Otaku culture didn't die with tumblr, it died because of tumblr. The crossbreeding of weird fanbases with the popular ones, exposure of anime to live action people through fanart, horny art, random reblogs etc., alongside with all the problemacy business, tumblr did it all. Migration to twitter didn't help, but tumblr was the original sin.

A lot of cons started with anime clubs at universities, so most attendees were at least somewhat self-conscious and socially functional college students. Also, no one flew out to them, so if you acted like a fool, you would get recognized later. Now we have a lot of weird theater kids who think conventions are their personal stage and spotlight.

This is because half the people at these events only like these things ironically. They're not showing any honest enthusiasm for their hobby because they think it'd be embarrassing to actually show interest in something. The people making asses of themselves in public are just pathetic and desperate for their 15 minutes of fame.

Tumblr was a containment zone that kept parts of the internet safe and it was a great loss. Pray that 4chan never falls or the internet will be doomed from the WMD's levels of autism that will be unleased upon the world...

What killed Anime was the general acceptance of every outsider. Anyone that found it entertaining or wanted to continue to explore the Asian creative space, ended up isolated and desperate.
