VIDEO INFO: Villains is the seventh studio album by Queens of the Stone Age. Released on August 25 2017, the album sees the band reinventing their sound once again. Many fans and critics alike describe the album as a bit more laid back. Kory Grow, journalist for Rolling Stone magazine described it as “a little looser and more uptempo…” compared to the previous album Like Clockwork… The band released two singles from the album, The Way You Used To Do and The Evil Has Landed. The two singles were quite a contrast to each other. One was a 50s dance and swing inspired song, while the other was a more traditionally sounding Queens track that had already existed for 14 years before the release. Now since it’s almost two years since the album’s release, i thought it would be a great idea to look back at the history, lyrics and sound of this album.

i know im a bit late on this comment lol, but i think it's one of my favorite queens songs ever and i always find myself coming back to it when i'm in a somber and depressed mood because it's really relatable. especially the whole "theres no magic bullet" verse. amazing song

Even later on this, but, Villains of circumstance touches my soul. I tend to listen to it imagining it's my funeral song, as the track builds after the lyrics have stopped, I'm cremated. Then my guests leave during the outro. It's beautiful. And, I'm oversharing again.

Not gonna lie Era vulgaris was the first album I heard from QOTSA. I heard 3s and 7s and Sick Sick Sick a couple years before I looked up go with the flow which was my favorite song from Rock Band. That's when I became a fan. I put them down around when I started junior high and left them there until I started my own band and began looking for influences. I found their debut last summer and became obsessed. Homme is easily my biggest influence, even though he kind of seems like a douchebag. I still wanna party with him someday though so I can ask him how come he didn't put 'rickshaw' on Rated R and why he put 'Hispanic Impressions' on the debut instead of Infinity or Born to Hula

Well I loved it from the beginning (but not as much as Like Clockwork) but it still grows on me too, which is the most Qotsa thing ever - they always force you to look wider on music. I feel like Josh's intention is to separate fanbase from guys that stick too much to some music genres. The line "I don't like it, cause Nick's not on it" from one of Villains promotion videos is quite real, there are so many people stuck in that era, or even guys that downrate everything since Kyuss. The thing I find interesting is how many songs on this album are, i don't know how to call it, hiding its' true nature? The Way You Used To Do at first sounds too normal/mainstream for a Qotsa song but as you discover 30s swing in it, you realise, how good and clever it is. Feet Don't Fail Me - of course the intro, The Evil Has Landed main riff wants us to believe it's faster than it really is, head Like A Haunted House is ... weird.... in a good way. Honestly only Fortress is the song I don't love that much, mostly cause of lyrics - i just don't feel it (obviously it wasn't written for me to feel it). Anyway, it's been two years and Josh is suspiciously silent right now... just how he was before Post Pop Depression... and before Villains...

Like Clockwork had a lot of production as well. For me personally, it's too much production and I don't like that, but it's a trend now in mainstream rock and I think they wanted to reach that audience as well. I hope that know they tried that and reached they'll try something different, 'cause I personally hate the trend in mainstream rock which is "overproduction (mostly to cover the bland music), minimal use of guitar, very catchy/pop/melodic". They are not bad albums at all though.

Villains could some day grow on me. Anyway, great video. If you haven't checked out Failure's Fantastic Planet yet, I strongly recommend it. A hidden space-grunge gem of the 90s that's only recently getting the respect it deserves. One of its songs has been selected for the playlist for NASA's next trip to the moon. Regular John is so in your face though. I feel like it's such a great intro to the band even though 'How to handle a rope' feels like the perfect album opener. Critics and some fans know nothing, if you begin by comparing an album that it's all about reinventing the band's sound to the previous one is because you think that the group is just filling some space in the music industry and they can't do something outside their area. It's like "Oh! rated R, SFTD, Like a clockwork were so good, every album of these dudes should be just like that! and obviously that's a big no. Villains, yes, it can be more "laid back", "uptempo" or whatever but just because you expected it to sound as your way doesn't make it bad, musically and overall the album is a masterpiece, if it would have came from another band everyone would be sucking it's package.

The sound of Mark Ronson, spoiled the whole album, I notice that the live version of the songs they work, but really Mark ruined the whole record for me

Carlos Javier Tiznado I see this comments often under Villains videos, but they are by people that show to know nothing about mixing. If you ask people that work in that field for real they'll tell you that it isn't badly mixed at all :) I wonder if fans keep saying it like parrots because a stupid youtuber said that.
@probotdrummer
@probotdrummer 5 жыл бұрын
@@nickn2794 there is not a bad mix as they say, that is why I do say sound, kind like his sound signature, if you go thru their catalog I won't dare to say like for example Eric Valentine is better that Joe Barresi both have different sound signatures and the albums in question are very different is just that Mark Ronson sound choices did not make sense for me at all, which is personal taste, there is cases like for example in Relationship of Command from At The Drive In that I did love what Andy Wallace did in the Mixing but Omar hated it, so bottom line is either you listen to it and enjoy it or just disregard it and skip the album or pick the songs that you kind of enjoy which in case of Villans, for me I don't even listen to them at all, just the live version. As far as being a repetitive theme that they talk about the mix or Mark well everyone have their own opinion but with QOTSA they have a diverse catalogue and sound signatures in every album. I do enjoy them all except Villans so in my conclusion it points out to Mark, because I don't enjoy his choices and sound signature in the rest of his work, so thank you Mark, for making me skip Villans all together.

Carlos Javier Tiznado ok I understand now, but I think that was exactly what Homme wanted to do, exactly how he wanted the record to sound. I'm not a big fan of Villains either but I wouldn't say it's a bad album, just less special than other things they've done. I hope they'll skip overproduction for the next records, and I hope Homme returns to produce himself.

Lmfao the album doesn't have a strong concept and the songwriting is subpar. To say that the album would be as good as their best records if Ronson didn't produce it is just stupid as fuck.

Servando Flores how do you know it's bad mixed then? "Because you feel it"? C'mon. I bet a dumb youtuber said that and now you're all repeating that. If you ask people that actually know something about it they'll tell you it's not badly mixed, so you're probably wrong don't you think? I also bet that Josh since he's producer himself knows much better than us when something is well mixed or not, and he would never release something badly mixed.

Tone / Timbre and mixing are very different things, not many people seem to know that. The mixing on this record is great and more transparent than ever (imho). The tone and production style took some while for me personnaly to get into but by now I love the record. Definitely a grower.
