doing all this button pushing and frustrating procedure. Its a total ridiculous head fuck. However, thankyou for taking the time.

I never do a manual entry as i have to download the card at the end of every shift, When i do Overtime it is recorded on my clocking in chart" (WTD) But there has been many times where i have started late driving the truck so then i would have to make a manual entry, Driving time and Working time Directive runs side by side which gets many drivers mixed up,!!

Thankyou ever so much, I've been out of driving since 2012 so good reminders and tutorials on any changes really give me a calm mind should I have to come back. Got to say though, I don't like the idea of CPC! That's theft and a valuble waste of time especially for Drivers who don't have too much it to spare anyway. It's a real shame the way the trade has changed. Chin up and thankyou again.

+David Johns As I've said previously if it helps then I'm happy, most drivers will give advice if asked. Some manufacturers of tachograph machines use different ways of Inputting your data, it's just a matter of finding out what machine is in the truck you are driving and knowing how to follow the steps to complete the imput of your data on your digi card. Most information can be found on KZfaq.

Nice video mate!just I want to ask if you do a print out did shows the break from 01:00 until 07:00 of the same day?
@cerberusk9uk
@cerberusk9uk 3 жыл бұрын
If you do a print out it will show everything you have done in the past 12/24 hours, this where the manual entry actually helps, so for instance, if you do other work for 15 minutes before you get to your truck, you enter it manually, say you started 0600, then you were sorting paperwork out in the office and talking to the boss, then got to your cab at 0615, when asked to do a manual entry, you input 0600 as your start time not 0615, this will show up on your printout. You do not need to do a printout as a matter of course because all the information is stored on your card for up to 12 months.

Does the at work symbol auto change to the driving symbol when the vehicle is moving? I am only used to the paper tachograph which you turned the knob to steering wheen when you start driving.
@cerberusk9uk
@cerberusk9uk 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it does and when you stop driving it returns to cross hammers symbol, you have to set it for POA (Period of Availability) and break/rest (BED) Symbol manually. Be aware that it also resets the driving time (confusingly) after 30+ minutes if I remember correctly, so you think you have more driving time when in fact you haven't. So make a note of driving time when using POA if you do. Best of luck👍

I assume if you get into your truck at 0600 without doing anything else, then take your card out at say, 1700 without doing else? but that does'nt take care of daily or weekly rest periods, they really still want those times recorded as well. So I would take a guess and say always do a manual entry, anyone know any different?

So at the end it’s ok to just Drive and this changes to Drive automatically? Or do you change to Drive just before moving ? Then when you get to destination does it need changing to other work? Bit of stress for me as I have first job in the morning!
@cerberusk9uk
@cerberusk9uk 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it's automatic, but you do have to change it yourself from say "Cross hammers" to "bed" when having a break and back, once you have had it, also should you use " poa" this has to be manually implemented ie, you press the "mode" button. If you leave it on break, should you drive off it automatically selects "driving " mode. Hope this helps.

So am I correct in thinking you have to do this at the start of every shift as a day driver and the start of every week if you're out tramping for the week, sorry If it's a dumb question I got my multiple choice and hazard tomorrow and cpc case studies next week so I'm just getting into it. Basically are you trying to record your daily rest period for while you was away from the truck? Please advise.
@cerberusk9uk
@cerberusk9uk 6 жыл бұрын
Yes every shift, because you need to show what rest you have had, so when you finish one shift and before your next shift if you do a manual entry you are showing how many hours 'rest' between shifts you have had, this is stored on your digi card and kept as a record.
@HazyIndustries
@HazyIndustries 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry another question, so if you are tramping all week or even just for night etc would you just leave your card in and set it to rest over night, or do you have to take it out and start again in the morning even though you slept in the cab.? Ps passed the multiple choice and hazard p, today. Walk in the park :) class 2 booked and feeling positive, Roll on class 1 ( or even C+E as its called these days)
@bencrosbie
@bencrosbie 5 жыл бұрын
Ive a dumb question. so whats the order when doing a manual? first 1 what did you do after ejecting the card like doing some final part of the job at work? then 2 what did you do after completing that last thing after ejection such as rest? then 3 when have you started work? ( would you put that in other work) then I kinda started getting confused when it asked for the next time after that lol like you just started with other work at 7 what more does it want lol sorry im having a bit of trouble understanding. Ive been driving trucks that still has the clock paper disc tachos never drawn manuals on them before just filled the details in the centre thats it simple enough.
@cerberusk9uk
@cerberusk9uk 5 жыл бұрын
OK it's not such a dumb question as it confuses lots of drivers. Nowadays the authorities want 'every part of your working day to be accounted for' so this includes doing paperwork in the transport office/cab if you are nighting out, talking about your shift with managers etc etc basically anything that you do after clocking on. So, when you get to put your tacho in might be 10-15-20 minutes later but this time needs to be shown somewhere, that's where the manual entry comes in. Example. I start/clock on my shift at 0700,then sort paperwork /route/enquiries in transport office, this takes 10mins, I get to my cab put tacho in... Now I need to account for the 10mins doing work other than driving so my manual entry will start me at 0700 my mode will be bed (to account for the time off from previous shift say 1900)then using the up and down scroll arrows you move the mode to work then forward the time to 0710 in this instance, this shows that from 0700-0710 you have been at work and the tacho is recording the work time from now on, don't forget to show at least 15-20mins for your daily checks before moving off. Don't forget to account for the time at the end of your shift, debrief in office etc, that might be 10 mins after you stop driving so make a note as this time can be shown when you do manual entry on the following shift (weekends /holidays /sick leave etc) Also different tachograph manufacturers have slightly different features so be aware. Hope it clears things up a bit. I have made an updated version of this video that I have tried to simplify to make it more understandable, the link is right at the end of this video, just click on the picture and it will bring you the video. 👍

