Info: Serj Tankian is an Armenian-American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, poet, painter, entrepreneur… let’s just say he’s done a lot of things throughout his life. But if there are a couple of things that he cares about more than anything else, it’s gotta be art and politics. He’s always been the type of person who wants to expose the truth and create a better world. And his most powerful medium for doing that has always been music. Most people know him from being the vocalist of SOAD, but he’s also been a part of a ton of other art projects through the years. Let's take a closer look.

I had the great luck of meeting Serj when I was working as a security guard at the airport of Fiumicino, Rome; he was so kind to me, he stopped from going where he had to and we had a little chat for a couple minutes, then he also signed an autograph for me with a dedication. Needless to say, I keep that piece of paper like a treasure!

Damn I was seriously crying when his grandpa was talking about the genocide. I hung out a lot with this girl named Tyla for a year or two, her dad is Armenian. She loves SOAD and has seen them In concert multiple times. She told me all about the genocide, i had no idea. The only people that really even know about it are Armenians, the government refuses to talk about it. But yeah, he's very important to Armenian Americans. And the rest of us.

A friend of mine was lucky enough to have a conversation with him in Armenia! Ive always been drawn to serj too. Even as a kid i always knew him specifically in system of a down was a forced to be reckoned with. I just wasnt sure why. Recently got back into exploring serj’s art work as a solo artist and with a new open adult mind to really learn about the heavy activism in issues that are still flowing into todays time. So refreshing for an artist to make appealing music while still basing it on real issues and awareness.

Recently it cost me my job because I too believe in speaking out rather than allowing myself to be silenced in order to appease others and be another "yes" person. That’s a simple answer. The Serj today compared to the Serj from yesterday, is a bitch. He doesn’t have the vocal prowess anymore to make heavy music. Every concert I have seen of the current stint has been shit. His voice is trash, he can’t growl anymore. They want heavy (his band) he wants pussy music. This is why the drummer from Korn left. Jonathan Davis wanted all this gay experimental bullshit and David got sick of it. He was making music that seemed more like a sellout and less like music that fit the band. You can only evolve so much before you manage to alienate your bandmates.

he was the first person to really open my eyes to the injustices around the world, namely the armenian genocide. when finally had the first mention of it in school, most of the information was inaccurate and i corrected my teacher alongside my armenian colleagues (my elementary and high school had prominent armenian populations). he really helped me be confident in pursuing art and not giving a shit about the money other people are so obsessed with artists making. him and vahe berberian helped me with that a lot (if you've seen the original music video for sky is over, you've seen vahe berberian the painter) and i met vahe as well at an event serj was having with atom egoyan (an excellent armenian filmmaker). idk, overall he was a really influential figure in my life and has inspired me to take his teachings with me to university and make change there :)

Serj did all of this, he is awesome, and if he is not feeling SOAD anymore, if his voice isn't heavy anymore, can't we just accept all the music they provided? and btw, everyone saying daron should make a SOAD album without serj, he is, Scars On Broadway is SOAD without serj, but they don't wanna ride the name already amde, they wanna start from the bottom, so go listen to that, and stop saying serj have a big ego, he just don't want to do SOAD anymore. if they were to make a half-assed album everyone would just shit on that, so i prefer to listen to daron's music, and reminisce the fucking 8 albums serj and SOAD gave us

I really agree on that first statement! Too many people are angry about the new record not coming out. I think they expect too much. It's way better to keep the great streak of records they already have and not put out something that they (and most likely other people) feel is mediocre. Thanks for putting yourself in the shoes of the musicians Isaac

Yeah totally agree with you, a half assed SOAD album would be pointless and everyone who wanted a new album would be quick to judge it as a bad album. Still as a fan there's still a part of me that hopes they do find the inspiration to make another but if not, then so be it.

@OpreRoma

@DoubleJ not really. That's more of a centrist thing. And the right wingers in government still censor opposition. Experts who work in government posts who find information that undermines government policy get fired. Students get suspended for taking part in perfectly legal political activity on campuses (e.g. students disciplined at UoManchester for pro Palestine activism, students at UoReading suspended for action in solidarity with striking lecturers). Left wing activists, even pacifist groups, continue to be put under often illegal police surveillance. If you're looking at the left for censorship, you're looking in the wrong place. Look at your governments. They actually have the power to censor people
@OpreRoma
@OpreRoma 4 жыл бұрын
@DoubleJ actually, just this past year we've had tons of cases of conservative censorship just in the UK alone. A punk band called Killdren were the target of a massive outpouring of hate for their song "Kill Tory Scum" and were banned from Glastonbury (they showed up anyway and played an impromptu gig which got more people attending than their original show would have, gotra love the Streisand Effect) Munroe Bergdorf, a transgender woman, and left wing campaigner, has been fired from 2 high profile jobs thanks to pressure and smear campaigns from transphobic and conservative groups. In fact, any prominent transgender person is the constant target of death threats, attacks, and censorship, while transphobes get full page spreads in national newspapers where they claim they are being "censored" These are just things i know off the top of my head from the UK in recent months, fuck knows how bad this would get if i actually bothered to google stuff
@OpreRoma
@OpreRoma 4 жыл бұрын
@DoubleJ ...if you think Trump isn't fuelling censorship when he literally bans journalists he doesn't like from press conferences then I don't know where to start... also the US left isn't even fucking left wing lol. It's centrist by international standards *at best*. Don't put neoliberals misunderstanding social justice concepts on us Also aren't we literally having this discussion in the comments of a video that mentions an openly left wing musician having his songs banned from radio by conservative and neoliberal stations after 9/11? All I have to say is look at who owns your media organisations. They're not left wing. They're a mix of centrists and right wingers. They have the power to censor. Also cancelling isn't a violation of free speech. Free speechbis protection from the powerful censoring your work. It is not a protection from response or consequences. How is hate speech, an act that is designed by it's nature to shut down it's targets, classed as free speech in your quaint little mindbox but people saying "I think this is hatespeech" isn't? And i think with your use of IQ (which only measures your ability to complete an IQ test and nothing else), your complete strawmanning of "the left" by associating it with centrist tropes which themselves aren't universal among centrists, and you calling anyone who dares care about racism or homophobia as an "SJW", I think you've just completed my "Dumb White Boy in KZfaq Comments" bingo card. I'll be claiming my prize, which is a nice relieving cinder block to the head so that I can forget you even exist

At 1:45 that isnt John Dolmayan. It's Ontronik "Andy" Khatchurian, SOAD's first drummer who recorded the first 2 demos with SOAD befire having a hand injury and leaving the band, which is when John joined. He has zero song writing credits. The only song he has some credits for is an awesome song called Honey, but coincidentally it never made it to album. Also, his feel and rhythm on the drums is something left to be desired even till today. Listen to the demos carefully and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. And the band he created afterwards was called Apex Theory. Bassist was the same bassist as the guy in “soil”.
