Nobody ever went to Los Vegas Hotels to listen to classical music, but for decades they paid some very good money to hear this. They heard Mozart, Bach and Beethoven, Gershwin, and yes Chopsticks too. Showmanship, a charming personality, and glitter can accomplish miracles.

No performer has such a grand entrance - never has been, isn't now, & never will again !!!

Never, in his wildest dreams, did Johann Strauss ever imagine his music would have come to this.

Look what he’s wearing. Dude was luxurious as f. Great piano work. He looked like a king walking out there.

Liberace used to do three shows per day in Toronto. He played at the old O'Keefe Centre on Front Street (now the SONY Centre). The concerts usually went on for 10-14 days. Lee could be seen in the days off visiting antique shops looking for something to add to his collection.

There will never be another Liberace....he was wonderful...

Beautiful and inspiring.

Liberace inspired me as a teen! I worked hard to learn to play an interpretation of his "Twelve Street Rag" and "The Beer Barrel Polka". My piano teacher urged me to appear on the Wilkins Amateur Hour in Pittsburgh PA back in the 50s. The problem for me was "stage freight"... I wasn't able to "drum up the nerve". Smile...

Liberace was a revolutionary of classical music. He created his own tempo, patterns on classical hits that common people and sophisticated people recognized and instead a concert was an spectacle were he was the attraction. He knew how to sell him well.

Those first chords that he enters with at 1:01 are so epic. In the orchestra original, they form a quiet, gentle motif, but played with a muscular energy on a piano, the effect is majestic and heroic; although Liberace adds the arpeggios, I think he plays it as written in the famous Shultz-Eveler Arabesques (also the basis of the "Tom and Jerry version"), with dynamics similar Josef Lhevinne's approach. It starts out on a B-flat dominant 7th chord, resolved with repetition on an E-flat chord, the "heroic" harmony heard in the Neethoven Eroica Symphony and Emperor Concerto, so the effect here has a similar majesty and glorious power. Just those few chords almost make me tingle; but with the grandiose costume, and lighting of the fountains, the effect musically and visually is glorious. People may say "tacky" but here he catapults out of it into "glorious," at least for those few moments.

When it was announced that Michael Douglas would play Liberace in Behind The Candlelabra, I didn't think that Michael Douglas looked at all like Liberace. But in the thumbnail for this video, there is something about Liberace--I think it's the eyes--that looks like Michael Douglas--regular Michael Douglas, not Michael Douglas as Liberace. It might have to do with plastic surgery. I've noticed that those procedures give a lot of people a look that is similar to each other. Michael Douglas is good-looking and looks like his late father. Love Liberace's style.
