"Prioritise flow and feel over the individual notes." Nicko, those words are enormously helpful. I sometimes feel I have to play all the correct notes and copy tabs (which are always wrong anyway) but you have given me the ability to say it is more important to get other musical aspects of the solo correct and work within my own interpretation of the solo - so thank you so much.

@LicksOfTheBeast I love how dave plays this solo on the les paul he plays it so fluidly... you should try the les paul version ...from what I understand Dave likes a chunky kneck on a les paul as he tends to go for the classic and traditional les pauls with the uncovered pickups !! Try it !

I like the way he ends the solo best on Live After Death with that staccato descending scale like the one he used to play with his teeth

At 10 years old I knew every note to every Maiden song ever recorded. That hasn't changed. Now I am 56 and I can remember Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner just as well as Killers and just as well as Senjutsu. I do play guitar and I try to find simplified ways of playing my faves. Murray and Smith are NOT for the beginner or even intermediate level musicians. I just play the rhythm (I can't believe I spelled it correctly) parts which is challenging enough.

Dave's lead tone all around is incredible. It's warm and dark. For me personally, if I played all those hammer-ons, pull-offs, and trills, I'd want a brighter, more aggressive, gainy lead tone. It makes the guitar more sensitive to touch and feels easier to play. So Dave's lead tone kind of showcases his actual talent and how powerful his left hand is. I've always wondered. Do people ever call him Dave "Flurry" Murray?
@LicksOfTheBeast
@LicksOfTheBeast 4 ай бұрын
Dave's tone is definitely awesome and so unique, too! Regarding the fast trills and all that: As long as your technique is correct, you actually don't need a lot of gain for trills and legato phrasing in general. In fact, if your trills depend on gain and treble, they're also going to be quite noisy and inconsistent. 😬 I try to keep my gain moderate and my action a bit higher than what the average shredder might prefer so it forces me to play cleanly and correctly. 😊

Dave’s phrasing is so odd I think one of the key ingredients to his signature sound. Unlike a lot of guitarists (inc Adrian) I find many of his phrases dont sound right unless its up to speed which makes it harder to learn
@alm5266
@alm5266 4 ай бұрын
You're 100% correct about Dave's odd phrasings being hard to learn when slowed down. Caught Somewhere In Time and his descending lick in Number of the Beast are two other examples.

Exactly what i was looking for. My hands starts failing after the first solo, how to improve stamina?
@Sebastian_Mroczek
@Sebastian_Mroczek 4 ай бұрын
You could learn to play it using less force. Loosing stamina quickly it's a sign you are pressing with your fingers too hard. You could change your strings for thinner ones as well, for me going from 10s to 9s was a big change in comfort of my playing;)

@@brucedickinson8993 @brucedickinson8993 No problem, glad I could help! If you've been playing for only 7 months, this could actually be quite challenging solo to learn, so give yourself time please. I can also recommend a channel that helped me a lot with HOW TO ACTUALLY PRACTICE things on the guitar. Here's the link to 1 good video, but definitely check them all out! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbJiddGmrNWydqc.htmlsi=LJiSDrizyB6fDxKJ

It's mainly a combination of correct practice, consistency, and time. After only 7 months of playing if you can already get as far as the first solo, you're already far ahead of where I was! 😃

@@LicksOfTheBeast Hahaha I'm still trying to balance college with guitar studies, the love for iron maiden manages to unite. Thank you very much! I will start adopting good study practices. I learn everything on my own, it's a little difficult, but I keep trying! Do you have any tips for mastering those fast hammers on and pull offs in the middle section so it doesn't sound shit?
@thomasanderson9202
@thomasanderson9202 4 ай бұрын
Just in case Nico doesn't answer I will give you my answer. I have played guitar since 1983 and I have been exactly where you have been. The obvious answer is practice but you need specific exercises. Since Dave uses a lot of hammer-ons and pull-offs between the first and third finger that is what you should practice. One example would be using the E-minor pentatonic at the 12-fret. Start on the high E-string. Pick once and play 15-12-15-12 two times with hammer and pull between 15-12. then pick the B-string and do the same. I often don't even pick the B-string these days. I just do a hammer-on from nowhere. Anyway just continue the same pattern but use 12-14 for G,D, and A string. 15-12-15-12 for low E. Once you reach the low E you can then go up again by playing 12-15-12-15-12-15-12-15 then move on to the A-string pick once and the rest hammer and pull like this 12-14-12-14-12-14-12-14 etc... If you do this every day 10 min you will improve. Also play against a metronome and see what tempo you can play before it gets really hard.

There is a lot of great stuff on you tube. A guy named Jamie Robinson have something that might interest you. Search for 10 MINUTE LEGATO WORKOUT! (w/ Tabs + Bonus Lick!) I would also recommend to use a software that can slow down the speed of a solo. Then use that program to isolate the part you have problems with and slow it down to a speed you can master. You will get faster.

@@thomasanderson9202 thank you very much, I love Dave's style of playing so i will definitely practise it. Btw I dind't expect such a sophisticated answet tbh,
@LicksOfTheBeast
@LicksOfTheBeast 4 ай бұрын
Only other thing I can add for now is practice hammer-ons and pull-offs without too much gain and be midful of when you're hammering on and when you're pulling off. Don't just wildly go back and forth between the two fingers. Legato can get a lot more complex but I think Mr Anderson covered plenty for you to have enough to work on for a little bit 😊
