Librela is becoming more available and widely used globally. With brilliant positive results for patients with OA, come frightening side effects - revealing that patient selection is critical when this drug is recommended and prescribed for our patients.
Join us live as Mike Farrell introduces us to Librela, why it works, and when we should or shouldn't be using it.

24 hours after my dogs first shot he lost control of his back legs, over the next few days he got some feeling back but was also suffering with bowel incontinence. After assurances from my vet that Librela could not possibly be causing these problems we went on to give him 2 further shots. He continued to decline. We are now 100 days since the last shot and is slowly coming back but i don’t think he will ever be the dog he was prior to the devastating first shot. Zoetis are not interested in anything but profits. Do your homework people this is not a miracle drug. There are thousands of us with the same story.

Cytopoint it's a monoclonal antibody drug also and although it was for allergies, it caused the most horrific bacterial skin infection imaginable and made my dog itchy to the point of tearing his hair out. It was an absolute nightmare that is still ongoing a year later! My rescue dog has never been the same. He's had horrific ear infections ever since that we can't get rid of. A black discharge and green pus ooze out of my dog's ears everyday. I spend all my time trying to clean him up and keep him comfortable. They ruined his life and mine is basically dedicated to trying to comfort him.

Thank you for this information. At almost 4 a.m. I am up caring for my beagle who appears to be having adverse reactions after her third shot 10 days ago. I hope people do their research before agreeing to this treatment.

Hello, how is your girl doing? I hope she is better. Do you know what happened? I have a 14 yr old girl and am thinking of starting her on Librela but there is not a whole lot of information available.

@@mizzLopez, sadly she passed just over an hour after I posted. Given the symptoms and fast decline, my vet, and I, believe she suffered ruptured chordae tendonae (tendons that control the heart valves). At the time I assumed I was seeing Librela side effects when in fact it was her heart failing. I do not have confirmation that Librela was responsible. I can say, however, she had a mid-level heart murmur (wasn't taking any heart meds) and arthritis, but no other illnesses or meds. My biggest issue with Librela is the lack of transparency and the manufacturer withholding information that would allow people to make informed decisions. Please also understand this medication is supposed to be used as a last resort when nothing else has worked and quality of life is poor. It is not the cure all some tout it to be. There are some dogs who should never receive it, but you don't hear much about either of these issues. Please read as much as you can, check out Facebook groups, etc., to get a good understanding of what your options are and potential consequences. I wish you and your pup the best.

We are sorry to hear about your experience, and hope that your dog has recovered. As Dr Mike shares in this interview, Librela does have risks and a full neurological work-up should be performed before it is prescribed.

@@Cyn-i5i Thank you for that comment - as Dr Mike explains, there is a screening process that should be incorporated before prescribing librela. Any neurological deficits should immediately exclude a patient 💚 Dr Mike Farrell will go deeper into the subject of Librela use during the Vet Rehab Summit 2024, and you can leard more from him through his KZfaq channel, Vet Lessons

I am very sorry to hear that 💔 At this point, there are many risk factors associated with the use of Librela that don't seem to be taken into consideration with every patient

I think I heard that dogs should not stay on the Nsids while on Librela. My 13 year GS has spondylosis, and has now had two shots of Librela, but has not been taken off Truprofan and Gabapentin…?! Should I stop them?

From what I’ve read, supplements promoting joint health should definitely be continued as this drug only stops pain. Unfortunately, it also inhibits any healing where nerve growth factor is involved. From an article at Pawsatively Fit: Limited testing on the use of of Librela and NSAIDs (Carprofen) for 2 weeks at the same time has been shown to be safe. We don’t know if longer concurrent use would be harmful. In human clinical trials, concurrent dosing of NSAIDS and monoclonal antibodies for more than 4 months did lead to some cases of rapidly progressive osteoarthritis. While rapidly progressing osteoarthritis hasn’t been recognized in the dog, it’s likely important for owners to know it has been seen on the human side.

How many beagles were in the study? And were they caged?

An FDA article dated May 5, 2023 indicates dogs in the test group were owned by individuals, so apparently, in this specific test, the dogs resided with their owners. I can't locate a second article that I read previously indicating there were about 140 beagles tested (going on memory here). I find it very interesting, and disheartening, to have also read in that article that the drug was only tested for three months (three injections) before entering stage 3 trials, that is, direct use in veterinary hands and administration to our pups. People should understand that this drug inhibits pain, but when pain isn't felt, additional injury can occur because pain isn't there to signal a need to stop the activity that would normally cause pain. Also, this drug works by blocking nerve growth factor (NGF). Unfortunately, NGF has lots of other jobs to do in the body (like healing tissue), so pain isn't the only thing impacted.

@@TinaSpencer-mr1cpexactly it was not tested long enough. Unfortunately our dogs are being tested and many are failing these test!
