Liberty Bell 7 is the capsule used in the United States' second attempt to send a human into space (Mercury-Redstone 4). On July 21, 1961, Gus Grissom successfully became the second American in space. Shortly after landing in the Atlantic, Liberty Bell 7's explosive hatch blew prematurely, allowing water to enter the craft. Grissom exited quickly and floated, waiting to be rescued. Meanwhile, helicopters were unable to retrieve the now water-filled craft. Gus was successfully rescued, but Liberty Bell 7 would be lost at sea for the next thirty-eight years.

You need a longer documentary on this subject, especially showing the capsule as it was cleaned. Thank You 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Huge achievement! I'm sure LB7's recovery made a huge difference to the Grissom family and those people who are affectionately known as "NASA nuts". I am one and have been to the Cape, Houston, Wapakoneta, OH and of course, Mitchell, IN. Would love to see LB7 in the flesh someday. 🥰

It’s too bad Gus Grissom wasn’t around to see the recovered capsule.

Why'd NASA make a big deal about the capsule sinking?

Something that has always bothered me... the flooded capsule would have weighed exactly the same as the empty capsule if it were kept in the water and towed to the carrier for lifting (by a crane). Why did the helicopter try to lift it full of water instead of towing it to the carrier (or wait in place for arrival of dewatering pumps)?

The time required to do that while essentially being in a "hover taxi" would've most likely consumed more fuel than the helo had onboard.

Also, I don't think dewatering was a contingency anyone planned for. The logistics are considerable: a stable enough platform to carry pumps and hoses would have to be on station, ahead of time. Damage control personnel would have to be made available, also ahead of time.

@@Cokie907 perhaps... but I believe the carrier was pretty close (anyone know?), and I'd be surprised if the carrier didn't have a mobile crane of some sort (such as those for lifting planes on deck) that could me positioned at the edge of the deck and attached to the lifting cable from the helicopter before it ran out of fuel. Even if dragging a flooded capsule was slow, the carrier could do 20 knots at least! The capsule probably weighed less than a jet at that time, and the carrier group certainly had dewatering capability that could have emptied the capsule in under a minute! It's the jury-rigged attachment of the crane to the cable that's uncertain (to me). Thr rest seems extremely possible and even likely. If only the pilot had thought to hover and drag with the capsule in the water instead of trying to lift it out of the water... That probably wasn't in the training.
