Liège, Belgium - They told us we would hate it!

Apparently, Liège, Belgium doesn’t have the best reputation among many Europeans. We had been told to not bother with a visit, as people called it “rough,” “dirty,” and many other not-so-nice words. Join us as we explore and take a look for ourselves!

We are Nate and Katrina, two Americans living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and traveling as much as we can to see what there is to see! Call us expats, immigrants, whatever... just call us already.
We balance work life with travel... as best we can! We would love to visit every country in Europe while we live here, and definitely keep a list of our global “must visit” destinations.
We try to give you a true view of us and how we travel and explore the world. Lots of food, definitely some jokes, and probably some swearing…. Hope you enjoy taking these trips with us!

Liege is going through a lot of construction work including the construction of tram lines which makes the city a little messy and a lot shops closed as well due to the lack of accessibility. It's a wonderful city known for its night life but I'd recommend coming by summer 2025.

About the grey ' look' in liège, it is Belgian Bluestone, and most buildings are 200-300 years old and made in that quality product. Don't understand before going up the stairs de Bueren, turn left, as that is the nicest part, a staircase 1 metre wide. that leads to the Liège gardens, and you come across a beer brewery.

Luik/Liège isn't bad at all, just a bit grey. That what hasn't been build in a grey color, turned grey with all the "heavy" industry of the past. I agree it's a bit more of a real city than Amsterdam is. It hasn't been polished as much for tourism.

the place st lambert where the prince bishop lives ? st lambert was a bishop that lived 1000 years ago .. We are not in the middle age haha LOL .. nowadays this building is the justice court of Liège . But Anyway that's a pity you visited very few from Liège because the heart of the city is actually in the upper Liège .. if you go up after the buren stairs then go down from there to the left you can see beautiful picturesque small streets in the Publémont which aren't grey at all and often there is some that have little courtyard and garden, some house dates from the 16 century ... too bad you did not visit this part and also there is not only this cathedral that you saw but another one which was not too far and there is a beautiful garden next to the cathedral .. also you missed the other side of the river ,, outremeuse and the park of the Boverie which has a really beautiful that is also a museum of art . There is also one of the most beautiful bridge of Belgium which was built in the same time as one in Paris ( which kind of look similar ) for the universal exposition in 1905 but it s not downtown it's just before the train station .. this city takes time to visit because there are also many little street with rampart that goes up and it s not so conveniant to walk , many street have stairs also but then it s the charm of the city .. i m from Liege and i find that the center itself place st lambert is not the most picturesque part of the city . it would have been better to take a guide with you because this city does not have really big attractions for tourist .. as you search also on the internet or guide , they don't really show liege as its advantage and they say there are few things to see only like the buren stairs and some museum but there are many more and it s not just a party city as it's also reputed to be just a party place in Belgium among student especially .. also dirty in some areas yes ,because also of many construction work and demolition of historical places that often have disfigured the city over years but pretty if you find the time to explore ... also a pretty cool place to see is the basilica called the sacré coeur and it's more up in the city .. we can see it from the train station .. and it's another part of the city which is also up and you have a nice view from the station .. Next time i hope you come back and visit some others parts of Liège but maybe it will be better from january 2025 after the tramway constructions are over .. ahh and the place you've been for the meatball was good but not the best for people here , there are some places with that are more specialized with boulet liégeois .. Like "café lequet " near the market you've been is among the best and one of the oldest place to eat it

Thanks for the great info. We know it’s impossible to see all of a city in a short time or video. The vlog tends to just be what we were able to get to and this might be interesting on that particular day. Many people here in The Netherlands told us we would not like Liege… they were incorrect. We hope to come back and will definitely take some of your tips!

Ooohhhh now I want a big meatball. I think I know that parking garage. Steep and narrow and old! You think the colorful trainstation is to compensate for all the gray buildings? Must have been expensive though, paid with taxpayers money. It's a shame you didn't get to enjoy some Belgian beers. After a few of those you don't mind all the gray and the dirt. In Belgium they know how to eat and drink. And most of them are also extremely nice people. Keep it up!

I am from Liège and live here - the colouring of the station is temporary (should be taken off within the next few months), and cost 600.000€ (just for the colouring) - however only 10% of the cost to colour the station was paid by the taxpayers money, as 90% of the whole cost was funded by donators :) The man behind this is the french artist Daniel Buren.

You selected a very bad moment to visit Liège, go again in one year, it will be much better. Comment to your visit: The station colours were added later, it is normally transparent / white, and not sure the colours will remain forever, it might be temporary. Place St Lambert building is mainly the Tribunal of the province, that place is normally nice but quite ugly because of the works ongoing. Gauffre waffles are better hot, don't let them become cold. You were very courageous to take the stairs up to the top, i think I never did it. You found the Sunday market, congratulations, you missed the river though, there are ferrys on river going from around the train station down the market where you were, a very nice way of discovering the city and situate some of the museums. The church you show is in the center and somehow surrounded by small street and in particular "The carré" which is famous for bars (a students hot spot) and restaurants at night. Meatballs in Liège indeed very well known in the whole country. There is a place in Liège you need to find (I think it's called Lequet ?) where you wil find very artisanal Liège meatball with Fries.

I love your videos! When I visited Liège a few years ago (after a 2 hour boat ride from Maastricht) the city provided a free map which was so inaccurate that it was funny. Spend a lovely afternoon there. Jacques Brel made a depressing yet beautiful song ‘il neige sur Liège’ (it’s snowing over Liège) that fits the atmosphere (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mqmIbNFpz7DNfZc.htmlsi=s1cotssPPCM7kSHB).

I'm in shock the difference in clean streets vs the Netherlands. But also the big buildings, they could use a facade cleaning. Like the church. About 7-8 years ago it was bit better, (i mean in Bruges i came a lot) but i would not be surprised if there are rats in Liège. Sad, i love ❤ Belgium, it's not taking care of there infrastructure and precious buildings. 😢

From a heritage point of view, Liège is extremely rich, thanks to its almost thousand-year history as a Principality (which, by the way, Dinant was part of). But I respect your opinion.

@@wanneske1969 Yes, these blast furnaces are part of our history, when Liege was one of the places where industry was one of the most flourishing in Europe and fortunately some will be preserved; a museum project is currently being carried out. However, I would like to contradict the fact that you say that Dinant and Namur are more interesting than Liege; of course, these cities are worth visiting. But in no case can we omit the history and heritage importance of Liege. Of which, I remind you, Dinant was a good city in the principauté of Liege. All three cities are interesting to see.

@@wanneske1969 Of course, the abandoned factories in the valley will be largely destroyed to make way for other types of economic activities.