I need some advice/knowledge, i was driving for a while and i know i messed up my card, i know there are infringements on it, its now been a few years, and i will do my cpc again and get a new card. I want to get back into it, now that i am smarter with these rules and regulations. What will happen when i enter my new card? Would it be overwritten from the lengthy break that i took? When i do enter it, will it ask me was i resting until now? Do i just enter that time has rest? Thanks

I agree with Glen, what was the purpose of booking a 1 minute break which you obviously wasn't on, because you were working making the entry.
@cerberusk9uk
@cerberusk9uk 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not booking a 1minute break, if the exact start time is, let's say, 7 o'clock, when the entry is made, you may have been in the office for 10minutes so when during the manual entry you go back to 7 as being your exact start time you can only scroll back to the nearest minute, so end of my rest period is 7 the next available minute is 0701...not had any infringements and all time from previous working shift is accounted for.
@ivanashley7875
@ivanashley7875 5 жыл бұрын
I understand what your saying, but when you enter your end of rest 0700, the unit will automatically show the current time, then all you have to do is change the mode, (which will be flashing) to work then press enter and then confirm and your good to go.

It's ok...watch the video a few times and keep pausing it and maybe take a few notes as you go. One thing I will say is, there is another kind of tachos out there called Stoneridge or something and that operates a bit different, I believe Scania uses them but others do too, if you get one just ask transport office to show you how to operate it. Good luck for when you start.

Not sure if you can switch it off, if by off you mean completely off. I think they are meant to run all the time so that all and any movements are recorded by the head unit, so they are always recording the time and date 24/7, 356 digitally making records as to when and if the vehicle is being driven. I may of course be totally wrong on this. Anyone able to help?

Silly question time! - why was the card withdrawn at 17.53 if you finished your duties at 18.00? Also, as long as you had 11 hrs break between end of shift and start of new one, is there really a need to correct the tacho? Just confused and not trying to be "smart". Cheers, Mike

Tacho was removed but 'duties' covers other work, like paperwork in the office etc not just driving, VOSA like 'ALL' unaccounted for, hours,recorded, a very simple example is when a driver finishes his driving period but may do other work and his vehicle is used almost immediately by another driver,so although the Tacho was removed by the driver he is still 'AT WORK' also any time away from work like rest periods,weekly rest periods etc should be shown in one way or another and with the introduction of the digi card this can be done when making a manual entry. Thanks for your interest, for more official information I would checkout either VOSA website or any of the government transport sites.

Thanks for your reply. I have not as yet used my driver card (I am a tour coach driver), but although I am keeping up to date with the yearly CPC courses, I have not worked since 2010 due to cancer and severe osteoarthritis. Keeping the courses going in the hope that one day I will return to driving. Best wishes:)

Thanks, and hope all goes well for you. I like the variety of your videos. When I lived in Bugle, Cornwall, I had 3 German Shepherds which I got from a dog rescue home near Biggin Hill, Kent, and also for many years I used to keep freshwater tropical s, mostly Discus which I successfully bred on several occasions!

