Black hats LOL - know who you're referring to. Those travelling pipers had to be 'flash' to earn their keep. Not so the gentlemen pipers like Liam - which suited his quiet, calm personality

Im not irish, I dont listen to irish music really.. from my music teacher at home I've heard of Liam O'Flynn , that's how I started to search his tunes so I could distinguish various ornamentations and so on.. but all I really want to say is , this is really Beautiful !

Just a wee correction to the title above. Eire translates to "load, burden" Éire is the name of the country. That little 'fada' above the E, makes a huge difference in pronunciation and in meaning. But the music, simply the best of the pipers, hands down

Did you make any progress with the pipes over the past 5 years? One of my bigger regrets in life is that I never got to learn music as a child. Still have a deep yearning to learn (I'm in my late 40's now), unfortunately however I'm one of Ireland's worst procrastinators! 😁

All those things Brian. A great inspiration to many including myself. Would never had picked up the pipes were it not for Liam's playing and recordings. Fortunate to hear him live in NZ and Australia several times and to meet him briefly, just the once. Gone too soon alas

With the possible exception of the pedal steel guitar, no musical instrument is more beautiful, haunting, confounding, unforgiving or difficult to play, than the Uilleann (union) pipes. A true master, Liam O'Flynn could make them (and me) laugh and cry. My introduction to traditional Irish music was Planxty, anchored by Liam's incomparably virtuosity. There were lots of other traditional Irish bands (and pipers) to follow, but nobody could match Liam. In the mid-1960s England, one of the more popular graffiti phrases was "Clapton is God." Had the artists turned their ears westward, they might have reached a different conclusion.

It just occurred to me on listening to this again that those have got to be Seamus Ennis's old Coyne pipes Liam is using on this track. Quite a bit sharp of C nat which would correlate. Nice to hear them in a very different setting and still played by a master piper.

karenloconnor I usually listen to the tune over and over while drinking whiskey. Once I'm relaxed and only thinking of the music I just play and the tune sometimes comes fairly quickly. Even if I'm getting it wrong and making mistakes just keep playing it will come.

Listen and use your ears. Though I read the dots, I have picked up many of Liam's tunes without. Once the tunes are going round in my head I know I can play them. Nevertheless I'm sure there's a transcription somewhere. I have written down some of Liam's versions of tunes - easier to pass them on to others
