This and Mrs Doubtfire both very similarly have everything you could ever want from a great film experience. Huge laughs, killer scripts, great performances from the leads, balance of humour and heart, serious subject matter treated with care and timeless charm and whimsy.

This is the only Jim Carrey movie I can watch, but I still have one problem with it. If someone asks a question and you can't lie is sooo different than volunteering information. Every laywer knows you simply answer the question. Nothing more, nothing less. The writing is all about him volunteering info and being honest.

The undertone of Max's wish to have Fletcher be honest - and his wish makes him out-and-out honest. Suppressing a thought and pretending something is when it isn't, is being dishonest. So he has to say what is.

Max's wish is so encompassing that not only can Fletcher not tell a lie, but he cannot stop himself from answering/only partially answering/speaking up without being asked, ask a question where he expects the answer to be a lie, nor change the situation (e.g. beating himself up). Even though the parking tickets weren't directly part of the question, he had to tell the police officer. The fact that he has no way to maneuver out of total truth is central to the plot.
