I think it is an excellent idea. I love mid-wife’s I think they should all be trained in every country if they want to be especially in countries that need so much medical help.

God bless these people, cause it take a special person to do such job. As a male nurse we have access to everything and still people here complain about little stuff and watching this just break my heart.

Those people are trained and they should be allowed to practice freely in order to save lives. Our surveillance system still detecting more cases of maternal and neonatal deaths in Liberia, especially remote communities around the country. Our government need to support them in all direction to have them deployed in those rural areas to save lives. I have communicated with many of them personally and there is need for more to be done.

I just love how industrious Africans in general are. They see problems and they come up with ways to solve them (even if it takes a while or the implementation is not perfect). I wish the African-Americans would do the same thing instead of waiting for government handouts

We are products of our environment. In Africa, we rise up to the occasion by thinking about ways to improvise. We don't wait for "hand out" because there isn't any...

It's a brilliantly practical solution. The procedure while significant isn't surgically or anatomically complicated. Wouldn't work in the first world; consultants would have fits at the idea of giving midwives power. At least she didn't plop all her intestines out as one sees in the US.

Serious these drs lack instrument lincluding sethoscope. This is what war can cause four doctors for 65,000 people. The training of midwives in Ghana in surgical obstetrics would help alot of people in west africa in rural areas.

And who pray tell pays for that? In the developed nations, we have it available at little to no cost to most women. Though the cost of these medications are far far too high for people that don’t even have enough to eat if the medications are even available. In countries such as this, they don’t have availability. Women are often property and considered trade goods in poor countries even today. It’s not as simple as just putting everyone on the pill. Women worldwide die daily almost exclusively as a result of Maternal mortality. This is the worldwide number one killer of women. Next in line is violence. Let that sink in… Pregnancy is not an illness, but in countries where basic nutrition and simple skilled preventative care is absent, it turns deadly very fast. Sick malnourished women have sick malnourished babies. The midwives alliance of North America tenets state “the mother is the first and only primary caregiver for her baby.” This means, healthy mother healthy baby. And they have no way to prevent this if they’re married (or even not). In reality, there aren’t countries full of “loose women” just begging to get pregnant at every turn. As a midwife myself, I know so many of my colleagues that have donated their time, skills, money, and supplies going into the thick of these areas to deliver skilled care where it is so desperately needed. I intend to go for my turn soon as well. These women are people too with equal quality, value, and worth as you… as a midwife, it is my mission to NEVER stop educating the blissfully ignorant public in these well developed countries about the plight of women and babies everywhere. Until not one more dies due to lack of care, it will never be enough!