Thanks, I suppose life isn't just about one thing is it? i used to be heavily involved in security dog training and work, I owned a Security dog training business, but have also been involved with driving professionally for over 25 years and as far as fish keeping, well that's just a hobby that I have been interested in since childhood and funnily enough Discus,when I get enough time will be my next project, my wife loves them.My brother is still involved in the dog training world so videos of his dogs will keep making an appearance on here and I still have 4 of my own that amuse me along with the odd driving item or truck video and my fish (whatever tanks I have set up at the time) I also don't really care if people like them or not, there is enough space on youtube for everyone and if people don't like what I put on, so be it. Once again thanks for your interest and I hope you will subscribe to my channel for further nonsense video clips that tickle my fancy, cerberusk9uk

It's a funny one this, the bigger blue chip companies tend to be really strict on doing a manual entry as part of their systems, smaller companies and some owner drivers don't bother at all, however DVSA like to account for all activities including the time when you are on rest, so by doing a manual entry you can account for any times, driving, other work not using your vehicle ie, office work, other yard duties and of course your rest periods. So to answer your question, your very first manual entry will perhaps start something like this... you start work at 0600 have 5 minutes in the office then get to your vehicle...you start your duty time at 0600 not 0605, then continue as other work ( cross hammers ) whilst doing vehicle checks etc then carry on throughout your shift it automatically records what your doing, then at the end of shift remember to make a note of when you actually clock out, this time will be adjusted when you make your next manual entry, ie, you took your digital card out at 1750 but clocked out at 1800, so the next day you start again at 0600, when doing the manual entry remember to account for the 10 minutes from the shift before, making sure you are using the bed symbol for your rest period overnight, it is complicated to read but keep watching the video and pausing it and rewatch it until you feel confident, if it helps many experienced drivers get it wrong and don't like using manual entries.

The perceived wisdom is, nothing wrong in leaving your driver card in the tacho, provided that no-body else is going to use the vehicle and that the CORRECT mode is being recorded ie, rest, etc and the,'END COUNTRY' has been entered correctly, so if you finish the shift in France enter France as end country , with France then being the start country beginning next shift. The last 3 countries entered are available at the top of the list,( on tacho menu ) if the country you need is not one of them scroll up or down the alphabetic order list. Obviously when working in the UK as main work then its not a problem. If its a siemens tacho it only takes a few moments, Press OK to enter menu system, Press down arrow 3 times to get to Entry Driver 1, Press OK..( Start Country comes up, the last country used is flashing), Press OK, wait a couple of seconds till, Start Country Entered comes up, or press down ,once, End Country Entered comes up, last country used is flashing, Press OK wait a moment until, End Country Entered comes up, then, Press Exit 3 times to return to normal display, hope this helps.

As stated in these comments further down, its to identify ALL, hours, even when on a daily or weekly rest period, by doing a manual entry you add the information from when you END your shift,not just when you take your card out, until you START your next shift period, ie,you might start your shift at 0600, do some paperwork,have a meeting etc,whatever, but not get in your truck until 0620, by doing a manual entry you can back shift your tacho to 0600, ( changing the mode switch to whatever it was you were doing,ie, other work,POA, etc) then moving the time forward to 0620 (changing mode if needed) this takes account of all time from START of shift not just time in truck. This is also the same at the end of SHIFT, you might take your card out at 1645, go to the office, fill in paperwork,talk to manager about following days work,etc,whatever, then clock out,END shift at 1700,so next shift doing a manual entry, you can add on the 15 minutes from end of the last shift.Also it takes into account say,a weekend, finish at 1700 on Friday Start at 0600 on Monday, by doing a manual entry you add the actual times when last END of shift to Start of next shift, (Friday-Monday, 1700-0600) showing all hours when on a rest period. Can start to look a bit complicated when its written down, but break it down bit at a time in small stages and its not as bad as it looks. Its basically so ALL YOUR TIMES ARE RECORDED.

Just turn ignition ON, engine off. As long as the tacho is on, (light on) you can put your Digital card in.

"A 2014 Commission report analysed the implementation of the directive and regulation in 2011-2012. It found certain improvements in the application of the legislation. However the incompleteness and inconsistency of EU countries’ submissions prevented an in-depth analysis of the effect on road safety or on the health and safety of drivers. The Commission noted that it would launch a comprehensive evaluation of the functioning of social legislation in road transport". sites.google.com/site/tachographeu/euro-tachograph-gb
