LIBERATION! VE Day in Europe 1945
Pilsen in the Czech Republic was liberated on the 6th May 1945 by elements of General George Patton’s 3rd Army.
Now each year the Czech people remember these events and put on a huge display of armour and parade through the streets accompanied by flypasts from wartime aircraft.
This year for the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Pilsen I travelled to the city to experience the parade and the range of living history events going on in the city to commemorate the day they were finally freed from tyranny and oppression!
If you are planning to attend the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Pilsen in 2025 I hope this gives you a good idea of what to expect!

Belated thanks, Jon, for an excellent and poignant video. It's heartwarming to see that the residents of Pilsen still remember with honour the American troops who liberated their city. And also good to see the Spitfire from 312 Sqn and your link with Poddington - I imagine that was quite a shock for you to see something close to you so far from its original base. Best! Sue.

Thank you Sue! They really go all out there to remember their liberators and while it’s predominately American they really do cover the range of Allied forces and their passion for it all and how many people turned out to see it was incredible!

Just got around to watching this one. I was amazed by the outpouring of enthusiasm of the liberation 79 years on. The number of American vehicles was mind blowing! It was almost like the liberation was the day you were there. You sure know where to be and when to be there to see these things. Must take a lot of research and planning. Thank you!

Great video Sir. Most Americans are unaware of the ongoing appreciation shown in Europe. Was at D-Day 75th and was amazed at the number of WWII vehicles buzzing around Normandy. Side note….I and some fellow US Army officers bumped into Vaclav Havel (Czech President) in Prague in 1991 at an outdoor cafe.

According to historical information, the Czech Republic was liberated by the American troops of General Patron and the Soviet troops of General Konev. American troops were on the offensive in western Bohemia, and the Soviets, together with the armies of other countries and the rebellious Czechs, stormed Prague. By May 5, 1945, American troops had moved troops to the Karlovy Vary-Pilsen-Budweis line. Another interesting moment of the war is the meeting of the allied forces of the USA and the USSR in Torgau on the Elbe

Hi Jon Great video presentation mate! It’s a fitting tribute to the American forces that the Czech people still celebrate their liberation from the German tyranny that they endured over 79 years ago! The display of vehicles, and the number of re-enactors all help to keep the memories alive. Thanks for sharing your amazing work once again ❤😊
